2003 Kymco Cobra 50
« on: August 23, 2010, 02:35:19 AM »
Hey everyone. I bought a kymco cobra 50 about 2 months. has 2500 miles on it but tops out around 25 at 11000 rpms. I've replaced the air filter, jet in the carb, roller weights, and variator drive boss. Sometimes I'm lucky to hit 30-35, downhill with wind on my side. One thing I did notice with the new drive boss, the scooter wont engage until 4000 rpms. before that it just revs up and squeaks. any ideas how I could get it to go faster? I appreciate it.

change the exhaust... ;D     2500 miles????????  dam, thats low... the squaking could be the belt, shouldnt be with 2500miles...have you de rescrited the cdi????.. doesnt sound like it.... drill 6 3/8 holes in exhaust on the bottom towards rear, do the cdi......you should be close to 45-50...    your revs do sound good tho,

2001-2003 had Cobra 50 with similar issues that was never fixed.
Checked EVERYTHING. Not only me, but also several mechanics.
Leads me to conclusion that this particular scoot had quite a number of duds...

Welcome to the forum. The only thing i did not see on your list was the cdi, should be able to unplug the green wire at the bottom of it. Your squeek is not good, possibly a roller turned sideways or a bad clutch spring should check all that out. Good luck

G'day mate, welcome to the forum. 2,500 miles is not much but the year says it is seven years old. I would look at replacing the belt at least. If when you get to top speed it seems to surge, that sounds like a cdi restriction. Good luck and lots of fun to be had with these scoots.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I replaced the belt on it, and I'm hitting 50 downhill which is a huge improvement. I'm thinking of replacing the clutch, just because when I took it off it looked a little aged. I found a clutch for 107 mm. I dont know if this is the right size. anyone think its worth purchasing? same with replacing the variator. thanks again

alot of the parts from s.a are good parts but i have one of his variators and im not sure if im happy with it.. i think these have a weight issue compared to others out there. could be wrong but it seems heavy to me. ;D

Hello again. Got it running at around 45. bought a new clutch and variator and runs great. I'm thinking of buying a 70cc cylinder (http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/M3113066/Racing+cylinder+MALOSSI+68cc.aspx). Should I upgrade the carb with this? Also, does anyone know if this is an easy install? Also, any other suggestions about what I should upgrade with this. Thank you
