Technical | How To / Re: Super 8 Headlight bulbs

 :o :o :o :o
That's what I feared. I saw a youtube video of some fellow doing some work on his headlights and I was staggered to see all the bodywork having to come off!

I did replace the light control module. So this dims them at idle then do they brighten as you increase the revs, mine doesn't ehty just stay off. :( ::)

For the lights you can consider LED bulbs. They are available with the same connectors as a standard bulb, are brighter, last longer, resist vibration and drain less juice.

Performance parts? Your bike has been designed to produce a certain amount of power. Don't waste money on trying to improve that. It won't be worth it. Save the cash and buy a more powerful scoot if you want more power  ;)

I'm keen to try the solution offered by Aatos but can't quite work out what he means...can anyone clarify? Cheers!

Why would you want the headlight and the position light on at the same time?

How on earth do you remove the headlights on a Super 8? I've been looking and it seems all the panels need to come off? Please tell me this isn't the case!  :o

I have the Haynes Book of Lies but it's just not clear.

There's a weird issue with my scoot. The main headlight will come on for about a second and then goes out so I'm trying to figure out what the issue is. I have replaced the light resistor for a new one. I'm now trying to eliminate the simple stuff from my enquiries. Fuses appear to be ok (except I appear to have a domestic looking 13A one fitted which is weird, anyone know what rating the fuses should be?)

and then I thought I'd check the bulbs but it appears I need to dismantle the front of the bike  :o

After the bulbs I was planning on checking the switchgear.

Any other ideas will be very welcomed...

I wouldn't be too concerned about the three stars. SHARP only test helmets that have attained ECER2205 standard so even a 1* is considered suitable for road use, it's just that some are safer than others.

I've also bought a 3* rated helmet for daily and work use (I'm a motorcycle instructor), and that was also sub £100. I spend most of my time chasing after trainees on 125s round town at speeds generally not exceeding 40mph (50mph on a good day!) so a 3* is perfectly adequate. For touring though I'll use my trusty Caberg  8)

+1 !
You might even be pushing it at 7 years IMO.  I don’t think I have any helmets in use now over 4 years old.

Yeah I don't think I've ever kept one for seven years but for a high quality unit it's achievable. From this year ECER2205 safety standard is being raised to ECER2206 to get the certification closer to SHARP's findings.

For you guys around the world, it's worth having a look at the SHARP website for helmet safety stuff and to see their helmet safety test results. Its a useful resource, no matter where you live: https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/

ACF 50 isn't a polish or wax. It's a corrosion preventer on metals.

I get ya, never heard of it. I've used Hammerite for that kind of thing...

So a few weeks ago I bought a Super 8 125 for the missus. It seems a pretty rare machine. I've only ever seen one other. It has an aftermarket can fitted which does make a pleasing rumble. Teenagers in particular seem very impressed, it amuses the missus  ;D I paid £265 and am pretty pleased. Rides really well.

It does have some issues. The ignition barrel had been damaged in a previous attempt at theft. I managed to obtain a part from a supplier in Italy and have replaced it.

Has an issue with the lights. Reading around the subject it seems it may be down to the light control relay. They seem quite pricey, does anyone know a good place to obtain one from?

Here's a pic  8)

Flickr doesn't seem to have a IMG code  ::) so let's see if this works...

I've been using Demon Shine with a microfiber mit and a microfiber cloth for a final polish, works superb.

Don't tell on me - My Arai helmet is over 30 years old and I've rebuilt it many times over.  So far it's survived two crashes and saved me from a fate worse than death.  I'm kind of fond of it after all we've been through. We're like brothers.

Whilst Arai are superb, tell me you're not still using that lid after 30 years and several impacts. A helmet is a one incident item. The polystyrene used in them degrades over time. 5-7 years of daily use is the current guidelines for a helmet, even for a modern Arai. Seriously, if you are attached to it hang it on the wall or put it in a display case but not on your head when riding, it's a death trap.

Sorry guys for d=the delay in responding. I've had so much work on recently I've not really had the time to anything with the bike. I should have explained further. Yeah, the ignition barrel is the bit where the key goes in. It was damaged by some oyk who tried to steal it and is in the "ON" position permanently. The previous owner was running the scoot and to switch it off would simply pull the connector out of the CDI.

I have since sourced an ignition barrel (lock) set from a supplier in Italy although because of covid it is taking a real long time to arrive. Once I've replaced that I can start investigating the electrical gremlins.

The main trouble appears to be with the lights. I've read that the Light Control Module is rubbish and some people simply by-pass it. I don't know at this stage whether the problem with the lights is the LCM or the switchgear. I'm guessing the former so I'll either buy a new one ore by-pass it like some owners do.

The bike rides really well. the engine is great and pulls strongly from standstill up to about 60 mph (with me on board. With the missus on board it may even nudge 70!).

I rode it to work the other day and it did something really weird, it started bucking in time with the indicators (blinkers). Once I switched off the indicators the bike ran smoothly again. I suspect the previous owner did quite a lot of buggering around with the internal organs but my guess is that the LCM is shagged.

Any hints/tips will be greatly appreciated, thank you. It seems to me that the Super 8 125 is quite rare. It doesn't even have it's own section on this forum!  This is my first foray into Kymco and, apart from the gremlins, what a cracking little scoot. I will post a pic as soon as I can. Thanks again!   :)
