Well that was annoying, went to change the oil. Got er up, put on the appropriate socket and..... stripped the bolt head into a nice useless chunk of Chinesium.
Pretty sh**e quality metal me thinks, but I mostly gotta blame the dude before me for cranking it down too tight. Got it off with some channel locks and a torch. Bolts ruined of course but another is on it's way and shall be here Sunday.
But let it be a lesson to be learned: know your strength and don't use it on your drain bolts!

Wait...You mean I shouldn't be using my impact wrench on those?
-
You talking the larger alloy cap on engine bottom, with the spring and screen? That thing is often overtightened, and often stripped on all brands of Asian scooters.
If it was the big oil drain plug stripped....that is rare bad luck. Let's hope that guy never touched the spark plug!

Revsin, tell me I didn't hear you say you used a torch, as in acetylene and oxygen???? I hope you meant, as in propane. If you put the blue tip wrench on that alloy, you're braver than me.

Thats overkill Tromper. I find a cheater bar and red Locktite works just as well. :D

No, just plain ole blue bottle propane torch. After all, I was only trying to drain the oil with gravity. Not create a pressure cooker bomb full of molten oil!

If you are loosening the 17mm plugs (either one) get a 6 point socket head not a 12 point and you will have far less chance of what just occurred.

use blue locktite you wont need a cheater bar and it holds very well
-
Question? Why would you use any color Loctite on an oil drain plug???

Agreed, a much better solution is to weld it on.
-
I dunno if loctite will do it. That's a real important bolt..maybe some JBweld.

If I read it right, revsin said he striped the head not the thread. Loctite nor J B Weld will fix that' If he can't file or grind it down to a smaller hex, then the only option is to purchase a new plug. AGREED?
-
I wouldn't even file it.
Regardless if it's the screen bolt or the actual bolt just replace it. Cheap and less work for better result.

Tromper and I were both joking. Guess it was lost in translation. :-[

Yelp, I was wondering how loctite or glue could help a rounded off hex. Tromper has the right idea. For all the work trying to salvage a mangled plug, it would best to get a new one. Don't know why folks find it necessary to tighten them to that extreme anyway.
-
people tighten them like that because the o ring is worn out

If its not to bad try the white plumpler tape on the bold and see if that holds.
