General Discussion / 50cc hard to start an hour after ridden
« on: May 01, 2021, 01:40:26 PM »
I've had a (2016) Super 8 50R (Agility 50 engine) since it was new.  Now about 3400 miles on it now.  It has been tuned up recently (new plugs, valve adjustment, new air filter, oil/gear oil change, new battery).  Ever since new it starts immediately or will start immediately if I turn it off and turn it back on... also idling perfectly.   But if I've ridden the scooter and park it for a 1/2 hour or hour, then try to restart I have to give it throttle and then continue to give it a bit of throttle for 10-15 seconds to then have the bike idle properly else it will stall/not start.  Once I get it going it runs perfect.  This issue has existed since new.

Is this just one of those temperamental 50cc carb things or is this an obvious sign of a faulty device (petcock valve? mixture screw?).  I did drill the hole in the gas cap to see if this was causing a vapor lock, but afterwards did not notice a difference/issue not resolved.

I'm fine living with it, but if a simple fix, I might as well fix it.

My son's 2015 Super 8 has been running great.  Starts with the first press in the morning.  However after the engine gets hot on a short ride and then trying to restart it within an hour or two it can take 2 or as many as 6 or 7 presses to get it going... but it always gets going.  Once running, no other issues.  This has been an ongoing issue.  The work-around is to give it a little throttle when starting it and hold the throttle slightly open for 10-15 seconds and then the motor will keep going.  When idling, the rear wheel, like when brand new (a 1/2 year ago) rotates slightly.

What is the correct fix?  I'm guessing it is something simple (slight screw turn somewhere?).

There are videos about derestricting an Agility CDI by sawing into a corner until cutting through a copper wire... but the videos out there are a few years old.  Since the 2015 and newer US Super 8's are based on the Agility platform is the derestriction process the same?  Right now we can get about 28 mph on the scooter (has ~150 miles on it) and really would like to get it to 35 mph as that is the top speed limit in our town.  According to some of these videos simply sawing, thus derestricting, the CDI alone will drive a 5-10 mph bump.  Is this true?  Is this the right process?  If it works is there any potential downside to scooter durability/longevity?  Since the warranty is still 1 1/2 years if I go this route might it make sense to buy a Kymco CDI and try it on that in the event it doesn't work or the scooter ever needs warranty work I can swap it for the original?

Anyone else actually done this with success?  What was the result?

I'm averse to actually swapping out mechanical parts because I'm comfortable the Kymco engineers actually new what they were doing optimizing performance and durability with the mechanical parts.  I'm not obsessed with the ultimate 50cc top speed... just looking for about 7mph more to keep up with traffic.  Is this the solution?

General Discussion / Should I buy a new battery or take it to the shop?
« on: February 23, 2017, 08:05:54 PM »
About 2 months ago I bought a Kymco Super 8 R50 for my son.  For it supposedly being durable this one has been quite temperamental.  For one, if it is below 40F we really need it to warm up for well over 5 minutes or it has stalling issues while driving (within a few hundred yards of driving).  Also, we have experienced when trying to restart the scoot when the engine is warm it has difficulty restarting sometimes.  Most recently my son hit a bit of a bump pulling into a parking lot and the scooter died... there is power to the dash and headlight but there is not a peep to the starter and cannot kick-start it, both at the time of the incident and we just tried it again today with no luck.  This happened while I was traveling a couple days ago, so the bike is still parked in that parking lot.  I'm now home and my wife is telling me I need to walk this bike home a mile since my son has already had to do a similar walk of shame twice before.  She is really mad I bought a Kymco and wonders why I did not buy a Yamaha or Honda.  The dealership is over a half hour away.  I actually just order a motorcycle carrier today for my wife's Grand Cherokee, assuming at some point I'll have to take this thing in.

When I walk it home tonight I'll put it back on the trickle charger to see if that does anything... I checked the battery cables and fuses and they seem in order.  I'm thinking a new battery probably won't do much.  My wife wants me to just "give it back" but I doubt the dealership will comply... the Super 8 now has 28 miles on it.  I did a ton of research and really thought I was making the right choice.  This has been a really unpleasant experience.  Any suggestions before I take it in?  If the darn thing would only ride my son would be loving it.

Agility 50 / Detrimental performance upgrades
« on: December 20, 2016, 05:30:33 AM »
I'm getting a new old stock 2015 Super 8 Wednesday which is based on the Agility platform (which is why I'm posting here).  I get that a CDI caps top speed to address various moped laws... But why are there 3 or 4 other physical "upgrades" to improve performance?  Said another way, will making carb and air intake adjustments to get more power damage durability long term?  There must be a reason Kymco has physical limiters beyond the CDI?  Curious if anyone knows the back story.

My experience with many OEM designs are the engineers at the factory usually do things for a reason.

General Discussion / How many miles 50cc scooter tires last?
« on: November 23, 2016, 12:54:43 AM »
Like the title says, how many miles will a new scooter's tires last, on average?  I'll be getting the Super 8 50R racing tires.

Super 8 / New Super 8 50R on order
« on: November 18, 2016, 08:16:48 PM »
I'm getting my 15 year old high school freshman a Super 8 50R for Christmas.  Just finalizing the deal with a dealership... unfortunately the closest [responsive] Kymco dealership is almost 40 miles away.  But for a very nominal price they will deliver.  Many of my son's friends have scooters and use them to get themselves around town and to various sports practices.  My son is very active with such school activities and it seems we're carting him around to 2-3 different activities every night.  I prefer him to have his own scooter rather than riding on the back of someone else's.  This is a a fairly large town but very flat and not a speed limit over 35 mph, so I figure this should work well.  My hidden agenda is my wife has been suggesting I give my son my Jeep when he turns 16 so she doesn't have to cart him around... but I really don't want to give up my Jeep, so this is a <$2K compromise that I think works for all and hopefully can address his basic transport needs into college.  After several weeks of research I finally landed on Kymco vs. spending a grand more for a Yamaha or Honda of similar styling (vs. Retro, which is not my son's style).  i imagine I'll be taking it out on occasion as well.

I have a bit of experience with vehicle maintenance so intend to be diligent with various fluid & filter changes.  I'm really hoping we don't get a dog so it won't need to go to a shop but once every few years.  Even the closest motorcycle repair place is quite a few miles away and driving there on the scooter would not be feasible.  It sounds like the new Super 8 design is just based on the Agility platform, which has stellar reviews, and now that Kymco has compressed prices of the Super 8 within $100 of the Agility I figure the premium for a bit more style is worth it.
