Several guys at work drive Harley Davidson's and when I told them I was interested in a scooter, they had no idea what to think. I little jab here and there and then I played along and told them I'd put a sticker on it "Baby Harley". Then I thought better. Really though they've been pretty supportive that there is just another rider out there. Took at little ribbing today with the pic below. Believe me I hand out shovels full at times so getting it back is just part of having fun at work. I thought it was funny and it just shows the American perspective on scooters (of course not by everyone, we know that). Don't take it too serious cause the guy who sent it to me has offered to come over and ride with me and my Super 8 150 and him on his HD anytime I want.

Occasionally, but who cares! ;D I'm my on person I like scooters and I don't let others ruin it for me. Usually people are just kidding anyway and I have gotten compliments about mine before to so it all evens out I guess lol.

Yeah, I get it all the time. My answer depends on who's asking..
My standard reply is "I'm only out to impress one person.. The guy holding the handlebars."
And for the Lifestyle Riders, the answer varies, depending on the situation, but usually they won't understand, so it's not worth the effort.

All the "why don't you get a real motorcycle" comments i've ever received have come from people in cages. I usually respond with a "where's yours?", always catches them off guard. I always find it funny that they can question my ball size while they are behind 45 airbags and 10 feet of steel.

I really don't give a crap what anyone thinks of us. For me its about the joy of riding. I have two friends of mine who ride. They both have motorcycles and scooters. Both have told me that scooters are more fun to ride. One of my friends told me this story of this marine who wanted to race him on his little Honda SilverWing 600cc bike. Well guess what, my friend not only beat him, but smoked his ass too. This marine was so embarrassed in front of his friends. I know a few people in the other scooter club here in Vegas who ride. Their grown men, but they love riding their Vespas bikes. Does this make them any less of a man? No it does not. Us scooterists are just as much men as these motorcycle guys are. BTW thanks for a good laugh. This proves these guys have really big egos, but really tiny penises.

I was one of those "Macho Men" who had owned a 150cdc scooter for a couple years and wanted to upgrade to a Cruiser. I did.. I bought a Suzuki Boulevard 800cc and I DID NOT like it. I hated the fact that I didn't have storage and I wasent about to spend 300-400 on nice leather saddle bags.
PLUS...
I DONT like driving my bikes on the hwy. I love driving them around town, so I had to shift a lot more on my boulevard and just decided to sell it and I broke even, Then I bought me a 250cc and I like it a lot. I have more storage and I don't have to shift. Im 6'4'' and It became exhausting.

When you have a Harley rider give you crap about your scooter just remember, insecurity rides the biggest, loudest bike they can find, Confidence rides whatever he wants to. If you need more proof, watch how many Harley riders ride with no helmet. Then notice that scooter rides almost always have helmets on. Could this be false bravado? Can't look cool wearing a helmet.......right?
Every since I bought my scoot I have had people come up to me and ask about it. Or they will roll up next to me in an intersection and ask what the gas mileage is or what the brand is. I have had people take pictures of it sitting in a parking lot while I'm inside having breakfast. I have also had fathers ask if they can take a picture with there children sitting on it.
I have had my scoot parked next to several Harley's and while I'm taking off my helmet, several people walked up and started complimenting me on it and didn't even notice the full dress Harley's sitting right there.
I love my little scoot and have no problem riding it. And I don't care what other people think. Follow your passions and life will be so much better.

I have had friends and family ask "why are you riding a girls bike?" I had a young
couple in a pick up truck point and snicker at me at a red light.
On the same day, I had a Harley/Goldwing type touring bike guy not only wave, but gave me a thumbs up. HE GOT IT!! I am having a blast on my little blue and white plastic scooter. Nothing else matters.

When I rode my scoot home for the first time several years ago my two youngest boy's were waiting in the driveway and their first words were "Dad you look gay on that thing".....but after I did a demo drive up and down the street..... their second words were "when do we get to ride it!"

Yeah, I feel bad too just knowing that the ONLY reason I rode those high horsepower and torque cruisers, like my past VTX 1800, Suzuki 1500 Drifter, my dyno winning, 96 inch Harley and the last one, a Suzuki CR1800, with their performance exhaust, was that I was just insecure and had no idea, I could have saved a lot of money by just getting in touch with my feminine side, by eating chocolate kisses and watching Hallmark movies on Netflix, and just keeping my first little 50cc Zuma Scooter! Oh the humanity.
Maybe the reason some of you feel bad being the subject of stereotyping is because you do the same thing in your omnipotence. Karma can be a Beeeach.

BMW is the bike for physicians, lawyers and directors. Both groups don't care about scooterists.
But I get remarks for riding a Kymco scooter from Vespisti, Lambrettisti & Co.

I've gotten a few friendly ribbings about the scooter.
Mostly because my dart league team plays out of a biker bar. But the majority of them are friends, so it's just harmless fun.
I do get amused when a guy on a motorcycle waves going by, and then pulls his hand back real fast when he realizes it's a scooter. :)

Very biased and naïve comment.
The way you said the above it seems you think that ALL Harley riders engage in this behavior. It's a shame that you post this without saying: "In my opinion etc."
Only the 1% motorcycle club's (H angels, Vagos etc) are doing this stuff.
It's like saying all Kymco riders eat Sushi, blowfish and Kimchee:)

Sorta but not much. Everyone else makes a bad choice in bikes, clothes, lifestyle etc but the ego makes us view ourselves under a different microscope. It's an "I'm okay you're not" kind of idea.
Jump ship and get a different kind of ride and all of a sudden you become the thing you loathed not long ago.
Bikes/ scooter's are just machines but the rider's are as different as those machines but we don't tolerate each other very well, do we? Judge not lest ye be judged is applicable.
The comment about the HD riders not wearing helmets (A very small percentage) is not accurate because it implied it was everyone.
The comment that scooter riders all wear helmets (Some do and some don't) is totally inaccurate in the town where I live because the little 49cc scooters don't require being registered, a motorcycle license, insurance (?) safety inspections nor a helmet etc.
ALMOST all of the scooter rider's I see from my storefront window, right in the busy part of town, wear no helmet's and their passenger's don't either. When it's warm, a lot wear flip-flops, short pants and t-shirt's.
I just don't like naïve generalizations about any one or any thing as all it shows is prejudice and lack of real experience in a real world, from biased individual's.

The vast majority think that all scooters are the 49cc limited-to-35mph kind (a generalization born of stereotyping), and a vast majority are surprised when I tell them that I can top out at 62 mph and get 75-80 mpg. That changes their perspective in a hurry. Then they get really interested, and that's when I really tout the virtues of the scooter lifestyle and do the sell job. Think of it as "scooter evangelism"! :D

That is how it is here in Vegas. The public has this image that all scooters are slow. When I driving in my cage, I see many scooter riders on their 49ccs with two passengers. Of course the majority are people riding the cheap Chinese bikes. Those small bikes are not designed to hold two people. Because of this the cagers think we are slow. This makes the rest of us who ride scooters look bad. Even in my classes, I tell everyone I ride a scooter. They think I must have one of the slow bikes. When I tell them I ride a 125cc bike that can easily do 55mph with no problems, they are blown away. They do not understand just how much fun scooters are to ride.

I got a little ribbing in the Motorcycle Safety class, and everyone busted up at the instructor riding the little 125cc scooter around the course after our evaluation. Guess that pretty much indicates their attitude.
I would prefer if scooter riding had a more manly reputation (maybe because I'm also a male quilter!). My wife thinks it's hot, likes me in my gear. Can't complain about that ;). I got a scooter because it's automatic.
I have a friend who had a Honda Goldenwing but found it too stressful to ride in street traffic, with all the shifting and tricky maneuvering. She now rides just her scooter because it's more nimble, quicker and easier to respond to traffic, and needs less room to maneuver.

People underestimate scooters! Lots of people don't even know there are scooters bigger than 50cc or that the can hit 45+ after being de-restricted/tuned. Oh and I second that speed bumps suck.

Yesterday, I went riding with the Knights on Bikes. There were 15-17 Harleys, a Honda Cruiser, a Trike with a VW engine and my Downtown 300i. The 1st question that I was asked was would I be able to keep up. I said no problem. Off we went onto the Interstate to Mary’s Cafe in Strawn, TX. They were surprised that I could keep up especially when we doing close to 80. Nobody asked me about my scooter until the end of the ride. One guy said that it was his first rider with a scooter. But it was interesting, most of the riders were wearing black jackets except me. I was wearing my fluorescent green and black Tourmaster jacket.

Hey guys, please don't swear on the fourm. We could have younger folks browsing. Less importantly, it can also prevent this forum from showing up in the almighty google. ;)
I am going to add some sensor for a few here. Obviously you can find a way around that but that will just add more work for me. I try to keep the rules as minimal as possible but this is important.

Agreed.. I write here as though your son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter is sitting next to you. There's no reason to swear.. If you have to get a point across, bold it or underline it, or make it a different font, but please be considerate of the possibility of kids..
And, if you enjoy the site while at work, swearing gets the site blocked quickly..

let’s consider some of the common questions we’re asked about swearing.
Is swearing problematic or harmful?
Courts presume harm from speech in cases involving discrimination or sexual harassment. The original justification for our obscenity laws was predicated on an unfounded assumption that speech can deprave or corrupt children, but there is little (if any) social-science data demonstrating that a word in and of itself causes harm. A closely related problem is the manner in which harm has been defined — harm is most commonly framed in terms of standards and sensibilities such as religious values or sexual mores. Rarely are there attempts to quantify harm in terms of objectively measurable symptoms (e.g., sleep disorder, anxiety). Psychological scientists could certainly make a systematic effort to establish behavioral outcomes of swearing.
Swearing can occur with any emotion and yield positive or negative outcomes. Our work so far suggests that most uses of swear words are not problematic. We know this because we have recorded over 10,000 episodes of public swearing by children and adults, and rarely have we witnessed negative consequences. We have never seen public swearing lead to physical violence. Most public uses of taboo words are not in anger; they are innocuous or produce positive consequences (e.g., humor elicitation). No descriptive data are available about swearing in private settings, however, so more work needs to be done in that area.
Therefore, instead of thinking of swearing as uniformly harmful or morally wrong, more meaningful information about swearing can be obtained by asking what communication goals swearing achieves. Swear words can achieve a number of outcomes, as when used positively for joking or storytelling, stress management, fitting in with the crowd, or as a substitute for physical aggression. Recent work by Stephens et al. even shows that swearing is associated with enhanced pain tolerance. This finding suggests swearing has a cathartic effect, which many of us may have personally experienced in frustration or in response to pain. Despite this empirical evidence, the positive consequences of swearing are commonly disregarded in the media. Here is an opportunity for psychological scientists to help inform the media and policymakers by clearly describing the range of outcomes of swearing, including the benefits.
Is it bad for children to hear or say swear words?
The harm question for adult swearing applies to issues such as verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and discrimination. When children enter the picture, offensive language becomes a problem for parents and a basis for censorship in media and educational settings. Considering the ubiquity of this problem, it is interesting that psychology textbooks do not address the emergence of this behavior in the context of development or language learning.
Parents often wonder if this behavior is normal and how they should respond to it. Our data show that swearing emerges by age two and becomes adult-like by ages 11 or 12. By the time children enter school, they have a working vocabulary of 30-40 offensive words. We have yet to determine what children know about the meanings of the words they use. We do know that younger children are likely to use milder offensive words than older children and adults, whose lexica may include more strongly offensive terms and words with more nuanced social and cultural meanings. We are currently collecting data to better understand the development of the child’s swearing lexicon.
We do not know exactly how children learn swear words, although this learning is an inevitable part of language learning, and it begins early in life. Whether or not children (and adults) swear, we know that they do acquire a contextually-bound swearing etiquette — the appropriate ‘who, what, where, and when’ of swearing. This etiquette determines the difference between amusing and insulting and needs to be studied further. Through interview data, we know that young adults report to have learned these words from parents, peers, and siblings, not from mass media.
Considering that the consequences of children’s exposure to swear words are frequently cited as the basis for censorship, psychological scientists should make an effort to describe the normal course of the development of a child’s swearing lexicon and etiquette. Is it important to attempt to censor children from language they already know? While psychological scientists themselves do not establish language standards, they can provide scientific data about what is normal to inform this debate.

I know what you guys are saying about the Harley riders. I'm in the heart of Harley country...Milwaukee, WI. But for the most part I don't get much grief from them. They will either wave, nod, or do some other form of acknowledgement or do nothing at all. A couple of times you will get the snide remark from one of them but I don't care. They paid over $10k for their ride, where I got mine for $1 and ~$120 for parts. I did have two good encounters with other bikers though, one was a Harley group up here for the Harley anniversary and they loved the bike, and another was from a sport bike who said my little ride "hauled ass."
I guess the main thing is, no matter what you do in life, there will always be someone that will give you trouble. As long as you enjoy what you are doing and it's morally right, it shouldn't bother you.

You know what I think is funny about this thread... The concept is about Bitc_y Harley owners, and their go shove it attitude, and there is plenty of that coming from the sweet as honey scooter riders toward the Harley guys. Go Figure!

This post was not about Harley riders. It was about does riding a scooter make us less of a man, or woman? We all know we are just as much man, or woman as anyone who rides a motorcycle with gears. Its all about the joy of riding. Some bikes are not built to go the freeway. Some are just built for riding around the city, or town which is fine. For most major cities and towns, a 125cc scooter is a good fit for getting around. For others it might a 250cc maxi scooter or higher. Whatever works for the rider is fine. Now go out there and ride. 8)

Nope.. I've ridden several, but they're not my style of riding.. I'm a feet under me style rider, not a feet out in front of me..
The only "Harley's" that ever interested me is the Buell Ulysses, but after riding them I just didn't like the engine heat. Great bike that should still be still be manufactured..
As far as picking which bike, it's all about what bike will do the ride in comfort, but is basically the minimum bike for the ride. The big BMW GS will do everything very well, but I have just as much fun with the KLR. Yeah, the 400 Yamaha Scooter will easily make my 10 mile ride to work, but I bought the Kymco cheap and I love the thought of making utilitarian use of a beat up, 9 year old 50cc scooter. :)
And the 800 is an almost 30 year old BMW Airhead and I've been a BMW rider for 30 years.. It's not because they're expensive, but because they're reliable and funky.. :) I love riding this bike..

I work with several horse owners/riders.. For some reason I'm just not comfortable around them, other than head scratching and feeding them.. Just no desire to climb on their backs.. :)

Ha Ha!! They do have that look!! Now that I look at them I'm almost expecting to open them and see a movie projector from Grade School!! They're original for the time, but the R80 didn't come with them standard.. The handlebars are not original either, as the factory bars were taller and more swept back. I originally thought they were R90S bars, but I've compared them to others and I don't know what they are.
I actually hunted for that bike for 10 years I've had it for 6 since finding it in Kentucky. I had a 1982 R100RT and a 1986 R65 and sold both in an effort to find a plain jane R80 and have nothing but bags. I bet I bid on 2 dozen over the years on eBay, all going for a bit more than I'd give. This one was also a bid on eBay and the owner actually wanted $1000 more than my bid, but the Boss (his wife) told him he had to sell the BMW or the Harley, so he gave it to me at my bid price. The factory seats on these are as comfortable as sitting on a rock, so I found the Corbin Touring seat over by Milwaukee. Other than standard maintenance, the only thing I've had to do was rebuild the carbs a couple years ago.. Parts are still fully available from Bing and I rebuilt them both in a couple hours with no parts left over!!! ;D

Since I know you're local, I thought I'd toss this out there for you and anyone else who might be interested..

They don't' care what you ride to the rally, with the mix of normally 300 folks being usually 1/3 Guzzi, 1/3 BMW, and 1/3 everything else.. I've ridden my Honda Helix, KLR, and various other bikes over there, including both of my Goldwings!! Great party!! They feed you pretty much all weekend, and if you're a microbrew lover, it's a must not miss!!! They have a couple standard beers going all the time and then they have 4 tappers that have microbrews rotated all weekend!!
And beer is included in the rally fee!! I can't afford to stay home!!
And even though beer is free, the crowd isn't rowdy, but instead just a bunch of folks who enjoy beers, bikes, and BSing about both!! :) Great riding in the area, too!! Many of us jump on the bikes Saturday morning and go have breakfast in Platteville, and then wander the Mississippi before heading back later in the afternoon for dinner, beer, campfires, and laughter!!
I've been going to this rally for over 10 years and I won't miss it..
And enough hijacking.. Back to getting picked on for riding a scooter.. (speaking of that, a buddy of mine rides his Honda scooter down to this rally from Minnesota). This is a photo of both of our scooters at the Minnesota BMW Rally last year..

Several guys at work drive Harley Davidson's and when I told them I was interested in a scooter, they had no idea what to think. I little jab here and there and then I played along and told them I'd put a sticker on it "Baby Harley". Then I thought better. Really though they've been pretty supportive that there is just another rider out there. Took at little ribbing today with the pic below. Believe me I hand out shovels full at times so getting it back is just part of having fun at work. I thought it was funny and it just shows the American perspective on scooters (of course not by everyone, we know that). Don't take it too serious cause the guy who sent it to me has offered to come over and ride with me and my Super 8 150 and him on his HD anytime I want.

I do not care what anyone says, but us scooter folks have just as much fun as the motorcycle people do. In fact my scooter club, the Nevada Scooter Brigade, had some visitors on Cinco De Mayo 2014 from the Sky Island Riders Scooter Club out of Tucson, AZ. The more we talked the more we found out how quite a number the members had more than just one bike. At least a few had 5 scooters. They ranged from the small 50ccs to the 300cc maxi scooters. We even discussed how scooters are so much fun and enjoyable to ride. Some of the members of the Sky Island Scooter club were on town on their way to Zion National Park up in Utah. A good time was had by all. Were just as much man as those ride motorcycles are. I look forward to seeing those scooter peeps again when they are in Vegas. 8)
