Super 8 150 / Yet Another Super 8 headlight failure!!!
« on: June 12, 2014, 04:01:00 AM »
Riding home Tuesday night, I hit my high beams. After about 3 or 4 seconds, my headlights completely shut off! When I switched back to low beams, still nothing!  >:(
When I stopped though, the dim mode came back on. As soon as I started moving again, they shut down again!
So I turned the scoot off for a few seconds, hoping the system might reset, and it worked! My low beams were working normal again. I tried the high beams again, and it all shut off again. I restarted the scoot a second time and rode home with only low beams, and they worked perfect.

I remembered reading a thread on here about the light control module failing. So, I went to the dealer this morning.
Since faulty headlights constitutes a safety issue, the owner made the shop take it in to check immediately! (Of course, the fact that I ripped them a new one for the botched 1st service probably helped me get fast service this time too!)
They checked for error codes and guess what? FAULTY LIGHT CONTROL MODULE!!!
So they ordered me a new one (under warranty) and said it should be in in about a week. Luckily, since my low beams still work, I can still get to work and such.

The owner also told me if they stop working altogether, to bring it to them and he would get me one of their demo scoots as a loner till it's fixed! Apparently, they're trying REALLY hard to redeem themselves!

On a side note:  I was informed that the mechanic who screwed up my 1st service is no longer employed there!
DOING THE HAPPY DANCE!!!!!!!   ;D

Super 8 150 / Anyone actually use the sidestand on their Super8?
« on: May 30, 2014, 04:45:09 PM »
I've used my sidestand 2 or 3 times since I've had it. Only for a few minutes when running in for something and right back out.
It seems like it is too short for the scoot. The scooter leans over so far on the sidestand, that it seems like a good sneeze will cause it to fall over. Plus, the foot is so small, that if you are parked on an unpaved surface it sinks in the ground and is useless (the feet on the center stand have the same issue).

Wondering if anyone has modded their sidestand to be slightly longer and/or added a wider foot to allow parking on various surfaces?
I'm thinking I will be doing this before I go camping this summer.

Any opinions appreciated.  8)

Saw this online earlier today, and fell in love!
It's a 2012 Yamaha T-MAX. Hyper-modified by custom bike builder Roland Sands.

I WANT ONE!!!!!

Super 8 150 / Gotta love cheap plastic parts!
« on: May 20, 2014, 05:14:03 PM »
Had a nice surprise this weekend. I was wiping the scoot down to clean up the grime from some rain riding on my day off. While wiping down the rear fender, the housing for the license plate light decided to fall off on the ground! The base was still attached, but where the cover screws on, the threads just shattered!

I was a bit pissed, since I just bought the scoot a couple of months ago, and it only has 1050 miles on it.
Then I remembered......Even though I bought it "NEW" a couple months ago, it IS technically a 2012 model that sat in a dealer showroom for over a year. So, it undoubtedly had been poked and prodded by more than a few grubby little fingers in that time. So I probably shouldn't be TOO surprised if 1 or 2 of the cheap plastic parts ends up breaking.

Oh well!!  The part is cheap ($19) and should be in by payday this week. Until then, some good contact cement and a little black electrical tape are holding it nice and sturdy!

I plan on modding the rear section later this summer anyway. Gonna move the turn signals inboard (WHERE THEY SHOULD BE ANYWAY!), and ditch the hangdown fender altogether. Then a custom license plate bracket and light that's built a little tougher than the plastic crap that comes stock. I think it will look a lot better after I can do that.

Now I just need the time and money to start working on it!  8)

While enjoying several days of great riding weather this week, I had the pleasant experience of having a rock thrown up and nailing me right in the knuckles yesterday. Didn't cause any real issue, but it did hurt like hell!
It immediately got me thinking back to my younger days of playing on dirt bikes. So I started considering the idea of a set of handguards on the Super8.
I looked around online and no one really makes anything with scooters in mind.
Now, I have no problem with the idea of modifying a set to fit on the scoot. I was just curious if anyone here has put a set of them on their scoot before. If so, were there any major issues with mounting them, and did they help with stuff like cold or rain protection.
If anyone has any experience with this, I'd appreciate the input.

General Discussion / A bad start to riding season.....
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:37:14 PM »
Started the day this morning, hearing news that a local rider was killed in an accident early this morning. He was definitely not a scooter rider, but a member of a local motorcycle club. If you live in the St Louis area, you may have already seen it on the news.

Reports say he was on a 2 lane road, when an 18 wheeler pulled out in front of him. He had no room to stop, and nowhere to steer clear on the narrow roadway he was on. He ended up going underneath the 18 wheeler, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

I was sad to here about the accident, and THEN....... I found out it was someone I knew!  :'(
Not the way I wanted to start the day.

I know we hear all of the RIDE SAFE speeches on here a lot. But, I have to say it again. Because, today it hit WAY to close to home.

Please, please, PLEASE!!!  Be aware of everything around you when you are riding, and be ready to react at all times!
NEVER count on other drivers to see you coming! Because some them just aren't looking to begin with.

Ride Safe!  And prayers for a fallen rider!   R.I.P. Jeff  :'(

Super 8 150 / Another stupid newbie question!
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:27:46 PM »
Was out riding today, and after riding for a while, I stopped at a light and the Super 8 stuttered for a second and died.
It started right back up without trouble, but seemed to be idling really rough.
I got home and started going through everything. The throttle play was fairly excessive, so (thanks to a great video wkreps posted a while back) I adjusted it. I also set the idle screw up a little.  It all seemed a little better when I fired it up.

THEN, I notice an unplugged wire. I followed it back, and it was the wire for the electric choke! I found the other end and plugged it back in, and then I went for a test ride. It seemed to be fine at stops. I got back home and let it idle in the driveway, and it idled as smooth as the day I bought it.

SO, here's the stupid question-
Does the electric choke engage anytime the engine is idling with no throttle input?  I thought it only engaged when the engine was cold.  Either way, it's running fine now.

Super 8 150 / Super8 fairing extensions
« on: April 30, 2014, 01:52:59 PM »
I've seen a lot of photos of Super8's with these cool looking extension pieces on the front fairing.

Does anyone know if someone manufactures these and sells them, or are they just custom pieces made by the owners?
I would love to put something like that on my Super8. They look awesome, and it looks like they would improve the wind and rain protection. If somebody sells these, I would buy a set in a heartbeat! If I have to make some myself, it's just gonna look like crap, because I suck at building stuff like that.

Here's a picture of a scoot with them that I found on one of the other threads:

Super 8 150 / Fuse issue
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:05:34 AM »
This past week, the small 7 amp fuse on my Super8 150 has blown twice. When it blows, the turn signals won't work, and the headlight and instrument lights get dim. Then when I turn off the engine, the scoot is completely dead until I change it.
Are there any simple culprits that I can check that would blow just the little 7 amp fuse. If I can't find the issue, I'll be left with going to the dealer that has already provided questionable service.
If anyone else has had an issue with this, please let me know where to start looking.

Super 8 150 / [SOLVED: For Now]Saddle bags for a Super8?
« on: April 18, 2014, 03:00:32 PM »
Anyone know of any decent soft saddle bags that will fit on a Super8 150?
I'm just looking for a relatively inexpensive solution to have some more storage from time to time, that is easy to remove when I don't need them.  I've seen a couple of nice ones on other scoots, but they look too big for the Super8.

I'll probably end up getting a top trunk at some point, but trying to avoid that as long as possible since it puts the load so high on the scoot.

Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks!  :)

General Discussion / [SOLVED] How do I post photos on here??
« on: April 17, 2014, 06:17:13 AM »
OK, I'm a computer idiot. So, could someone tell me how to post a photo on this site?

I can't figure it out through the trial and error method, so I'll break rule #1 of The Man Code and ask for direction!

So, I bought a Super 8 150 a month ago. So far, so good. I'm enjoying it every day.

It is a 2012 model I got from my local dealer as a new old stock they had on their showroom all year, and never sold. It had 15 miles on the odometer, and  a couple very minor scuffs, which leads me to believe it was a parking lot demo scoot. But, the dealer knocked off all of the dealer and set up fees to meet my price. Saved me over $650 off the out the door price!   :)

So far the only quirk is a slightly rough idle at stops, and a mild little exhaust fart when I let off the throttle to slow down at stops. That being said, it has been fairly chilly and wet here in the midwest the last couple of weeks. So I hope that's all it is. Just curious if anyone else had that during the break in period? It's at about 380 miles so far. I changed the oil and gear lube just before 200 miles to get the break in lubricants out of it since the manual called for it at 200 miles. Going in for it's first dealer service today to get a full mechanical check up, since I'm not an experienced mechanic, and haven't found a repair manual yet.

All in all, I'm very happy with the Super 8 150 so far. Plus the money I've saved on gas has been unbelievable! 5 gallons in over 360 miles!  :D

Thanks to all the people on this forum for helping in my decision to buy the Kymco. Reading posts on here helped a lot in my choice of scooter.
