Title: how to tighten rear axle bolt?
Post by: chaz35 on December 23, 2014, 07:56:02 PM
I removed rear wheel and was surprised fairly awkward to secure the wheel to loosen the axle nut.  I checked the service manual for the torque value and it should be approx 84 to 90 ft #'s.  I used the rear brakes to get it off.  Now I am wondering how to hold the wheel to torque it back on?

When I transport the scooter in my trailer, I strap the wheels to the trailer floor.  So, I guess I will hold the wheel by strapping it to a long board.  I am wondering if there is some trick to lock the rear wheel.  I looked in the service manual for suggestions, but didn't see any.  I really don't want to use the rear brakes again, 90 ft #'s is a lot of torque to put through the brakes IMO.

Any comments welcomed.  Cheers

The best thing is to use an impact wrench. Otherwise jam a large prybar or tube of some sort in the rear wheel and use the engine case and swingarm to hold that in place while a friend holds tight on the rear brakes.

Thanks for reply.  Actually, my method worked, maybe too well.  Rear axle nut feels like it's over torqued, I am afraid I may have broken something.  Is the torque value really 80 - 94 ft lbs?  Nut and axle looks like it should be able to take 90 ft lbs, but it doesn't seem to be tightening up.  Need some reassurance before continuing.  Help!

All is well, maybe.  The nut stripped out, the shaft is OK, but a little banged up from the nut locking mechanism.  I didn't have a die to chase it, but will get one for next time.  I had the proper nut, luckily same as flywheel nut on one of my kart engines.  I torqued it on to a little over 80 ft #'s and stopped there, felt good.  Cheers

I've put them on with nothing more than a crescent wrench, so your 80lbs. will be more than enough.

It should be a NyLok type nut on there anyway. That will keep it from backing off

That's no good if it stripped, way too tight. And Zombie they don't have nylock they have little locking tabs instead.

I have NyLok collar nuts on both bikes. I actually don' recall seeing anything different on any other bike.

I never have worked on a People tho... (bike that is) ;)

I think nyloc nut is a good idea.  The little metal locking tabs on the nut are probably what messed mine up.  90 ft #'s seems excessive, just trying to follow the service manual, my bad.  I have destroyed a fair amount of machinery wrenching on it over the years, so when something like this happens it stresses me out.  Thanks for replies.  Cheers

It could have been already stripped, i use my 3/4" ingrasolrand impact (high torque) on full power on axle nuts and have NEVER stripped one. Give it a good 5-6 second blast and it's good. And zombie, can't remember the last time I worked on a zedx but most if not all the 150+cc bikes have the metal tab style. Technically a nylock is one time use, "technically" lol. I'll have to have a look at the manual, 90ft-lbs sound high but might be right. Was that spec in the kymco book?

Here, I found this on WIKI. I looked it up for two reasons.
1) I used to overhaul Air Craft engines, and the re-use of Nylok is permitted (they are drilled, and wired)
2) Captive nuts were NOT allowed to be re-used (even when wired)

"Reuse safety[edit]
Authorities disagree on whether nyloc nuts should be reused. For example, Carroll Smith (Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing Handbook) notes that the nylon insert is not damaged by installation and therefore they can be reused many times,[1] and a Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular allows nuts to be reused if the prevailing torque is within specification.[3] However, an Air Force Technical Order requires replacement of self-locking nuts in critical areas.[4] Various specifications for aerospace-grade self-locking nuts require that the running torque be maintained after a number of cycles of assembly, but without preloading the fastener.[5]

Re-use of captive nuts is listed in the FAA worksheets but I couldn't find it. Here's a Pict instead...
Kymco uses a version of Captive nut on the Var, and clutch.
You can replace them w/ Nyloks, and washers or use Lok tite on them after the first use.

The axel I never paid any attention too. It's big enough to get tight enough to stay, plus the spline shaft negates any torsional load.

I realize none of this is really important. It just got my goat so I had to post it up

Service manual says 11 to 13 kg-m which I converted to 80 to 94 ft lbs.  I used web and came up with same answer several times.  Thinking about it, I have stripped out plenty of flywheel nuts.  If you don't torque them on usually 75 ft lbs or more, the flywheel will come loose.  If you torque it to spec, you will strip the nut after a few installs.  Maybe axle is designed/ manufactured to be harder than nut, so you strip the nut and not the axle?

I can tell my scooter has been worked on, so maybe was already stripped.  It was pretty tough to break loose, had to stand on the cheater bar to break it loose lol's.

I ordered 16mm x 1.5 die to clean the axle threads next time.  I plan to get some new tires soon, so will have to pull rear wheel again.

Happy Holidays!  Cheers

I will probably use some blue loctite next time.  The nut I used has no locking features.

Nice, that's new to me. They taught the myth of one time use at automotive school. I trust plane engineers, i mean you wouldn't voluntarily reuse unless you knew they were sold on a plane haha. And i want saying i don't reuse nylock sometimes, but i won't worry about it from now on.

Never worry period! It changes nothing.
