When you removed the air box and put on the K&N filter you increased the airflow into the engine which causes a too lean condition. You need to either put in a bigger jet or repair and reinstall the original air box. Check the spark plug to make sure the scooter is not running too lean. Hope that helps ya.

Downtown 300 / Re: Downtown not starting

It doesn’t sound any different, on Monday and Tuesday, I actually drove it. Only up the block, I live in an over crowded city, so I actually park the scooter,on the street, so I have a place to park my car when I get home from work. Honestly, it’s been really cold, Wednesday was 28 degrees.  But before that, the battery light was on, while it was running, but then turned off after a few seconds. I just figured that the battery was starting to get weak.

Do you have a trickle charger? Those short trips may not be enough to keep the battery charged.

A pair of jumper cables walks into a bar, bartender looks up and says "You're not thinking of starting something here are you?"  :)  I apologize. I just couldn't resist.

Clean the carb jets because this scooter evidently sat for a long time. You need to replace the K&N filter with the original airbox to get the air/fuel mixture correct. Hopefully you have what was left of the original box. I would try to patch the original air box. And you need a new battery. You can find replacement parts here;

You need to remove the carburater bowl and clean the jets. They are most likely gunked up. Make sure in addition to using a cleaner, you remove and mechanically clean the small jet holes with a fine wire.  A lot of videos on Youtube on how to do this. Its a relatively easy job, and costs very little. After that I would run a little Seafoam in the fuel tank.  Did it run before you replaced the air box?

I would go to my local hardware store and head for the plumbing department. Find a suitable plug of rubber and fabricate something.

Did the $30 carb from monster parts work? Just bought 2012 Kymco that's been siting for over a year, I am sure carb is out.

I would highly recommend trying to clean the original carburetor first. The aftermarket ones are not near the same quality. But, if you must go after market, this one would work OK;

I dont think there's any real harm in starting a cold engine as long as it is allowed to warm up some before being stressed.
