Technical | How To / Long time no post - fresh off a top end rebuild
« on: April 27, 2017, 03:00:16 PM »
Long story short, I bought my first scooter, a 2012 Kymco like around March of 2012 and joined the forum around the same time as Stig. After about 2 years I sold the Kymco to my dad and bought a Burgman 400. Since then he's purchased a Vestpa GTS and Honda Reflex and i've since regained custody of my first love.

However, around 10k miles (when I sold it to my dad) it had a oil leak I couldn't pin point. Took it to a dealer and they cleaned the engine and couldn't find it either. Nice guy, didn't charge me. So NOW i've got it back and she ran ROUGH. Oil everywhere, the smell of burnt plastic when starting, the clutch was slipping like crazy and it had periodic backfire. I decided to pull the engine and see what was going on, i was intent on having her run good as new.

Turns out the head gasket had been leaking, and the exhaust gasket was toast and therefore burning up the engine shroud and making it run like crap (and possibly the reason the head gasket was leaking?) and the clutch pads were chewed up to hell and back.

So over the past few weeks I dropped in a brand new clutch and bell, new piston rings, new base/head/valve cover gaskets, timing chain tensioner gasket, oil screen, and a fresh coat of wax :D All in all around $260 worth of parts and a few bloody knuckles.

This was my first time rebuilding a top end, it really wasn't that tricky as I though it would be. Lots of youtube videos and a pdf shop manual are all you need, just laying out everything so it was easy to put back together was the stinker.

Now she's back on the road, getting a low voltage error code, so a new battery is due soon, but other than that she's running like a champ and i'm glad to have my Like back. It's nice to have a small scooter again for short jumps around town. I love my Burgman but small bikes are so damn fun.

LIKE 200i / Passing the keys along
« on: March 26, 2014, 03:57:29 PM »
Well this weekend I passed the keys of my 2012 Like 200i to my dad... because I just bought a 2012 Burgman 400ABS brand spanking new for about $5,500!! I asked another dealer if they could match it as I would rather buy from them and they laughed and said they're going to jack the price up when I walked in the door... they did not. I had been wanting to get a second scooter capable of longer trips and bigger luggage capacity for a while. I originally wanted to keep the Like around for local trips and tearing up the streets in the city, but this way my dad or nephews can now join my girlfriend and I on rides and I was able to make a larger down payment, and I don't have to pay for insurance on two scooters. The best part about selling it to family is i'll still get to ride her on the weekends. I know she's going to a good home and will be cared for. I still plan on remaining active on this forum and look forward to what you guys do with your Likes.

Now as for how this Burgman compares to the Like... there is no comparison, they're two completely different scooters. The like embodies everything scooter. It's great for being stuck in traffic and quick trips to the store. I'd regularly push it to it's limits on weekend cruises 60+mph for a few hundred miles here and there. The Burgman eats up those miles and works about 1/2 as much as the Like when cruising at 60 and is OH SO COMFORTABLE. It's all the elements of a sedan crammed into a mid sized scooter frame. I was worried it would be to heavy coming from the Like but it's actually pretty easy to get around, park and put up on the center stand, it just takes a little extra heave-ho. The weight is LOW on the Burgman, below my knees and with the low seat height it makes it pretty easy handle at low speeds. I'm still breaking her in and taking it easy for the first 600-1000 miles, but I can't wait to open it up on the freeway.

LIKE 200i / Exhaust Cover tried to escape
« on: March 09, 2014, 05:15:06 PM »
So 3 weeks after installing new bolts in the exhaust cover after two escaped, 3 decided to fall off on a long ride. My GF and I rode to Biloxi yesterday, about 100 miles each way, and on the way back we traded scoots. She was on my like and I saw something hanging off the side. We pulled over and 3 of the new bolts I had just put in had come out and the fourth was barely hanging on, the cover was flailing in the wind. So it's back to home depot for new bolts, lock washers, and a sh**load of Loctite. I may also try to find some skinny nuts to help hold them in place this time.

LIKE 200i / Quick Makeover
« on: February 19, 2014, 06:26:03 PM »
Just a quick paint job to freshen up my Like. Every since I had my seat redone, the scoot went from a duo tone black/silver to a tri color brown/black/silver. That's too many colors for me. Ive always hated the grab rails anyways, i'm not sure why, I think they stand out too much. I finally did something about it. I used some flat black high-temp grill paint on the muffler and painted the grab rails to boot. I like the look. Next up is painting the cvt cover and rear rack to match and maybe masking off and doing the front forks. I think i'll leave the rims for now, if I wanted to do those i'd take them somewhere to be powder coated so it will last longer.

LIKE 200i / Getting custom seat made!
« on: January 21, 2014, 04:16:26 PM »
So my most excellent girlfriend got me a gift certificate for a local custom leather shop. For $125 they're going to shave down the "hump" on my like, and add 1 1/2" of memory foam and rewrap it in marine grade leather, it's going to be dark brown. The owner is also throwing in matching handle bar grip covers for free, even though I tried to talk him into letting me pay for them. I can't wait to finally have comfortable place for my ass. And i'm stoked about the brown/black combo.

LIKE 200i / Brake Pads
« on: September 30, 2013, 03:12:22 PM »
Approaching 10k on my Like 200i, I'm about due for a new set of brake pads. Has anyone changed them out themselves yet?
I'm searching online and trying to decide on what pad is best, kevlar organic? Sintered?

Looking on Kymco parts 123 the brakes are about $70 front and rear, but I don't know what material they are made of.

Amazon has some kevlar organic pads from D2Moto, front and rear set for $14. Has anyone had any experience with organic pads? D2Moto has sintered rear pads, but not for the front.

Mainly, when I search any site they say it's for the Like 200i, but when you enter in your bike 90% of the sites tell you they have no parts for the Like listed, so i'm not sure if they're actually the correct pads.

Basically, if you've changed your own pads, where did you get them from?

LIKE 200i / New retro Like
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:36:24 PM »
Browsing the depths of the internet I found this, I wonder if that badass rear rack will be available in the US. It also looks like a new design for the crash bars, two running down the cowl instead of one.  I translated this page into english, hopes it makes sense.

LIKE 200i / Like overheated?
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:57:30 PM »
Took my like 200i out for a 60+ mile ride yesterday. I've got 4500 miles on it, oils and filters recently changed. Temperatures were in the mid 90's and I had a 1/4 tank. On the last leg, probably after a 15 mile stretch of 50mph it suddenly started loosing power... it made a few "sphsssss" noises from the exhaust maybe every 3-5 seconds. I pulled over, came to a stop and it died. I turned off, tried to start it... nothing. I waited about 5 minutes. Tried it again and started up just fine. Went to the closest gas station and topped off and let it cool for another 10 minutes and headed the rest of the way home with no problems. Anybody confirm if this was an overheating issue?

General Discussion / Warranty Transfer
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:42:19 PM »
In case you didn't know, and two (2) dealers in town didn't know this..... Kymco's 2 year warranty IS transferable. Ive seen a few people mention on this and other forums that they were not. I did some reading up on their website and inquired about it and they said the 2 year is trasnferrable.
I purchased a used 2012 Like 200i (originally purchased in October of 2011) and just got my conformation today the remainder has been transferred. All you have to do is email them your info: name, phone, email, VIN and they'll enter you in the system. Easy peasey.
This is especially rad because I used the lack of warranty as a bargaining chip when purchasing.

I love my Like, but the body panels on it are like a puzzle box. I'm trying to remove my air filter to service it and an having trouble removing the bottom panel that covers the top 3 screws of the filter box. Does anyone know if there are anything other than the two screws and plastic tabs that hold this piece in place? I started to remove it then got worried about breaking the tabs. It's part # 83601 in this diagram.

I'll probably just get a socket screwdriver adapter and slowly work the screws out but if anyone knows the proper way to remove this panel without damaging it that would be cool.

LIKE 200i / Online Parts?
« on: May 29, 2012, 05:52:47 PM »
I'm having a tough time finding maintenance items online for a Like200i.
Got a quote from my local shop on some parts, this is what they gave me:
CVT Belt: $65
Brake Pads: Front $50/Rear $55
Air Filter: $28

Do these prices seem high? Does anyone know a good place online to find 200i parts?

LIKE 200i / Like Front Rack???
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:35:43 PM »
Just curious if anyone else has experimented with a front rack for the Like? I plan on taking some extended trips this summer and will need all the storage I can get. I'm thinking about trying one of the vespa racks, one that doesn't bolt on, rather is held down by "ratchets".  I know the Like being plastic it probably isn't a good idea to snug them down as tight as you would on  a metal bodied vespa, but for lighter items I think it would be fine. Any thoughts/suggestions????
