OK it has been on a battery tender, it was in the garage and I did start it yesterday. WHO CARES! This thing is more reliable than my Xciting 500 as far as starting in the cold.

Technical | How To / Reliable Winter Starting
« on: December 09, 2015, 02:31:39 PM »
Just wondering what you do to make sure your scooter is tip-top for winter riding. One of the reason I upgraded to a bigger scooter is fuel injection. I heard it should start right up in the cold weather. So what do you do to make sure that when it is 20F out there that when you go to crank it up, you get a reliable start. Here's what I'm thinking:

1. Synthetic oils
2. Good battery
3. Iridium Spark plug

Would non ethanol fuel help? Anything else?

General Discussion / Reaquainting myself with an old friend
« on: December 05, 2015, 08:17:29 PM »
Well today I fired up Bandit (2013 KYMCO Super8 150) today. I've been having battery issues with the Xciting so I thought I shouldn't be neglecting the Super8's battery. It took to the Battery Tender well and only needed a couple hours of charging. Firing him up though after only riding a couple times in 2.5 months was a bit more of a challenge. It was very comparible to the Spring startup after winterizing him. After a good warmup I came back into the house to get bundled up. Coveralls, riding jacket with liner, gloves with windbreaker slipons and last but not least, I cracked open a couple of handwarmers to slip into those gloves. I immediately noticed the huge weight difference as I backed out of the garage. Bandit felt like I was tossing around one of my kids when they were little. Oh how we get used to the weight of a bigger scoot. I took off down the street and then came the second observation. Nimble. WOW, I can just toss this thing around the street, left to right, at will. A smile comes to my face and I hit the country roads. Around one of the lakes I ride and put on about 15 miles. I fillup at the gas station and bring him back home. In goes the Sta-bil into the tank and in the house I go. Wow, these hand warmers are just getting going. I head out again to circle the other lake in my area and another 25 miles have gone by. I get back home and have logged 1.5 hours of riding on Bandit and feel like a kid who just got an early Christmas present. So much fun I now see why people own more than one scooter. I thought I had graduated and was off to college with my Xciting 500. Bandit has reminded me of why I fell in love with scootering to begin with. Hello old friend.

General Discussion / Miles Rode
« on: December 05, 2015, 07:59:15 PM »
2014 was my first year of scootering. First year of riding anything 2 wheeled other than a bicycle. I put 3700 miles on my newly purchased (March 2014) 2013 Super8 150 (Bandit) from March to November 2014. I promptly got Bandit back out of winter storage in the Spring of 2015 and started riding. The goal was to hit 10,000 miles by the end of the riding season As of the beginning of December 2015 Bandit has 8300 miles. Well short of the 10,000 I had hoped for. But there's a twist! Enter "Mike the Tiger" my newly aquired 2010 KYMCO Xciting 500Ri. Mike entered the household near the end of September. I immediately put 150 miles on him just getting him home from the dealer I bought him from. Since I've logged 1000 miles on Mike and Bandit has felt like an old worn out shoe that nobody wants to wear. Realistically that puts us at 9300 miles, just 700 shy of the Spring goal of 10,000. I don't believe I'll get to the goal with 3 weeks of winter riding. With battery issues in the Xciting I'm down for a few days til the new Lithium battery comes in. Even if I don't hit the goal, I had a hellava time coming close. 2016 brings thoughts of a summer tour through multiple states, more scamping and the normal commutes to work. I can't wait.

I'm looking at a 2010 500ri (no ABS) with 4500 miles on it at a dealer. Anyone that could give some insight on what a fair price would be I'd appreciate it.

Super 8 150 / Super8 Electrical Issue
« on: July 22, 2015, 11:42:39 PM »
So I'm riding home one night a couple weeks ago and notice the lights dim a little as I'm driving down the road. I was off the accelerator but thought it a little early for them to dim (like they do  at a stop light when stopped). Paid no mind to it other than thought it was a little weird and maybe the light module may be going. The lights still worked so I didn't figure that was it. Over the next week or so I'd go out to start it and I'd hit the starter switch and absolutely nothing. Then hit it again and it would start as normal. Sometimes it would take a third press to make it start. Over the next week it kept doing the same thing but I'd either manage to get the starter button to work or I'd kick start it with no issues. As I'm riding back and forth to work I've been monitoring the battery voltage. Normally running it would stay at like 14.0-14.1v. While having these issues, it was fluctuating between 12.5-13.5v. Once it got down to 12.7v the turn signals didn't give that nice dinker dinker dinker sound. The time between the noise was longer and muffled. You could tell the voltage wasn't high enough to run the turn signals. Then all of the sudden the voltage would jump to 13-13.5v and all would work well. One morning I noticed the brake light was out. Now I have a real issue. I recalled somebody finding that a connection in the brake light was causing the same sort of issue but then the next day all was working again. I went away for the weekend and now when I turn on the ignition I get no lights, no dash lights, nothing.

I started looking for the real issue tonight. I turn on the ignition and get nothing. I turn on my voltmeter which is wired separately and I have 12.7v. I checked all 3 fuses in the battery box and they were good. I checked the continuity per the service manual of the ignition switch and it was good. I started filming for a vlog and as I'm filming and there are no dash lights, they all of the sudden come on. I try the starter and it cranks away. I have a little trouble starting it but I liken it to the week it's been sitting. It starts and all seems working well. I hit the turn signal they they don't even come on. I hit the horn and I can barely hear it over the motor running. All of the sudden the dash lights brighten up for no reason. Now the horn and the turn signals work fine. The battery voltage quickly climbs to 13.6v. I shut it off with the ignition switch, turn it back on and it starts fine. So it is working (for now) but i know the problem is not fixed.

Anyone have an idea on what to look at next? My feeling it that it is a wire shorting out intermittently. But I have no idea on what to look for. What ever it is, it is not draining the battery cause it never seems to go below 12.5v, even after sitting for a week when it wasn't working. What could make it go from full power to half power or no power at all? When it has full power, all works as it should so I don't think it is a turn signal, headlight, brake switch wire, etc.  Would the main ground connection to the frame cause this?

Any suggestions appreciated. If I get this solved it is going on youtube. GET YOURSELF MENTIONED BY HELPING ME FIND THIS CULPRIT. Or I can be mum about your help but PRAISE YOU ON THE FORUMS.

And another one. I don't believe this is a KYMCO dealer.
