General Discussion / Brotherly Scooter Love.....
« on: June 13, 2017, 11:30:32 AM »
I picked up this just like new 2014 Like 200 yesterday for only $1300. She only has a little over 200 miles on her. I bought it for my older brother who just sold his Honda Shadow 1100. He test rode one of my Like 200s last week and fell in love with it, so he wanted one for himself. Another scooter convert!

Technical | How To / Re: Kymco People 50 sat for 4 years.
« on: June 05, 2017, 02:10:50 PM »
If the battery has sat uncharged for 4 years, I would replace the battery. I doubt the current battery will hold a charge for very long.

So my daughter was born and my 2000 People 50 sat for the past 4 years. Needless to say I didn't do anything to prep it for storage. I just rode it one day and it then it sat. A couple years back I finally drained the old gas out but that was it. I'm looking to get it going and obviously it won't start. I've recharged the battery and put it some new gas.

My plan is to rebuild the carb and I'm also thinking I should replace the fuel lines as I'm guessing they are all gummed up from sitting with the gas for two years. My question is are there any other suggestions on what I should look at? Also does anyone know what size the fuel lines are so I can purchase replacements?

Any help and suggestions are appreciated.

The 4th Annual Memorial Day Scooter Ride will take place a week from Saturday (May 27th) at 10AM in Port Murray, NJ. Aside from the spectacular scenery during the 75 mile ride through Warren and Hunterdon counties and the E. Stroudsburg, PA area, this year we're doing a lunch stop at the famous Log Cabin in Columbia NJ. This is one you don't want to miss! PM me for details.

Thanks for the videos and step by step tutorial. After watching the videos and reading everything, I'm pretty sure I can handle it. I ordered the variator tool off ebay, and I have all the other necessary tools to do this job. I'm gonna go ahead and order the parts and give it a go. If I screw it up, I can always take it to the dealer. Thanks again!

Is there a good video or tutorial on this service procedure? The Kymco Like 200 service manual isn't the greatest on this subject. Also, what plastic body bits have to be removed? Any special tools involved like flywheel pullers?

Thanks for your help!

Update: I purchased and received the Malossi belt from scooterpartsco.com in only two days. I would definitely order parts from them again.

After reading the below post and Stig's comments, I think I'm just gonna replace the belt with an OEM Kymco (Bando) belt. I can't afford to lose a few mph on my top speed as I frequently ride at WOT on the many 50 mph roads in my area.

Having said that, is Kymcopartsmonster.com a reputable site/business to order Kymco parts from? They offer the belt for around $48 plus shipping. If not, who would you recommend? I've never purchased Kymco parts at any other establishment other than my Kymco Dealer, which is about 25 miles away from my home. I'd just assume order online than driving an hour and a half round trip to the dealer.

Thanks for your helpful comments!

When my dealer dropped the Kymco line of scoters they lost their ability to buy parts from them. When I went in for a belt change at 12,000 miles they replaced it with a Malossi belt. I did notice a slight difference in the way the scooter behaved at take-off and at WOT. The top speed is down by nearly 3 mph, but not a big deal to me as I don't hold WOT of for any amount of time. When it comes time to replace the belt again I will go back to Bando. The Malossi was really designed to work best with their performance component.

Another great source of information is the Honda Elite 250 Yahoo group. The Helix has the same motor as the Elite 250, so mechanically, they are identical to diagnose. I used to be a follower/contributor there for several years before I sold my Elite 250 a couple of years ago. Great group of folks over there.

As already mentioned, besides a good cleaning of the carb, I would take a close look at the intake boot. Those are notorious for dry rotting and getting brittle as they get older and exposed to high temps. Since your bike is almost 25 years old, a vacuum leak at the intake boot is a distinct possibility.

Might want to try the folk on: The Honda Helix Discussion Board

Sorry if this has been asked before, but where is the best place to order and what brand/part # should I order for my Like 200 LX? I hate to go back to the dealer as he is almost an hour away. Is aftermarket better than OEM?

Thanks for your help!

Make sure you fill/check your air pressure when the bike is stone cold.

My best advice is to make it bigger that you think you'll need. I ran out of room in my garage and ended up building a second floor  to house all my parts. Also, make sure to add 220v service when you build it. Comes in real handy if you have a decent size compressor or welder.

My two Like 200's are going to be the first to go if I decide to part with any of my bikes. My wife seldomly rides her beige Like 200 since I got her a Vespa LX 150 last spring and I very rarely ride my Like 200LX since I have much faster scoots in my stable that I can ride.

Here's a couple of pics of my garage. I own five Kymcos, two Genuine Buddys and a Vespa. Not pictured are the two dozen vintage mopeds that I store in my neighbor's barn. All of these bikes serve different purposes and have various degrees of sentimental value, particularly the mopeds. Whaddya think....Am I a hoarder or an enthusiast?

I made my own drain pan from a cat litter container. You can also use an antifreeze container for an even lower profile. Just cut out the top panel with a razor and you're done. Works like a charm.
