Grandvista 250 / Garage gas smelly or no?
« on: August 01, 2014, 11:31:29 PM »
I'm sure this may seem like a bit of an odd question, but with the carbourated GV250, does it have a vapor recovery system like the fuel injected scooter do? My garage has little ventilation. Practically none. My piaggio like my car don't stink up the garage with that raw gas smell.
My local MC dealer has a 2009 GV 250 with less than 1000 miles that they will sell me for $2700 OTD. It looks new. Really good condition and if it's not "stinky" I will by it this eve.

LIKE 200i / Almost 84MPG!
« on: November 04, 2013, 12:15:59 AM »
438.6 miles on 5.23 gallons. That's 83.86MPG. I'm pretty happy! I checked somewhere around 3000 miles too, but I was only getting around 65MPG. That was a four tank check too, so these checks should be really accurate. What's changed? I've slowed down a little. I used to always go 50 to 60 traffic permitting, and now do 45 to 50 typically unless the cars around me are going too fast. Also I did my tune up a few hundred miles ago with a new spark plug, and air filter. I adjusted the intake valve just a little bit too.

LIKE 200i / Tune Up
« on: October 25, 2013, 09:44:16 PM »
So about a month ago at 3600 miles ish, I did my own service again. So far all valve checks and adjustments were done by me. All easy! What I notice now is better acceleration, and a couple mph higher top speed.
Valves: like my first check, the upper one was a little bit loose. Instead of barely being able to start the 0.005" gauge, I was actually able to slide it on this time. Not easily, but it was 0.005". I tightened it to 0.004". Anyone know ft the top one is intake or exhaust? Just curious.
Spark plug: this was my first time looking at it. The gap was too tight. I don't remember the spec, but the right gauge would not even go in. The plug had a grey powdery appearance. Basically it looked good other than the gap and the used look. I replaced it with the one I got from parts monster. The new plug was gapped perfect right out of the box. I used the stock recommended plug as I'm a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy.
Air filter: it had a light grey powdery appearance on the salmon covered filter paper. I replaced it with the filter I got from PM.
And of course I replaced the engine oil. I'm using syntec 10W-40 now.
I don't know whether it's one of those things that got me a performance gain, or a combination of all these things. The gain is real though. I've had a few hundred miles to confirm it.

I wonder if these guys are any good? They have a few seats premade and judging by those prices it doesn't look too expensive.

Downtown 300 / Do It Yourself Valve Adjustment
« on: August 24, 2013, 05:12:46 PM »
I have a Like 200i. With the help of an excellent YouTube video the valve clearance adjustment is really easy. How is doing the check on a Downtown 300i?
Even though I love my Like, I am considering getting something bigger. It would be nice to be able to get on the freeway once in a while, and maybe even do a weekend trip. I have started watching the for sale cycle trader adds for this scooter, but if I can't do the valve clearance myself, that would be a deal breaker.
I don't like going much beyond the complexity of an oil change, but the Like was so easy. It took me an hour fifteen minutes, and that was including playing and pausing the video while I was doing it. I'm guessing you would have to remove or move the radiator on this scoot. Any help would be appreciated.

LIKE 200i / Synthetics, Scooter specific vs automotive
« on: August 11, 2013, 07:25:50 PM »
When I visit websites and read about scooter motor oils, they say that they are ok to use in wet clutch designs. From what I have read googling the difference between the wet clutch approved oils and the oils that are not ok to use with a wet clutch, the ones that aren't approved have friction modifiers that can cause wet clutches to slip. Friction modifiers make the oil more slippery.
It seems to me using a scooter specific oil, I am spending extra money to make my oil less slippery for a clutch that shares the oil, which my scooter does not have.
Confession, I am running Motul scooter oil right now not having really read all this before. I think I'm going back to the Royal Purple 10W 40 next change though. I think I spent twice as much for the Motul that I don't need, and may actually not be as good for this application.
What say you?

LIKE 200i / Fluid Changes at 2000 + Miles Today
« on: July 29, 2013, 03:23:34 AM »
This was my fourth engine oil change. I had done one extra when I checked my valves in between two of the scheduled oil changes. Nothing out of the ordinary with the engine oil. Just one small piece of something in the strainer screen. It wasn't metallic though. What was unexpected though was the trans fluid. It was clear. It looked like it had just been poured from the bottle. It was probably a waste replacing it, but its such a small quantity so it's cheap peace of mind.

LIKE 200i / Obstruction making gas fill up difficult
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:39:07 AM »
I just did my first gas up on my new Like 200i. There's a bar that runs across the filler tube that prevented insertion of the nozzle more than a couple inches. I had to hold the vapor recover seal of the pump back with my fingers for the gas pump to work. That left my fingers stinking like gasoline. Anyone know a work around?
