That cold start mod came directly from kymco south Africa, based in Durban, North East coast. They import everything directly from the factory in Taiwan. So try your kymco importer.

The starting is now sorted, with a bunch of new parts being needed, like starter motor, regulator, some small cylindrical things sits left side if battery in a rubber sleeve, plus some kymco modified item, to increase petrol output when cold. Starts great now, instantaneous.
Only problem is,  I did not even get the scoot home, and it broke down again.
This time crank bearings, argh!

Grandvista 250 / Re: Considering a Grand Vista
« on: June 19, 2015, 06:11:23 PM »
I had a grand Vista 250, called grand dink over here. It was seriously abused by the time I got it, bought sight unseen(bad mistake). Anyways, I rode that thing like I stole it, 130km top speed. Needless to say, constantly zipping around at that speed cost me a new crank. But rock solid on the road. I felt quite capable on the highways.
Space under the seat, I could only get a full face in there, so topbox is a must.
Those mirrors are fragile, if you drop the scoot, it's bye-bye mirror.

Go for it.

Maybe switch to a thicker oil. Your bike is mass produced, and could have loose tolerances.

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Full+Synthetic+-+15W-40/N1195/C0252.oap

It could help w/ the heat too.

What we have now,  is the shop saying that the scoot is behaving properly now,  and they just took it for  a 50km run  with no sluggish behaviour like was happening with me. Weird!
OK, this idea comes to me; what about the issue being heat related?
What damage could be / have happened?

Zombie,  the oil was the standard 20w50 and the oil light was flashing when at idle after a long highway stint. The oil got changed to the high spec stuff to help with the cold start issue, which seems to have been sorted with electronic parts and starter motor. That high spec oil has only been in for a month.

Yep, guys, that oil sender unit has been replaced twice now.  1/2 fixed & 1/2 broken;sounds about right. Currently fully synthetic 5w40 oil.

I have also noted that the water temp arrow has crept upwards by 1-2mm.
But I did not worry about it because I have seen that the gauges do not always return to the exact same position the next time the scoot is started, so my thinking is it is normal.
The higher temp has been around since the head got replaced in Jan 2015.

UPDATE:I called to find out if it was ready.
Long story short, it was. Happiness!
Parts replaced:Electrical bits to improve cold start, two names I remember, regulator, starter motor, but there were more parts.
Other parts replaced:oil pump, water pump repaired as it was leaking.

There was a water leak I had to turn back for to get one hose clamp tightened.(I saw that at the garage when filling up)
The shop emptied out my FUEL tank on testing!

On the way home, it broke again,%$#@*
Suddenly it was holding back, and then cut out.
Started again first time, immediately, more than once, so that issue looks to be fixed,
although I would like to have seen if the first start in the morning was actually sorted.
To do this start issue fix, the starter motor was replaced, plus other electronics, including a special modified item to rectify
the XC500 cold start issue.I only had to pay for the starter.

The oil lamp issue: I cant say if that is resolved, as I did not even get home yet, and it broke.
Although there was an oil light shining when after I started it once I had parked in the yellow line,
it would shine/flicker when the revs were coming down, at about 2000rpm.
This happened twice, when I blipped the throttle.

At that point, I saw the water expansion tank was almost at the LOW mark.

I then attempted to drive the scoot back to the shop, but the engine was very sluggish, and
mechanically noisy, and it could not make it up a hill, so I had to get it picked up by the shop.

I thought I smelt coolant, but cant be 100% sure, just an impression I had.

Anyways, on the way home, I told my wife we will celebrate with some chippies!
I cant let ultra weird circumstances like these stuff up my day/week/life.

Until next time, stay safe.

The dealer called me saying that starting is still an issue-intermittent, even after a  new heavy duty battery. It is now going to an electrical expert who already has an xciting 500 in his shop.

All I know it is not an original kymco starter motor, but it is new,so some parts must be interchangeable,  I can only surmise.

Technical | How To / Re: Scooter Alarm Installation
« on: June 10, 2015, 05:55:42 AM »
I got one of those two way alarms, comes with lcd fobs. Supposed to give info up to 100m,but was more like 5m,so tossed it.
The best is the simplest, and now disk lock with alarm is my recommended solution, as no battery drain as a bonus.
Plus my scoot, XC500 weighs so much, it does not get touched by those with evil intent.
I just see folks admiring it on occasion.

I just bought a Motobatt that has 240CCA. Cost a small fortune! The bike shop is fitting it and  hopefully I should have it back by the weekend.
Using 5w40 fully synthetic helped last year winter.
The starter has been replaced as it got overheated from all the cranking I have been doing this winter. Plus the regulator has been replaced as well.
Hopefully this puts an end to this scoot's cold starting issue.

Yep, last time it went in for a cam job, Jan 2015.this time I have demanded an oil pressure test. They don't even have a tester in their workshop!

Lemon law. Yep, there is something like that, but not 2 years after the sale. The flashing oil lamp only started about 4 months back, althoughI did have to replace the oil sender unit within the first year of the sale. The cams wearing down started roughly the same time. Yep, it does definitely fit the lemon category. Everyone keeps telling me to sell, but I can only sell as spares(can't sell with a flashing oil lamp) , and no space for that.

I spoke too soon. The oil lamp is still flashing at idle, after a highway jaunt. I spoke to another kymco dealer, and he nearly had  a fit listening to what has happened to this scoot.,and now on it's 4th exhaust cam, and used head. He said together with the cam wearing so often, and the oil light, it is most likely now that  the crank bearings are exceeding their limits, hence oil pressure drop. He recommended a new engine. That is over 25000 Zar (about 2200 usd). I can't sell it to anyone in this condition, as Flashing oil lamps are seriously frowned upon when selling vehicles..... 😂
