2001 starting issue
« on: June 18, 2012, 04:50:02 AM »
Bought this about a month ago and it did start after many tries...

Stupidly let it set and now it will not start.

I used to own a people and after letting it sit too long, blocking the square intake would help to start it.

Any ideas like this for a zx? Should I just try taking out the spark plug and putting a few drops of gas in?

Thanks in advance

I would drain all the old gas, add 2oz of Sea Foam to a fresh tank full, and new fuel/air filters. Always get a new plug with a non starting bike.

Where are you? UK/Canada? I don't think the ZX was in the US in '01

I thought the same thing but according to the vin# mine is an 01 too. I've been meaning to double check because something just doesn't seem right there.

Thanks Zombie
The kid that had this supposedly put a new plug in but I will get another.
It is an '01 with 10 K on it.

May I ask exactly which make / style of plug?
I do not trust what he may have bought and my scoot stores are closed today ( I have time to work on it today )

Is this it?

NGK BR8HSA

and will the manual link (thanks for this) posted in the CDI current thread be the manual for my year ZX?
If so, I will be printing it and binding it at the local fedex

Yep!

The manual is in the "Links to manuals" thread. It's one of the first ones

I was reading other threads yesterday (after posting) about spark plugs and it seems there are other options to consider for improved performance.
Sorry to double check, but should I just get this one or opt for another?

You can get an iridium plug. For the price/life span I stick with BR8-BR9 HSA'a

Thanks Z, it actually started right away today.
On my last attempt I added some seafoam and additional fresh gas...

It rides terrible and will be taken to the scoot store for an assessment (store owner is great and reasonable)
He will actually let me know if the repair is something I can handle.
Z - I will order or if available buy the spark plug you recommend. BR8-BR9 HSA'a
I wish I had a way to record the way it sounds and post it as the experts here would probably know how bad it might be...

In the meantime does anyone know where I can locate this missing battery cover? I have searched Ebay for weeks and nada and the ones listed on ebayuk will not ship to the US (sigh, very reasonably priced too..._)

The seat has some rips (seen in the same picture) Is there a patching method that might work Vs recovering the entire seat?

and lastly check this center stand, is it stock? I have a helluva time getting it "off" the stand and need someone to push me...
mind you I am 5' nothin but this is a first....
If it's not stock, I could also use a center stand please...

and it has only 8 k , not 10 k ...

thanks in advance!

dabnabit, just went outside to cover it and there is an oil leak under the trans... only rode it up and down the block 3x...

http://www.stadiumyamaha.com/  You can get all the parts for it here. Seat covers are about 45 bucks I think. Mention the forum foe a discount. Try tightening the lowest bolt on the tranny. Might stop a leak.

Been looking for that battery cover on eBay myself

The center stand on the Z is stupid. I know what you mean. The damn thing slides on concrete when you try to push it off the stand.

Good luck! I always recommend DIY. It's good to learn how everything works so when something simple breaks you can fix it in minutes instead of having to wait days/weeks at the shop.

lol thanks for the reply
at least I know the stand is oem to the scoot, I really thought it was a retro from something else...

as to the battery cover, any uk members that would buy one (or maybe two? ;)) and ship it?
I have paypal and would really appreciate it!
