Sounds like it may be an additional problem , especially since it usually starts later even with a low battery. But I agree that replacing the battery may be a good starting point. Then perhaps a relay or something may be sticking.

To me riding seems like a safe way to pass the time . Socially distant, yet it relaxes the mind. I WISH I still had my scooter. I’d be a riding fool right about now. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23].

General Discussion / Re: Kymco - Expensive Warranty?

Not sure TBH Stig, I'll check that out.
In most places performing maintenance yourself or at a place other than the does not void the warranty. But it’s important that you keep any receipts.

My wife and daughter wear one all day at work.
Wife - Dr's office.
Daughter - dept. store. (thankfully the store finally mandated it for all customers too - as maybe 15% were wearing them prior to this. Store has a "greeter" at the door - to enforce the rule.

Stig
I’ll be honest. I’m glad they made it mandatory in my county. Why? Even grown men sometimes are intimidated by peer pressure. And most men were NOT wearing masks in most stores. So I often didn’t wear one either. But also felt guilty for not doing so. Now it’s mandatory. So I can wear one without feeling that others are judging my “manliness “ . Yep. That’s pathetic. But it doesn’t take much for us grown men to succumb to peer pressure to not look like wusses. Especially in certain areas where people start making things into political litmus tests, and you simply don’t feel like “dealing with it”

My heart goes out to you. THREE seems to be the tipping point. My mother and two of my three sisters live locally. And we often travel on out of town trips together. I can travel drama free with ANY one or two of them. My mother alone, either sister alone, both sisters, or ONE sister and my mother. But when ALL THREE are in the car for more than 3 hours. Ages : Mother, 89, sisters 65 and 63. OH BOY! I was persuaded to accompany them on a 400 mile trip where we spent 5 DAYS together. I won’t say NEVER again. But it’s not on my To do list. [emoji23][emoji23]. What gets me is that after each trip they seem to forget the drama and proceed to plan another trip with their “baby brother” accompanying them to assist in the driving/ refereeing.

General Discussion / Re: There are all kinds of riders

The way I see it:  I AND others on the road are HUMAN. And humans are NOT infallible whether it be momentary lapses in judgement, another motorist being careless, an unexpected road hazard, or simply other situations beyond our control .

Mirrors, lights, and protective equipment reduce the chance of accidents in the first place and increase the chances of surviving these accidents if they do occur.

In an accident ( whether avoidable or not) THE LAWS OF PHYSICS WIN

I had an accident as a result of me being a FALLIBLE human as ALL humans are no matter what we tell ourselves. When my meat and bone leg hit that aluminum sign post at (I’m guessing) 40+ mph, PHYSICS WON. But when my helmet hit the ground and gravel, and when my mesh riding jacket slid or rolled on the same graveled ground, again PHYSICS WON.

The signpost destroyed my leg. BUT the helmet and jacket overcame the gravel. As a result, I only had to replace part of a LEG . My IRREPLACEABLE head and torso were uninjured.

VERDICT: I TRY to persuade people to wear protection because Humans are on the road.

I don’t know if it would hurt resale value or not. But if the price is right, I’d get it regardless. I don’t really think of resale value when I make a purchase . I simply consider whether I’d enjoy it or not. The color is an advantage though. Visibility is always an advantage in my opinion. So the color is a plus in my opinion . It will increase the odds of both you and the scooter being SEEN , thus increasing the odds of it surviving long enough to be resold . Lol.

Xciting 500 / Re: Transmission SAE90
« on: August 07, 2020, 09:32:02 AM »
The 90 is the important part which is the thickness of the oil (please correct me lubricant gurus if I am mistaken) and the W is the operating temp range. I currently use Lucas 80W-90. 75W-90 is fine but I will see if I can find a good chart.

The manual simply states sae90 as the W will vary whether it is summer or winter etc.
Actually both numbers are important. But your basic premise is correct. The W is the viscosity when tested at 0 degrees F. The other numbers is the viscosity when tested at 212 degrees F. So 75w-90 flows like 75 viscosity at 0 and like 90 viscosity oil at 212. .Bottom line, yes it can be used in place of 90 weight oil (or any oil between 75 and 90.)

When I was riding, I glued a small , red , flashing light to the back of my helmet . I think it was the kind that joggers use to make themselves more visible.

Roadcraft / Re: Do you ride in flip-flops?
« on: July 22, 2020, 05:18:15 AM »
I’d ride barefooted before I’d ride in flip flops. At least then I wouldn’t have to distract myself with keeping them from falling off. And I’d never ride barefooted. I wouldn’t even ride a BICYCLE in flip flops.

I’m speaking pre-amputation. Post amputation, I’d have to Velcro it to my prosthetic foot to even keep it on. But I have a question. Would that be the flip side or the flop side?[emoji23][emoji23]

1. I hate seatbelts
2. I hate helmets
3. I hate masks
But:
1. I care about ME
2. I care about OTHERS
So:
I wear helmets, seatbelts, and masks

General Discussion / Re: No longer an E-Check. WWII bomber?
« on: June 29, 2020, 01:07:53 AM »
In Florida we never had statewide emissions tests. But we did have them in the mid-late 1980s for cars that were registered in certain metropolitan areas for a time. And we eliminated safety inspections in the EARLY 1980’s after our then Governor’s car failed inspection. There was a dark period of time when there was a large number of unsafe high emissions vehicles on the road.
Thankfully, those cases have gradually decreased over the years. Why? Because cars are simply BETTER. With computers, fuel injection, platinum spark plugs, etc., tune ups now consist of replacing spark plugs at 100,000 miles. Engines commonly go 200,000 miles before needing major work. The check engine light scares people into getting repairs because they think it’s actually the ENGINE getting ready to crash . (If it simply said “emissions “, it would probably be ignored) .

Suspension parts last longer and are often lubed for life . So neglect doesn’t matter a lot— And contrary to cars in the 1980’s , tie rods and ball joints actually will last a good while before wearing out. Despite people moaning and complaining about how complicated and expensive cars have become, let’s be honest. Those of us old enough to remember, can recall when the owner’s manual recommended checking oil at each fill up. People would be HAPPY if their car went 1,000 or1,500 miles before needing a quart of oil. Now, we complain if the car uses a quart before the next oil change is due. And most major emissions components such as the engine computer and catalytic converter are REQUIRED by law to have an 8 year/80,000 mile warranty. And mufflers are now usually stainless steel and last a good while. Notice that muffler shops either have diversified or simply closed.

Fortunately, The car that bellows smoke while misfiring and sounding like a TRUCK is increasingly uncommon. Even TRUCKS no longer sound like trucks.

We can partly thank strict government emissions regulation for the longer lasting engines, and federal crash standards for the fact that the car with the broken ball joint or separated tie rod is a very unusual site in a modern vehicle.

In spite of all that, there are still a few smoke bombs on the road. But not that many.

People : I bet you wish you’d never bought that scooter

Me: I can’t say that. I enjoyed it THOROUGHLY. I just wish I hadn’t fallen and lost part of my leg. My regret is the accident. That’s all.

My siblings response to the people:  we’re not going there. We don’t have time for what if’s. We can’t do anything about that. So it’s no use in even thinking about that one way or the other. We’re just moving forward and celebrating the fact that he survived and is doing well. We don’t need any negativity.

My mother’s response to the people. : That’s enough. I don’t want to hear it. That’s the end of that.

That’s just one reason why I love my family! They don’t live in the past. [emoji23][emoji23]

I’m thankful that although my riding days were short (8 months), I was 51 and immune to peer pressure and ridicule. I chose to ride my Xciting 250 and then my Yamaha Majesty 400 for the 45 mile one way commute to work 3 or 4 day/week weather permitting. My 30 something year old boss and other younger co workers would tease me about the helmet, jacket and pants on a SCOOTER. In fact I believe my last day at work pre accident, my manager somewhat tried to embarrass me by saying in front of the salesmen in a somewhat condescending manner, “Look at you with your little helmet, and jacket . All of that for a SCOOTER “ .

I remember saying something to this effect. Well, I’m riding on the highway at 60 or so MPH. At that speed, If I fall on the pavement, My body won’t know  OR care if I fell off a HARLEY or a SCOOTER. So I’m wearing this stuff” .  Little did I know I would find out personally just a couple of days later.

My boss said that his first thought upon hearing what happened was “I hope Darryl didn’t listen to me”. When he actually saw me, he stated how relieved he was that I was stubborn and couldn’t care less about being teased.

Anyway, I preach the virtues of protective equipment to ANYONE who will listen even if they’re on a 50cc . I even give my padded meshed riding jacket to a young man.

Sorry to read that Forbes. A salutary tale.

I’ve had a couple of serious “offs” in my 50 + years on two wheels, but on both occasions I’m thankful I didn’t hit anything. Just slid to a halt.

Even that though brought home to me the need for good riding kit as, with helmet and full leathers I was able to get up and walk away.

One of my good riding buddies lost the use of an arm following a bike smash, but has now done more miles on a series of modified trikes than he ever did on a solo. Just a thought?

I believe my physical AND mental ability to ride remains. However, economics is still an issue. Also, I’ve seen the looks of terror on several sibling’s faces when I even toss the idea out there. Although I don’t live for them, I do respect them. All 6 plus my mother were affected. But the two that live nearby seemed to suffer as much or more emotionally as I did. Had I not exceeded expectations and returned to normal life, I don’t think my oldest brother in particular could have fully accepted what happened. So until they can get to a place of acceptance, I’m refraining from riding again.
