Portland girl needs help!
Bright yellow LOW FUEL light's on, but locking gas cap won't unlock.
So I coast into locksmith and 25 minutes of poking and twisting and cursing later, still no lock release.
What's happening here? Last fill-up, last month, no problem. Same (original) key starts my baby, no problem.
Today is Saturday. I need my ride for work on Monday.
Any ideas brighter than my empty light?

If you have one like mine on the DT300 , you have to push down on the cap as you turn the key. Have you tried that? Good luck. :-\

Same with my DT300. It takes a little finesse but you need to push down hard and then turn the key. I think the slots are a lot higher then the pegs on the cap.

Yes, I've tried your trick. But no pushing or jiggling, not even with lock-spray, have opened it.
My key works fine in starter. Worked fine last fill-up, last month.
I forgot to mention, my bike is a Venox 250 cruiser, not a scooter

C'mon you guys - Somebody help this lady out!
I know we have engineers on here - very bright guys....probably even brighter women....give her some options!
I drill out locks at work sometimes - but this is not an option here!
A locksmith could not 'pick' it?!
Is something in there? A bit of the key, or some debris ? Anything that might come out with a strong magnet?
Blow it out with one of those computer/cleaner cans of compressed air?
A bit of graphite powder, WD40 ?
Did a vandal slip something in the key hole? (I don't know if your gas cap is hidden, or out in the open like a motorcycle)
Dadgum, this would drive any of us nuts if we were getting low on gas, and we need to use our scoot and we can't get the bleedin' cap off!
I hope some smart scooterist will jump in here and help you out!

Recently purchased a new 2012 Kymco 500 Xciting. First time gas was low couldn't open cap using key. Got home, held key in unlock position and gently pried cap up with small screw driver. Heard long slow hiss. When hiss stopped lid popped open. There was a vacuum in tank holding lid shut. Has not done it again but the screw driver remains with the scooter.

As far as I know, no gas tank should have a vacuum when you open the lid. If the lid is vented you need to see why it was clogged, if not a vented lid than your tank is vented and the line got pinched, I would check the line out to see why.

Are you sure it is a vacuum and not pressure built up in your tank, with a vacuum, your carb gets no gas.

locking gas cap won't unlock.
I always start with the manual, but Kymcos can be really quirky. Then I drive over to the local Kymco dealer and ask,"WTF is this about?" and he usually clues me in (for free) and everything is OK. The last time was when I couldn't figure out how to turn off the red oil change light, even after reading the manual.
