Title: Stig Florida report
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on January 13, 2018, 04:43:07 PM
50's and windy here by the Gulf...but feels like -7°F at home...so no complaints. Found my Dunkin Donuts = happy traveler. Must be 35 old geezers in there..."Senior's WWII Ball Cap Day" apparently. Good for them. But glad I didn't wear my Dad's bomber squadron cap as my mom tried to give me. Would have sum splainin to do....as I was born in Munich shortly after the war.
Spotted 4 scooters...and one youngster riding his Triumph fast in 3 lanes of heavy traffic with his clutch hand in his pocket! (get some gloves, kid!)
OK, that's all I  got....
Back to Ohio tomorrow morning. Maybe my mirror parts came...
Stig, out.

Been to FL twice in winter for warm break. Got froze both times!
Sitting on 8th floor balcony enjoying the lovely 20mph, 50°F winds out of the north. Thanks to cell phones I saw weather predictions & brought jaket and scarf. Much heavier jacket and gloves in car at Columbus airport for 10° drive home tomorrow.
We come here in summer - with heat index @95-100....today is half that!
What a crazy winter.

So you was born in Munchen, or Munich. I was stationed in Schleieeheim, across the strasse from Dachau. It was an abandoned German Luftwaffe air field, about 5 clicks north of Munich. I was with the U.S. army. A supply sergeant helping with the deactivation of army units that were being reassigned to Nam. Two places I really liked in Munich was the Hofbrauhaus and the Deutsches Museum. I was there in 67. Beautiful country.

Mom joined Dad in Germany after the war. Brother & I born there.
Was back 2x playing in baseball tourney ...and Xmased 3 x in Garmisch.
Years later brother was stationed there with Pershings aimed at Soviets.....meanwhile I was a medic in sunny S.E. Asia.
We had 'em in a classic squeeze play.
Always been a big VW nut...the aircooled and Mk1 GTi's.

When my dad was in the RAF, we lived in Gutersloh, not far from the east German border at the height of the cold war. Front line Harrier jump jet squadrons were the main occupants of the base. My father worked on troop carrying helicopters. Interesting times and as you say, a beautiful country.

By the way... Florida. Don't they call that God's waiting room ? (The bits that aren't either swamp or theme park)

Don't understate the swamps! The Florida wilderness is actually quite impressive. It's a whole other terrifying world filled to the brim with life.

Oh Goodness - we've woken AMAC!
GOOD to hear from you.
Your dunebuggy have heat AMAC?
Say, didn't People 250's have a flap to open for radiator heat to flow over the rider? Man, that would be nice on a scooter.
Hope you are well, and having a good start to your 2018.
Regards, Tom

Yikes geography....

Ok let’s start here. Ya need hills to be a “Hillbilly” so that takes out florida.
Hard to have swampy and hillbilly together. I think what you’re looking for is a combo of swampy and redneck. That’s more old Florida..........

Back to the flick. It took place on a fictional North George river. North George has the hills ya need for the hillbilly. All Georgia is not flat like the coast.

Now did ya know the first true hillbillies were Scottish immigrants.

Thank you AMAC. I am now educated.

I did know that the Scots were the first Hillbillies - in fact I think I mentioned to our own Tennessee Mac.

There was a program on our television which investigated this - very informative. It also said that it was actually a Scot (or a group of Scots) that invented the KKK as well. Sorry about that.

We've given the world a lot of inventions. That one wasn't our best.

Yes the Scottish have stood out well amongst our friends and allies. They made a very strong commitment to the allies against the axis powers in WW2. We won't hold it against you because you didn't know where Deliverance was filmed. True is, I didn't either. One other tidbit: we went down to 2 degrees above last night. Berrrrrrrrrrr.

we call it 17 below here ,  same temp. here last nite,   much better than 30 below,  ( 23 below F. had to take gloves off to work, out side,  did that for 40 years,  see some people never learn ,   I did wonder why my brother moved to Portland 50 years ago,  he was smarter than me,.

If I could afford it, Id move to Honolulu. It's like summer there year round. Been there twice and it's where I'd really love to be. Scootin all year and laying around on the beach. You can sleep there if you like and no one bothers you. If they do, then Dog is just two streets over and he'll go find 'em.
