Personally I use a 75-90 full synthetic gear oil.  A 75-90 synthetic should work fine in most all weather extremes. I use a 10-40 full synthetic in the motor. I also use synthetic oil in all my other vehicles, lawn mower, snow thrower, and garden tractor. Personally I think it's the way to go.

According to the manual the gear oil must be replaced at every 5000km. My Grand Dink was at every 10000km.
Why so often??
What is your experience? At my first change the oil wasn't dirty at all (unlike the engine oil)...

0W-40 Mobil 1 for engine (it gets COLD here in Korea) and 75W-90 Mobil 1 for gear oil. Both fully synthetic of course.
