People GT 300i / Flyscreen rattle
« on: December 28, 2013, 03:07:34 AM »
I'm getting some sort of vibration rattle at low rpm that appears to be coming from the flyscreen. Anyone else getting this?  It is only at low throttle settings, and fairly annoying at a stop light, but goes away as the engine spools up. I've tried putting sections of foam weatherstipe tape between the flyscreen and upper cowling, but that hasn't really helped much. Thinking of trying a bead of clear silicon, but that seems like it might be a little too drastic.

People GT 300i / GTi belt change - dumb question?
« on: December 28, 2013, 02:53:48 AM »
Does anyone know if the belt can be changed on the GTi without removing the clutch or primery pulley, like on the side of the road if it broke?  I've only been riding scooters for about 3 years, and have never had to do a belt change so I don't know if this is a dumb question or not. I have a Polaris RZR sidexside with a CVT and it is no problem to replace the belt on the side of the trail, and it has proven wise to carry a spare.  But how about the GTi?

Noticed there is a nice roomy space under the floorboards aft of the radiator and forward of the battery box to carry a coiled up spare belt.  Just don't want to be stranded on the side of the road with a broken belt if it can be avoided.

People GT 300i / Slow drags
« on: December 08, 2013, 04:11:48 PM »
Won second place in the Slow Drag Race with my GTi at the 5th Annual Southwest Scooter Fiesta in Gilbert AZ yesterday. The nicely balanced People allowed me to win all my heats in the slow race until losing the final race to a highly modified stripped down Ruckus.

My prize was a real nice Omni-Cruse throttle lock http://www.omni-cruise.com/ provided by Dirtball Customs in Mesa AZ

Unfortunately I don't have any photos.

And I only ride it ATGATT.  Not really a scooter, but rather a squealer.

People GT 300i / GTi300 flaw
« on: November 10, 2013, 06:15:35 PM »
I finally found a flaw. For the longest time I have searched for one, but up until now my GTi300 has been a perfect scoot. However, I found a particular, but minor short coming;  I can't just ride off the curb where I like to park in front of my local Albertsons grocery store. The underside is just too low and will hit the edge of the curb on the way out. I can easily go over this curb on both my Fly 150 and Scarabeo 150, but the GTi is just a little too low and made this awful scraping noise.  I'm bummed...   :'(

I know this is dumb, but nothings perfect, right?

People GT 300i / GTi on the Freeway/highway
« on: October 30, 2013, 11:29:20 AM »
Finally got a chance to get my GTi out on the highway for an extended high speed ride. Rode it 100 miles, of which 80 was fast on the highway and freeway (posted 65 & 75mph). This machine really goes! I even had a 20 knot crosswind changing to a headwind for most of the ride. Very comfortable cruising at these speeds and higher. Every time I ride it I am further impressed with it. What a great scoot!

People GT 300i / Over 2 WEEKS since a post on this sub-forum? Wow!
« on: September 04, 2013, 10:07:50 PM »
Well then I will just have to make a post on how much I am liking my new GTi300.  Put about 500 miles on since buying it a few weeks ago.  This machine is a real joy to ride and operate. I’ve rode motorcycles for 45 years, and this is my 3rd scooter since being introduced to them 3 years ago. Inherited my dad’s Piaggio Fly 150 that kicked it off. Then found a super deal on a large-wheel Aprilia Scarabeo 150 which I liked even better. I really liked the way it handled and performed just up to freeway speeds, but it just wasn’t enough to keep up with sustained freeway speeds (in AZ most are posted 65 or 75 mph – which means drivers are doing 5 – 10 above that).  So after buying the GTi I have relegated it to a “buddy scoot” or for just around town when I know won’t need to go on the high speed highway for any length of time.

Anyway, I’m quite impressed with my Kymco.  I’ve took several panels off to change the spark plug to a NGK Iridium one and to check all fluids and to install a Battery Tender pigtail. Like many others have stated before; the fit & finish and build quality is second to none of the European or Japanese brands I have owned.  I like the low center of gravity and the way it handles, the riding position, the ease to get it up and off the centerstand and the fact that it also comes with a side stand.  The rear case seems to be very usable and adequate for me and conveniently holds my helmet, gloves, and light jacket in it when going into a store. The under seat storage is not vast, but it nicely holds a water bottle and miscellaneous items like tools and tire repair kit, maps, and room for a little more.  I really like the large vibration-free mirrors, and absolutely love the turn indicator with audible tone!  I wish all my bikes had this fantastic safety feature.

I installed the Biondi windscreen that I bought from Scooterville. Although it looks nice and I didn’t find it to have any distortion issues that some have reported, I did find it focused the wind blast right into my face and seemed to increase the wind noise to my helmet even with my face shield down. I like to wear my HJC IC-33 ¾ helmet when riding my scooters, and even with earplugs the wind noise and slight buffeting was annoying so I took the windshield off.  I’ll try it again when the cooler weather comes, and perhaps I might even cut it down some.

I have a couple of nits, and I hope nobody misconstrues these, which sometimes does on these forums, that may put them off an otherwise superb machine. They are really quite small things. #1; the brake levers are not adjustable to allow them to be rotated up or down on the handlebar. There is a pin on the clamp that holds the position in a small hole on the handlebar that prevents me from ideally rotating them slightly downward for a little more comfortable position (for me). They are essentially positioned horizontally. #2; the radiator overflow bottle is hard to visually check, and I assume will be hard to top off. #3; this seat is firm and maybe even a bit hard, but I am hoping it will soften up with use. I might be spoiled as the Scarabeo has a seat that is next to my living room La-Z-Boy in comfort! I do plan to take off the seat cover to see if I can modify the bumstop to give me a little more room to scoot back. I’m 5’10”, but seem to have long legs for my height.  But other than these minor things, I’m very pleased with the GTi300.

Below are a couple of photos of a friend and me with the GTi and ‘Beo last weekend.

People GT 300i / Deal of the century?
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:30:57 AM »
A dealer in the Phoenix area, who primarily sells KTMs & Husqvarnas, in addition to side by sides and is focused on the OHV market, tried Kymco scooters and just didn't do well with them. They were closing out the line and I noticed their add on Craig's List. Last Thursday I picked up a demo '12 GTi300 with 851 miles for $2995 OTD. This included sales tax, license, docs & destination. It looked completely new with not a scuff or scratch. Sold as new with the 2 year warranty.

I requested the dealer do the 600 mile service on it, but they wouldn't since they claim to be loosing money on it. So I bought it and immediately changed the engine oil & filter, rear drive gear oil, cleaned out the oil screen (there was nothing in there) and checked the filter and coolant levels. Will be putting in a NGK CR7EIX spark plug as soon as I can get one.

I got real close to buying one of these two years ago, in fact I test rode this very same unit, but just couldn't pull the trigger. But with this down and dirty price I just could not resist.  Wow, what a fantastic machine!  As many others have mentioned the fit & finish is as good as I've seen. A little vibey at idle, but other than that it is superb!
