New Member - North of Boston - 2009 People 50 2-stroke
« on: January 09, 2023, 06:48:29 PM »
Hi, it's Alan F. from North of Boston, MA. I just picked up a 2009 People 50 2-stroke with 5300 kilometers? on the odometer. It runs ok but could be better, needs tires for sure and only has one mirror. I'm putting together an eBay list now. Is there a better place to buy parts for this?

This is my 2nd scooter, I had a new Honda Spree in 1986 that was loads of fun, and I've had several Honda motorcycles and currently a Royal Enfield Interceptor. I've got tools and skills but this is a bit of a different world, thanks for having me here.

Welcome Alan!

I have found the several Kymcos I've owned to be well built and reliable. I use ebay, too, and have had good luck with generic parts but I had a Chinese made CVT belt fail at 1000 miles. I'm currently using a Gates belt on my Grandvista 250, so far so good. For Kymco parts I use Leeson's.

There are some very knowledgeable and helpful scooterists on this forum so don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Small world Stig!

I just received my air filter yesterday, last part on my list of orders so im out of excuses and it's time to get to work on this thing before my Daughter starts asking where the thing is.

I've changed out the spark plug as specified in the manual, gapped to 0.625mm and cranked it in just right, plenty of oil around to lube that crush gasket. Then I took off the airbox cover and started cleaning up the oily mess. Air filter and spark plug were obvious original parts. I'll have to get a good look at the manual but as I was wiping down the engine cover beneath the airbox, there is a square port at the bottom rear big enough to stick a finger up into. I'm guessing that's the drive belt case, and my finger was tickling belt shreds and not an old hornet's nest.

Where do I want to order a belt for this machine?
Leesons sounds like a good start but I think a Gates belt would probably last longer. A former career was servicing printers and print processing equipment, I never replaced a Gates brand belt twice.

Looking for Lessons now, are they in West Virginia?

None better than an original Kymco belt!
AND, it is the proper fit for your Kymco scooter.
If there were better belts, we'd tell you.

Ok, belt is ordered, will I need a gasket for this left side cover or is it reusable, maybe silicone?

I've got tires to change and fork oil to change while I'm waiting for the belt.

Regarding the belt cover gasket....
If it survived the opening.....reuse.  if not,  buy a new. If not.....don't use one and don't ride underwater.
imho.

Sounds good, thank you.

30wt oil for the air filter per the manual.
But what about fork oil? I'm a fan of ATF for forks, are there any known fork dampened mods or does stock work well at 29mph?
I've got new front break pads and DOT4 fluid planned.
Otherwise there's one dashboard bulb blown, left turn signal I think, hoping to find that bulb locally.

Oh crap, I just found a Piaggio LT50 with 800 miles for $400. Might have to pick that one up too.

2002 Piaggio Scooter for sale. Does not run. Missing key. Don’t know what else it needs. Selling as is. $400

Does that read 807.9 or 8079? Miles or KM?

From some quick research it looks like wheelbase is 1-3/8" longer than the People50 so maybe more foot room. Otherwise it's very similar.

I just emailed the seller. Maybe I'll hear back, it's only been listed 4 days.

The Piaggio seller emailed back asking for $250 but won't send the vin# so I can verify its not stolen. Too bad.

And the seller just called, he'll send the photo shortly. I'll look the Vin# up on: https://www.nicb.org/vincheck to determine if it's something I want to get involved with.

Vin comes up clean, not stolen or salvage, $250 with a bill of sale, no keys or papers, doesn't run.

Might give www.cyclepedia.com a look. They have lots of Kymco manuals.
I use their manual for my LIKE200i - I like it - some don't like them.

and there are lots of freebees floating on the web....if you have stout virus protection :)
