Super 8 150 / Speedometer cable and brake test question
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:25:44 PM »
My speedometer and odometer both work, but I noticed recently that the connection between the cable and where it goes into a round silver ribbed nut (for lack of a better term) is greasy and loose.  I cleaned it off, tightened it as best I could, but after the next ride it was the same thing.  I only first noticed this after my recent spill, so I don't know if it was like that before.  There is no grease on the floor below the scoot.  What is up with this?

Also about the rear brakes, I saw in the manual about testing the rear brake, and from the poor description and photograph, I see that there is a little pointer and a marking on what I guess are the guts of the rear brake.  It says about the two lining up.  Is that when the scoot has the brake handle squeezed in or left loose?  Also, it seems that my perception of if the marks are lined up or not would change from if I'm kneeling down and looking at it from the rear or if I'm on the floor looking up at it.  Can someone fill me in on how to check the rear brake correctly?  Also, from the level the front brake fluid shows, it's in good shape. Can I assume the rear brake is okay too?  Do they wear out at different rates?

Super 8 150 / 1,800 mile check
« on: May 19, 2015, 12:01:42 AM »
I'm getting ready to do this check and see that I will have to replace the air filter.  I saw something on the internet about putting some oil on the filter before installation.  Is that true?  If so, how much should I use and how do I distribute it so it is all over the filter?

Technical | How To / Squeaking from front of scooter
« on: May 16, 2015, 08:13:20 PM »
By way of background, I dumped my S8 the other day.  It has been running, don't notice any difference with the steering or brakes, and I thought the damage was all cosmetic.  However, today when I took it for a short ride, I can hear a small squeak that sounds like it's coming from the front, and it only happens when I go over bumps.  When I got back to the garage, engaged the front brake and pushed down on the handlebars, it was squeaking then too.  I looked the front wheel over but the only thing I saw that looked amiss was the end of the cable going into the right side(when astride the bike) of the fork was loose and rather greasy.   I tightened it back up again (I'm assuming that's the speedo cable).  Any thoughts on what the squeaking could be?

Technical | How To / bike pump
« on: April 20, 2015, 04:58:06 PM »
Was thinking of throwing a hand pump in the underseat storage of my scoot for emergencies, but will one of those be of any use pumping up the scoots' tires?  I don't mind pumping about, say, 20-30 strokes but don't want a coronary if it's going to take lots more.  This will only be for topping off the tires, which, in my experience, have only ever been down about three pounds at worst.  The kind I am considering is the type that attaches to a bicycle frame and is a long, slender tube.  Thanks.

Technical | How To / Post incident postmortem
« on: April 09, 2015, 11:30:49 AM »
I advised in my last post that my scooter started once again after I replaced the cap on the spark plug.  However, I can't help but wonder if there is anything else going on with the scoot, since I wonder why it stalled out only when I went WOT.  Could I have also flooded the engine?  What about going WOT made the cap come off the spark plug?  If the engine is flooded, what has to be done to restart the engine?  Could this incident, since I tried numerous times to restart the scoot before I found the disconnected cap, have damaged the plug?

If I do use liquid wrench to try to loosen the plug, how long should I wait after spraying it on before trying to remove it?  Before I replace the plug, does the cylinder holding the plug have to be cleaned of the liquid wrench, and if so can it just be wiped off or is there some specific cleaner to use?

Thanks in advance for your input?  FYI, I've started the scoot up twice since the incident but due to rain haven't ridden it anywhere.

Technical | How To / My S8 died on me
« on: April 05, 2015, 09:03:35 PM »
I took my scooter out on my third ride of the season today.  I had no problems with it before and the previous rides put about 17 miles on it.  Even starting it for the first time, it took a few hits on the starter button but it did start.

It started right up today and I went for about two miles.  I was on a quiet section of road and decided to give it full throttle.  I guess that's what did it because I heard some pops, I think from the exhaust, and it lost power and cruised to a stop.  I also remember smelling something like smoke, but don't know if that was me.  I tried to start it back up but nothing happened.

What happened and how can I fix it?  When I stored it, I filled up the gas tank and put in some stabil.  I did not put in new gas when I took it out of storage.  Please advise what I should do.  Thanks

Technical | How To / I haven't winterized yet...
« on: January 20, 2015, 07:08:49 PM »
My life has been such a mess lately and I haven't winterized my S8 yet.  Fortunately, I do have the scoot in a heated garage, but it is near the garage door so it does get blasts of cold air several times a day.  I ran it the last time early this month, and started it up this past Sunday.  Tomorrow I am off and want to do something to prep it for storage, because I am sure it will be too cold for more riding until at least April.

I want to change the oil, clean the air filter, put some Stabil in the gas tank (it is almost a full tank of gas in there now), do the draining of the tube leading from the carburetor and puke tube as shown in Wayne Kreps latest video, and wash off the scoot.    In the owner's manual it says about a tablespoon of oil in the cylinder (I assume they are talking about the tube the spark plug sits in--am I correct?).  If so, it may be a non-issue because the last time I tried to get the spark plug out I couldn't.  If I can this time, can I use Marvel mystery oil for the cylinder?  Can I also use MMO for lubing the points on the scoot that the owners manual say should be lubricated?  I am also going to put the battery on a tender and bag the exhaust and cover the bottom of the scoot in a bag to prevent mice from munching on the wires (I can't use mothballs as Zombie suggested as it is a community garage and I'm sure it would be a problem).

Can you suggest anything else I should do?  Please let me know.  Thanks

Roadcraft / Stopping
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:23:46 PM »
When you stop, do you put both feet on the ground or just one?  I'm just curious about other's experiences; I've always done two feet but yesterday when I had my scoot out I tried just doing one foot and felt very off balance.

Technical | How To / question about oil
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:09:19 AM »
Do scooter engines burn oil over time?  I had done my oil change at 600 miles and am now at 1200.  When I did the change, the oil on the dipstick covered the entire crossmarked area; now it shows only halfway up the stick.  I know it is not leaking when parked as there is no oil stain below the scoot.  Does it just evaporate?  I am planning on doing another oil change as part of the storage prep in a few weeks but wonder if I should do it now since the oil level is clearly decreasing.  Is this normal?

I was just checking kymcousa.com and see a number of scooters listed on their non-current models page, including my Super 8.  What's up with that???

Super 8 150 / the 6000 mile oil change
« on: July 12, 2014, 02:59:01 PM »
After a quick 13 mile run this morning to get my scoot to 600 miles, I did the oil change.  Of course, I watched the youtube videos put up by Wayne and some other guy to prep.  Thought I wasn't going to be able to when the side bolt didn't loosen, but finally it did and I was on my way...all over the floor.  The container I used wasn't big enough when you factor in how much of the oil runs down the poorly located brake cable.  When I removed the other bolt with the spring and screen, I was glad  to see there was only like 3 or 4 shavings in it, and I cleaned those up easily.  After replacing the bolts, screwing them in carefully by hand, and then tightening them up with the ratchet, I made a mark on each of them so I'd be able to see if they've loosened.

I had figured I should remove an ounce and a half from my quart of oil, which I did with a mixmiser.  I took the scoot out for a short ride and after a mile checked the oil.  I didn't have to look at the dipstick because I could see oil up to the inside threads of the neck.  I had the scoot running in the garage for a few minutes before going out, and it is a hot day here.  Is it possible that the oil expands when heated, or did I make a mistake and put in too much?  I have a piece of paper under it to check for leaks, and will recheck the oil when the scoot is cooled down.

Super 8 150 / just curious...
« on: July 11, 2014, 12:15:57 PM »
When you guys stop your scooters, do you flip off the engine cut off switch and turn off the ignition, or just shut off the ignition without using the engine cut off switch?

Super 8 150 / slipstream windshield
« on: June 29, 2014, 09:42:45 AM »
Anybody put a slipstream universal scooter windshield on their S8?  I've seen it mentioned being put on other Kymco bikes but not ours.  If so, which model did you choose and how do you like it.  Did you leave thd stock windshield on and just put this one behind it?  Does anyone use any other brand of windshield?  Does it help stabilize you when you're going along at high speeds to stabilize the bike?  Also, how high is the top of the windshield compared to your head?

Super 8 150 / On a happier scoot note...
« on: June 24, 2014, 12:56:07 PM »
I found this camera bag at a flea market--it's the kind that has the lens facing down inside the bag so it's generally a triangular shape.  I figured it would make a nice sized little bag for the back of the scoot, just for little things like my tire pressure checker and napkins to wipe the dipstick on the oil, so they're not rattling around under the seat.  It had rings on the back so I used zip ties to attach it to the rack.
