Iridium spark plug
« on: April 04, 2024, 12:19:14 PM »
Are Iridium spark plugs still the best way to go? I've had them in all my other 3 scooters with very good luck. I want to put one in my new People S 150i ABS. Good idea?

nothing wrong with iridium....the 'best' anything is subjective...price, longevity, performance, etc... I had to think about it for a second but none of my 3 bikes currently run iridiums (my People S200 did)...all regular NGK plugs. I think the main benefit to iridium in an automobile is the much longer life span...in bikes/scoots with easy to change plugs it's not as big of a deal. They do claim less fouling and potentially better performance.
I seriously doubt the 'butt-dynamometer' test would note a real difference...but iridiums are excellent plugs and if you've had good luck previously, go for it!

These thin little plugs in a scooter make me nervous.
So, I've installed Iridium NGK's in my LIKE200i and the Liberty150i - and leave them alone for many months. My idle seemed stronger, smoother and raised the RPM's a few - which was reassuring when sitting for a light in heavy traffic.
Over-the-road felt no difference.
I did notice a difference with my LIKE's engine behavior when I tried the proper Denso Iridium. I went back to the NGK.
I carry new spares under the seat if needed....though can't imagine how I, Major Tom, would correctly diagnose a bad plug while out on the rural road, in the dark and rain!!

sorry to change topics.. (iridiums are good, use with confidence!)...but does everyone know what they would do if they broke down on a rural road? Stig?

I don't have bike towing insurance (I keep meaning to sign up for the American Motorcycle Association - AMA) to get their 'free' towing...but I really have no idea what I'd do if I broke down. I don't own a truck, nor do I know anyone close with a truck...I guess I could call a towing company...

Do others have a plan in place in case of a random roadside breakdown?

Hawk regarding breakdowns yes I’m in the same boat as you, ie no truck or friends with truck/van. I am however better placed here in the UK as you can buy breakdown insurance with roadside assistance. If they can’t fix it then they’ll load your scoot onto a flatbed and take you either home or a garage of your choice. Only ever needed it once in 40+ years of biking BUT I always carry a tubeless tyre plug repair kit…

Check your dimensions! Your Kymco Scooter likely fits inside a handicap taxi!  Please forgive, I know it's a hijacked topic, but I took it as I found it. It was too good to pass up :-)

Made in the USA. You don't have them where you live?

Here in Italy we wouldn't think too much whether commercial or not, or allowed or not.
Any car or combi where it would fit in gets the wildcard.
Here in my vicinity every scooter dealer might pick you up with his van, though might cost you a nice dinner.
Happy and safe scootering, Ruffus
