Around the world in 80 days
« on: August 18, 2017, 08:07:57 PM »
...no, not Phileas Fogg, but Mr Mark Beaumont.

Mark is one of those ultra distance cyclists. He was the former round the world record holder (unassisted), he cycled the length of the American continent(s).....

.....and is the world record holder for Cairo to Cape Town.

Mark is a fellow Scotsman and, after I met him a couple of years ago, struck me as a thoroughly nice bloke.

Anyway, he left Paris 49 days ago, cycled through Eastern Europe, Russia, Mongolia a bit of China, across 'stralia and is currently heading towards the north tip of New Zealand where he will catch a flight to Alaska and head down through Canada and then cross the US of A.

The rules are simple. Two crossing points in the north and southern hemisphere and 18,000 miles minimum. That's around 240 miles a day.

No drafting.

If any on our American cousins come across Mark on their scooter travels, give him a toot of the horn and some encouragement.

WoW !

What a fabulous accomplishment !
I have never even considered such a monumental trip.
Especially on a bicycle !

...Once had a dream about the Pan American Highway, though...  up in smoke.  Pfft !

I wish him all the best.

Well he's managed to avoid all the Australian spiders, snakes and various other beasties that can kill you you in 30 seconds and braved awful weather of New Zealand and he's now in Canada, along the border between Yukon and British Columbia - so I guess it's bears that are keeping him sharp at the moment.

Soon he'll be in the States, where the main danger will be getting shot by the locals or being run over by a trucker who is watching tv, texting on his mobile and chatting on his CB whilst driving his 80 tonne lorry.

Not long 'till you get back to the safety of Europe Mark!

 ;)

Very, very good article and video's of the fellow and his bicycle. One can only be in awe of someone such as he. He has accomplished phenomenal feats of super human proportion. I thoroughly this Snorvey and thank you for sharing. Couldn't help but notice that he encountered one of those North American religious chaps and that he graciously permitted him to pray for his safe journey. (Tonge in cheek) ;)

I think he needs all the help he can get Mac - and if that involves the big man upstairs kicking up a bit of a tailwind for Mark, then that's cool.

Just to finish this thread off....

Mark Beaumont should ride into Paris this evening after cycling the world in 79 days. I beleive it's on Facebook live, but other sources may decide to cover his arrival. Let's hope so.

18,000 miles across Europe, Asia, Australia, North America and back to Europe again. 240 miles per day.
