Today after filling up with gas could not start downtown 300i
Checked everything, brake switches good, fuses good, kick stand up, brand new battery, still, no start!
After new battery was installed lights come on but no cranks at all?
Had to get towed.
I’m thinking starter went bad? Any ideas out there?

Stand safety switch?
-
Start/brake switch (es) on brake levers? Run/stop switch on right handlebar?
Karl

New battery fully charged, brake switches both working, engine stop switch in correct position,
Stand up, cluster panel lights up, fuses all good, can hear fuel pump running but will not crank..

Starter relay or solenoid?? Run a jumper from the battery side of the solenoid to the starter side. If the engine starts, with the ignition switch set on run, then it's either the relay or solenoid, more than likely., but could be start switch or ignition switch. There is also a small wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid. Make sure it's connected and you get 12+DCV there when the starter button is pressed with switch set on run (Stand up)

If you hear a click when pressing the starter then the solenoid is fine. Wiggle the connecting wire to thr starter motor (just in front of the rear wheel cover) and try again. Also check the spark plug connection.

Safety Kill Switch?

has your scooter miss firing and dieing at stops,. it could be the reg. has killed the stator, and you have no spark, or very week spark, my dealer told me it was the CDI OR IT COULD BE THE HARNESS SHORTED OUT, I changed them and still no spark, all that is left is the Reg. and the stator, I installed the REG. NO SPARK , I am waiting for warm weather to install the new stator ,

Well guys, I have the DT stored in my garage, battery tender hooked up, full tank of fuel. Started it up Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, it wanted to start, but wouldn’t. The battery is 27 months old, so I put in a new battery, same thing. It sounds like it wants to start but then it sounds like the battery is getting weak. Any suggestions? Kick stand up, kill switch is off, dash lights are working normal, I can hear the fuel pump kick on, it cranks over, it just doesn’t start.

OK, Pip. Another whole different problem with a different side number on a DT300i. Starter spins engine, right? Does it sound different? Why start it Monday and Tuesday and then again on Wednesday?

A pair of jumper cables walks into a bar, bartender looks up and says "You're not thinking of starting something here are you?" :) I apologize. I just couldn't resist.

Hee Hee Mr. Paul. vgrafx Try holding the gas wide open and spinning the motor real good. Then release the throttle completely turn off the ignition and turn it back on, wait for the speedo and tact to finish their swipe and then push the starter, no throttle. See it that helps.

It doesn’t sound any different, on Monday and Tuesday, I actually drove it. Only up the block, I live in an over crowded city, so I actually park the scooter,on the street, so I have a place to park my car when I get home from work. Honestly, it’s been really cold, Wednesday was 28 degrees. But before that, the battery light was on, while it was running, but then turned off after a few seconds. I just figured that the battery was starting to get weak.

Do you have a trickle charger? Those short trips may not be enough to keep the battery charged.

Yes, I keep it on the battery tender. I’m thinking that it’s something else, even with the new battery, it sounded like it wanted to start, but didn’t, I was just draining the new battery. So I figured I would stop and you guys, before I went anything further

Try what I suggested pip. Sometimes my DT 300 acts the very same way and after I go thru the routine I told you about, it starts right up. Only take a moment to try it, what have you got to lose?
-
ole two wheels, I will definitely try that, I hope it is something as simple as that. It just bothers me, even though it’s been ridiculously cold and snowing and I haven’t taken it out for a nice ride, I hate when gremlins mess with my stuff.

I know exactly how you feel.. The reason I said to let you speedo and tact finish their sweep is that is when the fuel pump is pressurizing your fuel system and your computer is booting up. Mine did the same thing. After I went thru the procedure, It would fire right up, but then I had to kind of work with the throttle for a moment or two, as it didn't want to idle, but that only lasted a very short time and then every thing was back to normal. Can't really explain the why of the matter, but I think it had something to do with trying to start the motor before all systems were on line?? But if are not getting spark, then that opens a whole new can of worms.

ole two wheels, you are the man!!! I did what you said...... and it struggled a bit, but finally started [emoji106]. Thanks so much for the little trick. I ran it for a good 15 minutes and shut it down. It started right back up. I’ll have to wait and see,how she is when I get back. Leaving for Myrtle Beach, for the holidays,Thursday. So until then , Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New year to you and your family and all of the forum members as well. Thanks again. Now I can enjoy the holidays!!!

The prize goes to Mac! Hoist him on your shoulders, mates! Well, drag him then. Get him close to the podium so we can give him the award! Flooded start procedure. Whoda thought!

We had some really nice weather in Jersey on Saturday. So I went to start the DT to go for a little ride. Would it start again!!! I’ve had the new battery on the tender, I tried Mac’s procedure, and would not turn over. I decided to check the plug. When I took it out, the one end was black and loaded with carbon, the other end was bent, almost at a 90 degree angle. I have not changed that plug in over a year and a half, have no idea how it bent. I put the stock plug back in and it started right up. Drove for an hour and everything was fine. IDK

It's interesting how times have changed. Back in prehistoric times the first thing to inspect with a problem like pipsters' was the spark plugs because they often fouled out due to the leaded gas, flooding, excess oil consumption, weak spark, wrong gap, etc. Nowadays, what with unleaded gas, EFI, ECU and closer engine tolerances, spark plugs are good for so many miles we now overlook them as the culprit, or as a diagnostic tool, especially when it is not easy to access them, as is the case in our scooters.
