Title: MXU review
Post by: 400racer on December 19, 2007, 10:58:02 PM
Well I finally got it put together and running today.  I moved the Handlebars closer to me than factory settings and I also went ahead and striped the racks.  Its about 30 degrees here in North Carolina so I didn't ride maybe an hour or so. :'( The power is real strong, it just has a slight low end bog about it. It handles fairly well but the turning radius is sad. Do they all do this or what? I really like the seat and the lights as well. I have a pipe on the way and I am going to pop out 2 rollers of the clutch and the low end bog should go away.  But so far I am very happy and with a couple of mods I will be on my way to a 2008 lites class championship. :o ;D

Allright.....been waiting on your review.
Yes, you reported everything just like I thought....

Power is strong, except there is this low end bog. Removing the two roller weights does wonders here as well as just getting through the break in period and looseing up the motor some. I run 26" XTR's and I can spin them now....before I could bog it down with my 25" stockers.

The pipe will wake it up as well....what pipe is it?

The handling is ok, but the a-arm improvements that 500Racer2 and Dan (he rode the Mongoose last year) are working on will eventually make it to stock units and that will drastically improve the front end. Make sure your toe in is set right...that adjustment helped me a lot!

Please keep us informed on what you think and what mods and all you do.....it helps us regular guys out alot :)

First of all, why does the newest member of the team have quads and last years riders don't??  Second of all, taking the rollers out will not remove the low end bog completely, it is the fact that the machine weighs 700 lbs. and there is nothing to strip when it is race ready, and third of all, 2008 class championship over my hairy @$$!
Waa, Waa, Waa, its 30 dgrees here in NC, suck it up, its 8 degrees in Ohio.
Bring it, Newbie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea as soon as the AC pipe gets here I am taking off the airbox lid and throwing in a K&N along with the clutch mod. That should wake it up nicely.  I am just wanting to get that GT thunder front end on there and that should take care of my little problem. I have a set of GBC dirt tamers going on it shortly. Stockers don't cut it.

Post by: MXU500_Red on December 20, 2007, 03:09:00 AM
I am surprised to see you guys running dirt tamers....aren't those like the Maxxis Bighorns? I figured those would be too heavy for you racing and you guys would go with something lighter. Don't get me wrong....I might get me a set for Summer riding (when it is bone dry and rocky....the XTR is not the best there I found out this year).

500Racer2.....you d man.....I am glad I am not out there racing against you....you'd have me all spooked :D
You guys are gonna be a hell of a team....four Kymco racers all on the line side by side going for the hole shot every race...look out.

You need to get the EPI clutch kit and put the white spring in the secondary, you will be amazed at the speed you will gain.
Title: Re: MXU review
Post by: 400racer on December 24, 2007, 01:27:37 PM
I beleive you ken. Well guys I made a mid pipe for the LTE muffler I had laying here and man that opened her up. I also put in a polaris 800 K&N air filter with 3 holes in the lid and an outerwear on the filter. The stock filter is a piece of crap.  I also took out 2 rollers in the clutch and that helped it out a bunch too. Now I need a white secondary and maybe the lowend bog with go away.  I wish I had some video of my exhaust because its so loud. ;D

Mxu_red are you close to durhamtown, because I need to make a trip down there one weekend.

Post by: MXU500_Red on December 24, 2007, 02:46:08 PM
So 4ooracer...
With the new pipe and K&N and the holes in the airbox....how responsive is the throttle at low end? When you rev' it up , is it real responsive or does it stumble at first?
Just curious because I can not run with a open air box lid...it stumbles real bad from idle to a throttle stab. WIth the airlid on, it is good.

Anyway...I am about 1.5 ours from Durhamtown. Also about 1.5 hours to BroadRiverATV park (Broadriveratv.com) , which is closer to you). I am thinking about making a trip myself real soon...When you wanna go?

Post by: 400racer on December 24, 2007, 03:29:11 PM
I left the lid because I don't want to risk water jumping into it. Its smooth right off the bottom all the way through. I am impressed with the power. I need to know how to stall this thing??? Let me do some checking on where I can go and when we can do it.

How tight are the trails at broad river? Are they tight?
Title: Re: MXU review

......
How tight are the trails at broad river? Are they tight?

Broad River ATV has a big variety. It has a 12 mile main loop and 100+ miles of trails off the loop. Most of the trails are not real tight, they are pretty wide and the turns are mild. They are mostly rough, mud hole type trails...good Utility ATV trails.
They have some real tight trails that were made when they cut some courses in for the woods racing series down here but thoses trails are not always open.
The good thing at Broad River is that all the trails are one-way.

Carolina Adventure World is a good place to ride with some tight trails, off camber, you name it.....you ever been there?

Nope, the only place I ride is Buffalo Valley and i81 motorsports park in Tennessee. We need to get together and go ride. The tighter the trails the better it is for me to practice on.

Post by: MXU500_Red on December 25, 2007, 03:35:07 AM
400 racer....you'd love riding the trails I have on my property. They are tight and full of roots and small stumps.
I try to race them (yeah.....sometimes I pretend I am a racer.lol) hard and do ride them pretty hard but with these stock handlebars ('07 bars are swept back too much) and these 26" XTR's.....the 500 is a handfull. I have to man handle it WAY too much to stay off a tree or make the next turn. I guess this is actually a good thing if I were training for a race. My son on his MXU150 can rip them up. I can do a good job on the 300 too.
A few years back I would invite you all to come ride here, but it has growed up around me so much lately (subdivisions everywhere) that I can't make as much racket as I use to.....somebody always complains eventually...

Sound like the 'Manager' has some good riding places....you going?

400racer...I'll take your stock bars (if they are the newer bend -08's) :). I have been waiting on the new ones to come in but months have past and they still have not arrived. I am trying to avoid going the riser/aftermarket bar route....want to keep it closer to stock if possible.

I know , not getting any love up here.  Raced my heart out last year and never gave up.  Helped Kevin build that Kymco Team but must have got lost in the shuffle.  Funny how the guys that help you get to the top are always forgotten.  Got to go to garage now and freeze (18 degrees), while I transfer my old quads to new frames.  That's OK Newbie, you don't have to help, just enjoy riding your brand new 500 around and also that brand new 400 that I will never get a chance on.  Guess thats the way it goes, the Team sees other talent and forgets all about the ones who help put them on the map.
Ken "No Love" Robey will be on my old chest protector this year.

I would appreciate it. Do you just have a pipe and filter? When its cold mine backfires quite a bit on decel but runs great WOT.  Do I need to rejet?  I got the white spring in and it did help out a lot on acceleration.
Title: Re: MXU review
Post by: MXU500_Red on January 05, 2008, 02:13:40 AM
Mine backfires on decelleration as well..I have not rejetted although 500Racer2 recommended going to a 148 main.

500racer2...love the pictures.....did you say there was a quad in the picture? All I saw was the flat bellies :P

Hey guys...how would the white spring be for a trail rider like myself? Since I am running a larger/ heavier tire I would think it would be ideal. Would you recommend it (going to white spring)?

Title: Re: MXU review
Post by: 400racer on January 05, 2008, 03:08:45 AM
The white spring is a good, cheap mod for you. I have a question to you mxu, why do you use 26inch xtrs?  Are you in that much mud? Robey tell more about rejetting... ???
Title: Re: MXU review

Excellent question about the tires .... When I first got my 500 it it was rainy season and all the places I rode were mud parks. I thought then that the 26" XTR's were ideal. But since then we have had a drought and most of the riding I do is not on mud anymore. I really would like to switch to a tire like the dirt tamers you are using ( I was looking at the bighorns already) . I just don't have the cash to go buying different tires at the moment.

Get some feedback from 500racer2 and the Manager on the jetting. They both actually have different opinions/experiences with jetting on the 500. One uses less and one recommends more.....I'd like to see what you come up with.

I tried that white spring at New York last year and for racing, it is not the choice.  For the woods, I think it would work great for you.  It grips the belt really well, gives you more low end because it takes longer for the secondary to open up.

I saw one fly by at the Pittsburgh Airport the other day too.  I use a Pro Armor on all my quads.  But, remember, just because you are using the equipment that I tell you to use, that in no way will make you even close to being as fast as I am.   Yes, that just happened!!  Shake & Bake!!!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: MXU review
Post by: 400racer on January 06, 2008, 01:18:28 PM
Pro armor is what I thought you said but i wasn't sure.  The only thing that will be shaken is you after your quad gets through bakin'. LOL :D

Post by: MXU500_Red on January 09, 2008, 05:31:29 PM
400racer....have you got a chance to change the jetting yet?

I got a guy ordering a few jets (diiferent sizes) and we are going to experiment on mine .... maybe next week. I will try the 148 first and go from there.

I want to get the white seondary spring in as well. Now I put the stiffer spring in my MXU300 and I like it on tight fast trails but don't like how it is on the open straight runs. It seems like it needs to shift to a higher gear but never does.
That is my only fear with going with the white spring on the 500....is is going to do the same...
Title: Re: MXU review
Post by: 400racer on January 09, 2008, 06:57:07 PM
I am getting the 148 put in tomorrow. As for the spring, I like it a lot. No matter what, the 500 will top out at 61 and the white spring will help you acceleration a bunch.

Rookie...sounds like you'll have more Kymco blue marks on you than stripes from all the other competition....
I seen 500racer and 500racer2 share paint on the start at Yadkinsville....now 4 of you.....how many piles ups we gonna see at the holeshot line..lol

Did Kevin also tell you that YOU as a ROOKIE get to wash of all quads after each race.  Hope you have a pressure washer and a 100 gallon water tank for the back of your truck.  Sorry , but this is what ROOKIES do to earn their stripes>
What is the deal with these shocks, can't get ahold of Kevin for some reason today, I just got home from a hockey game and I have a set of new ___ shocks on my front porch.  The packing list has Jordan crossed out, Kevin crossed out, and my name wrote in.  Is this supposed to be a surprise.  If so I appreciate it.  Wasn't going to be able to get these for at least another month.  Money is tight. Who do I owe the money too.  I hope you have me on a payment plan.  They are really great looking shocks.  Going to bolt them on later today and see how they work.  That is racer respect, giving these to me before you guys get them.   Thanks you two, you really made my day!!!!

400racer....looks good.
I see you got the new wheels and shocks on.

Did you ever get the jetting done?
That was a race you were in?....How did it go? How is the 500 running?

The front shocks, wheels and tires are managers just for temporary testing. I left the jetting alone also.  The race didn't turn out well, fouled a plug and didn't even make a lap.  It looked good though.

Wonder what caused you to foul the plug?

Excessive choking.

Excessive choking.

Yeah...that would do it. I think the 500's run real rich already in the idle range. I got  a guy tweeking on my 500 as we speak. We have the 148 main on order but I think it is the primary is where mine needs a slight adjustment and where I will see more improvement.
Even with K&N filter and AC Racing pipe....you can see exhaust rich fuel smoke when I first gun the throttle. I think the primary is rich. Going to the 148 main will help the top end now I would think, but I think maybe tweeking the primary will help my throttle crispness and response.

What do others think?

I think the 148 is gonna kill it. It has a 128 in it right now and it is rich so you put in the 148 and bam. I would drop it a couple of sizes. There is no primary Jet. There is the main and pilot and a few others like the choke jet.

Yeah...I was meaning "pilot" when I was saying primary (thinking CVT I guess).
I meant that the pilot is real rich but the Main is the one that everyone has talked about changing after piping and K&N filter.
I am thinking the pilot jetting or needle valve is what needs to change to lean it up some on the low end....the 148 main would only show up at wide open throttle. I don't know if mine is lean or rich at wide open thottle.................ok...my eyes have crossed ;D

Inside your airbox there is like stop plate for the stock filter. I broke it out and installed a polaris 800 K&N filter. Works great for me.
