Xciting 500 / XC500EFI battery x 2 both flat in 1 hour
« on: April 13, 2016, 02:25:18 PM »
Hi all.

I was so excited to get my scoot back, I took It for a run to a town 30km away, and then cruised the streets for 30 min.
After I switched off the engine, it would not restart, battery flat symptom.
My wife delivered a fresh battery and I drive 50km to the mother city (cape town) to fetch pizza. After the purchase, again, scoot would not start, flat battery symptom.
Again, the wife to the rescue with jumper cables. 1st turn of the key, and it starts right up.

NO dash lights indicating a problem,  so what could it be.?

Xciting 500 / Where does your xc500 temp gauge point
« on: April 13, 2016, 11:28:37 AM »
I just got my scoot back, after the cam was replaced, and I took it for  a run in 30km up the road to a town there, where I cruised around for  a bit, when I noticed the temp gauge was higher than where it normally is, at the top of the notch in the middle.
Now it moved another 2mm higher.
I turned off the engine, and I could hear the fan, but that is as far as I can go, as the battery is flat now.
I am waiting for my wife to bring me another battery, (50km drive and someone is not happy!)

Xciting 500 / XC 500 EFI - hesitation and worse.
« on: March 31, 2016, 11:44:51 AM »
Yesterday, it started.
A hesitation at speed, it happened about 5 times on a 30km freeway ride.

I stopped at Bike shop, and they indicated maybe air filter, spark plug, nothing serious.

I replaced those, and today it got much much worse, more hesitation than actual acceleration, and lots of cutting out.

By the time I got to the bike shop, I was hearing some engine noises that I have not heard before.

Mechanic says engine damage, maybe crank bearings, or exhaust camshaft again, or decompression cam, etc.

What can I say except  argh!

Xciting 500 / Hesitation at speed
« on: March 31, 2016, 02:52:50 AM »
Yesterday it started.

I am riding 130kmh,and suddenly there is this hesitation for a moment.
Revs are at 7000.
It happened a few more times,  so I slowed to 120kmh.revs at 6000.
It happened again.
I stopped and checked oil=full .

I notice it happens when engine hot.

I replaced the brisk spark plug with regular Plug, still happening.

I took out the air filter(very dirty), and the phenomenon is still there, but less.
I was revving it on the central stand.

Tomorrow I replace the air filter and the fuel filter.

Any ideas?

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Fun run cape town - done & dusted
« on: February 21, 2016, 10:11:17 AM »
First event of this kind here, all makes invited.
25-30 pitched up.
We took a spin around camps Bay, and over kloof nek to obs for refreshments.

A pic or three.

This one taken at the start, in green point.
A BMW C600 was there. Very smart.

These photos above and below taken at the end in obs.

Some very nice comraderie and seeing old friends/making new friends; priceless.

I had to join the Vespa club, as there is no kymco club.! [emoji1]

Xciting 500 / Mods-led spots reworked
« on: February 14, 2016, 10:17:34 AM »
This sat I spent time working on redoing the led spots on my scoot.

Recently I had to get a new front tyre,
which is when the need to redo things came up.

I did not see that the technician had bent the crap out of the spot mountings to get access to the front brake mounting bolts, when fitting the new tyre.

But I did see later when the front was jumping up and down while riding, and stopped to take a look at the cause of this new behaviour.
I took the scoot back to the shop and a balance sorted that.

The pic below is the way out used to be.
The bracket,  L shaped, was facing back, and with the spot secured in place, left no access to the front brakes topmost mounting bolt.
Also, the spot was slightly hidden by the front fender, so some illumination was blocked.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Cape Town wine route pics
« on: January 30, 2016, 09:59:19 AM »
Xciting500# and myself got together and    jumped on our scoot's  to eat up some kilometres, and taking in the scenery for hairy bob.

First,  we admired our rides.

And then we admired them some more.

Some hilly wine country.

The best pic of all,  our mountain. Home.

All in all,  a good ride,  loads of fun,  and finished off with coffee and chat.

I successfully converted to led headlight and parking lights, only requiring some light modifications to fit.

The actual led lamp.

Xciting 500 / Variator rollers fitted incorrectly by dealer
« on: January 23, 2016, 06:59:53 AM »
My scoot was in the shop for a new crank a few months back.
I decided to open up the CVT because performance has been a bit low since then, with revs too high for the kmh.

Once open I saw the rollers had been installed the wrong way in the variator with the result that the metal insert, had extended through centrifugal force and had ground the side wall on 5 of the roller paths.
I had to file the walls down to get some sort if evenness, but I don't have a dremmel tool, so there are filing marks in the aluminium.
I tried my best with a file to smooth it out, and fitted new rollers.
What an immediate effect on performance! Especially on pull away.
I have not hit the highway yet, so cannot confirm improved top speed, but that is expected.

I also cannot say what my mcguyver to the variator will do the long term.

I suppose I should budget for a variator.
Malossi here we come!

Xciting 500 / Exhaust can time again
« on: January 03, 2016, 05:12:50 AM »
I had  a BMW f800gs slip-on can before which had  a nice deep rumbling sound.
I really liked it  but now there are metal bits rattling around in it,  and the sound has become too loud, so it is time to replace.

Xciting 500 / New Top box and rear brake led
« on: January 03, 2016, 04:52:00 AM »

The new top box I just fitted - looks good I think.
I was able to mount it a little further back, making more room for the passenger.
This model comes with a backrest, but I think I will MacGyver that , just like I did with the backrest you see in the pic.

Xciting 500 / Solenoid issue symptoms
« on: December 08, 2015, 04:44:36 AM »
It has happened twice now that when starting the starter motor just ran on until the battery went flat.

Since then I have been having odd things happening regarding starting.
One time it will be fine, next time I need  a jump (I carry jumper leads now)

Mackie says it is the solenoid, since turning off key, or, red Off button does not work.
Luckily a generic is available and is on order since kymco original part requires a gold bar in exchange....

Just some info if you find similar symptoms occurring.

Xciting 500 / Suspected water temp issue
« on: November 30, 2015, 01:24:24 PM »
My kymco XC500EFI has this suspected problem with the water temp.

Starting from cold, and riding on freeway, temp guage stays at 0.sometimes even goes further down.
20 min on freeway it stays cold.
I come to stop/robot on off ramp, and temp goes to normal.
From then on it stays at normal, freeway or city.

If I ride around the suburbs, from cold start it also takes a long time to get to normal.

If I idle from cold start, it goes to normal after a period, but less time than when driving.

I recently swopped out the thermostat (when I noticed issue) with an old one I had from 2 years back (it came installed in the scoot when I bought it-3 years old at that time) (don't ask why I changed it then - I forget) to see if the issue would rectify itself.

The behaviour I have described above is after this recent swopout.

Before this recent swopout, the temp would go back to cold after hitting normal, if I went back on the freeway.
(this is with the now 2 year old thermostat)

So , since the behaviour changed with the thermostat changeout, it must be that right?
I also replaced the radiator cap.
Water is Clean and green.

No pirate part available for the thermostat, agents only @ ZAR850(59usd),which is seriously painful!

With radiator cap off I see the water level rise and bubbling a bit.
This must mean that the water pump is working.
In  any event the temp never goes over normal (radiator fan is working correctly, only comes on after normal is reached)
No water in oil.
No  oil in water.

It  can't be temp gauge sender unit, because it does go up eventually.

It  might be  cabling issues, but I have wiggled them while driving and did a complete rearrangement of the Cabling to the gauge sender unit.

I took off a cover to feel the pipe from the top of the thermostat to the top of the radiator while I am driving.
It gets  a bit warm, but not cooking, until I come to  a stop sign/robot and have to wait a bit.

That is all the info I can provide.

What can be the issue here?
I am trying to avoid another thermostat at ZAR850(59usd),  but if your collective wisdom says that is the issue I will bow to your superior knowledge, as my brain is hurting from trying to work this out now.

I will hear from you soon, no  doubt.

Xciting 500 / Temp stays at cold position for very long time.
« on: August 04, 2015, 12:05:15 PM »
I have noticed recently that the temp gauge stays at the cold start position for a very long time before it moves up to just above middle of the Guage.

I opened the radiator cap, and topped up with distilled water, but not much was required.
The overflow bottle has had the level dropped  to mid way twice since I got it back from the shop (crank replaced).

The dropping level in the overflow has never happened before. I have had this scoot for over two years.

I do live close to the highway and drive at 120km continously for long distances shortly after starting the scoot.

It is also colder at the moment (winter),
so I might be overly concerned for no reason.

Does your xc500 also not warm up quickly..?
