Sticky milky mess found under parked scoot
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:09:01 AM »
Hi all.

Things have been going well for almost a year, since an exhaust cam job.

But....

Yesturday I found a tan coloured milky sticky mess, with green drops in it(the colour of my coolant).
This was found  under the left front part of the engine while parked on the side stand.

I had noted that the scoot was idling a bit rougher than before for a few days, and starting required a few turns of the key.
THE MAIN QUESTION : So, what do you think is the damage?

Since it does look like I will need some mechanical work, I will also get a high oil consumption problem sorted at the same time. I change my oil and filter every 3000km,and need an extra 1L for topups between changes.

MJR, I just stripped the plastic, and saw that the sticky mess is directly under the water expansion tank outlet.
I opened the tank rubber plug, and found the same colour liquid in there. But looking from the outside the tank is green, so it always looked good, full and green. No other leaks apart from the standard one where the wires come out the top of the engine for the alternator. On the other side if the engine (rhs).

Oil getting in the coolant and probably coolant getting in the oil like MJR suggested. Head gasket most likely, water pump seal second. Yow!

Mixing of oil/coolant is bad and if it gets into the engine can wash bearings causing wear/damage. You need to check the engine oil also. As Karl said possible water pump or engine head gasket.

The oil is black, no contamination there. In any event, I have had my scoot trailered to the workshop for a quote, as I need my ride to do my job. I hope it is only the gasket.

Update:head gasket. The head is at the engineer's for skimming. Probably i will get new rings fitted since it is open.

Finally! I got the scoot back and taking it gently. Got to wear-in the engine. It has been in the workshop for so long, I almost forgot I own a scooter.... 😀
