Title: Carburetor upgrade
Post by: Kenho21 on August 12, 2009, 02:41:07 AM
Has anyone here ever upgraded the carb on the 50? Where can I find a good one to upgrade to with a 85cc kit?

I have an Arreche 19mm on my 70cc kit.  For an 85cc I think you would need a 21mm.  I have heard good things about the Delorto, Mikuni, and Oko.  My Arreche seems to be a very nice one, but I'm just a little frustrated with trying to get it tuned right.  I have heard the others are a little easier to get dialed.  The Arreche is very easy to make adjustments too, on a positive note, I'm just tired of having to do it!  I'm sure it would be the same with something else though.

Any idea where I can find them?

I would try Moped Hospital (mhr-usa.com) or provoscooter.com.  Provoscooter looks like they are out of stock, they might be able to get something for you though.  You just have to call moped hospital, they probably have an Arreche in stock though.  I have gotten all of my parts from either of those two places.

would you look at this link for me and let me know if this carb would work,it looks like the throttle cable linkage is on the wrong side does this matter? I think it might work but I'm pretty new and wanna be 100%. http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/D02632/Carburetor+DELLORTO+PHBG+21mm.aspx (http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/D02632/Carburetor+DELLORTO+PHBG+21mm.aspx)

It looks like that carb will work just fine. If you have doubts i would ask them when you order just to be positive, that way it is on them if it doesn't work.  Honestly, the Arreche looks to be a little nicer.  It has a plug you can plug the autochoke right into and it looks like it is easier to make adjustments on the Arreche.  I have never used the Delorto, I've just heard good things about them though.

The "racing black" version has more user friendly features.  Like the easy access main jet and the screw top to access the slider and needle.  I would definately spend the extra for this one if you go the Delorto route!  http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/D02696/Carburetor+DELLORTO+PHBG+21mm.aspx (http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/D02696/Carburetor+DELLORTO+PHBG+21mm.aspx)

I can't plug my auto choke into this one? I really kinda wanted to hang on to the auto choke feature.

I would even try a carb from off a 50 cc dirt bike. that should work fine. then you dont need auto choke.

It doesn't look like your stock auto choke will plug into the delorto.  I know that my auto choke unit is much bigger than what is shown in the pic.  They may make their own auto choke that you would have to purchase seperately.

Blue- why wouldn't you need an auto choke with a dirt bike carb?

Ken- I'm not certain, but I don't think that is the right one.  I think the flange that mounts to the intake manifold is different.  Not for sure, but I think you may need the 821/3.  I would also try to get one with a screw top where the throttle cable goes in, it makes making needle height adjustments very easy!  If I were you I would just call moped hospital and they can tell you exactly which model you need, 866-296-1625.  Might also want to get a throttle cable and a good selection of main jets.  Ask them about attaching the stock cable.  I'm sure it can be done, but on my zx50 it was a real pain!  My cable wasn't quite long enough so I had to cut a bit of the 90 deg. metal elbow off before it enters into the top of the carb.  Other than that it was a direct bolt on.

Cool thanks a lot I will definitely listen to your suggestions. I have dealt with the Moped Hospital before just received a package from them today as a matter of fact. Whenever I get the carb you may see more posts under this thread I hope you'll be able to help with suggestions like you have so far, as I am pretty new to most of this.

Thanks again,

I have the delorto on a Malossi 70cc kit, I did have to buy their choke kit, and you have to modify the throttle cable as shaka said. All in all, I wish I had bought another brand. The screw cap on the barrel is a GREAT time saver when tunning. I had to loosen the carb.  ,tilt it 45%, remove 2 tiny screws, just to adjust the needle.
