Title: 2900 mile valve check LIKE 200i
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on September 16, 2013, 12:36:06 PM
Checked the valve lash last evening at 2900 miles on my LIKE 200i.
Both remained 'spot on' from the last adjustment, 1200 miles ago.
"Spot on" for me = .05 won't fit, while .04 does.
I am using .04 for both valves - engine sitting over night - cold, and using the TDC mark seen thru plug removed near fan. (confirming with big hole & 2 little holes being in their correct places on the chain sprocket and a little movement felt when grabbing both of the rockers)
Added a few drops thick gear oil to the area before replacing valve cover.(it won't run off like reg. oil while putting the vavle cover back on)
Loosened the iridium plug 1/4 turn and retightened while I was there - to insure it is not siezing since I used no anti sieze paste.
Disconnected the neg battery lead to see if this will reset the idle speed - since It seems boosted by 100>200rpm by the iridium plug. (didn't install the tach until after I changed to the iridium plug - so going by seat-of-pants tachometer)

Up Date:Disconnecting the battery did not change the idle speed - still @ 1950 rpm + or ++ (!)

I would use anti-seize paste. It's cheap insurance.

Curious why you would check the valve lash after only 1,200 miles? Did you hear unusual valve chatter? Did your mpg dramatically change? I check mine at 6,000 miles. Where did the miles go.  :)

No, no issues with the engine.   With less than 3000 miles on my scoot I am still learning this engine. I checked them at 200, 450, 1200 and 2900. 8 vavles over that period - 3 of which needed changing. The manual specifies checking them at weird intervals : 200, 1800, 4200, 6600.
The oil is to be changed at 1200 mile intervals - gear oil at 2400 miles.
All too strange for me - will probably settle in on : engine oil @ 1000 miles; valves and gear oil @ 2000; belt and Dr Pulley @ 8000.
I like pulling the seat/bucket and the front panel and going in there for a little look-see every so often. Wipe things down, blow off the dust, etc.
May try just removing the front panel next go, leaving seat in place.
BTW: disconnecting battery for a time did not change my idle. Still a little fast. But keeps me reassured at stop lights.

I'll follow the manual for engine and gear oil changes, but use my dealer recommendation for valve lash check every 6,000. Belt and sliders I'll check at 8,000. Depending on what I see I'll adjust upward or downward going forward after that. From my replacement of the spark plug at 4,500 miles I think that I'll replace every 6,000 miles. At 4,500 miles it was a nice golden brown.
