Trip to the dark side....
« on: December 15, 2015, 06:28:44 PM »
I purchased this 2009 Genuine Buddy 125 this past weekend from the original owner with 172 original miles. The bike was bought by a woman owner and used until she realized it was not safe enough for her to commute to work on. It sat for around 4-5 years and was not running when I looked at it. She said her mechanic brother-in-law checked the bike over and said the carb was completely gunked over and needed a new carb. I paid a whopping $1K for it. I brought it home and spent about an hour removing and cleaning the bottom portion (float chamber) of the carb. The float bowl was surprisingly clean, but the slow jet was clogged up. I cleared the obstruction with a piece of very fine wire, reassembled the carb and she fired right up with the kickstarter. I put a new battery in her this morning and now the electric start works like new.

So for $1,030 I've got a practically brand new Buddy 125, which retails new for over $2,600 (not including prep, licensing and doc fees). There are deals out there, you just have to be patient and have confidence that you can revive a bike that's been sitting for a while.

Wow, great deal on a very reliable scooter! People I know with a Buddy really like them and are very brand-loyal. I test rode one, but The 10" wheels were just a little squirrelly for my taste, especially after enjoying the 16" wheels on my People 150. Have a blast with it!

I am glad your bike was running. The first thing I would do is change the oil. Like everything else oil has a limited shelf life. As long as you take care of the bike it will take care of you. Happy riding.

I would install new tires.  I used Michelin S1 on mine and modern buddy is very active forum for Genuine scooters.

Congrats on your find. You stole that thing. I researched buddy's before I bought my Like 200i. Great reviews and found nothing but good things about Genuine. I almost bought one until I finally went and sat on one. I'm 6ft and 278lbs and I had that "watermelon sitting on a peanut shell" thing going on. Didn't think that would be the bike for me so ended up buying my Like.
Enjoy your new scoot and ride safe, mscmkr

Thanks everyone! I already replaced the crankcase oil. I still need to do the final drive oil. I'll probably do that today. The tires look like brand new, but I realize that they're over 6 years old. I'll probably replace them in the spring.

This Buddy really flies. I was doing 60 mph on flats the other day. Even though it's a 125cc, it's just as fast or faster than my Like 200's. I'm a short guy (5'8"), so I don't stand out so much riding such a small bike.

Thanks again for the nice comments!

Great deal on your find. 👍 KBB estimates a value of a $1,730.

Be sure to check all rubber seals and the CVT belt. Rubber degrades with time and sitting around 4-5 years isn't a good thing for those components.

Congrats!!!
Id also recomend gettimg new rubbers. Aitting those years just deforms them and after 6 yrs they get old and not safe/reliable.

Change also the brake fluid!
