issue with top speed and accelerating
« on: September 25, 2010, 06:12:32 AM »
I have had a growing issue with my scoot not getting above 55/60 tops, but occasionally it will "kick up" and go full speed. there is also an issue with slow acceleration. seems like it is not getting into low or high "gear". i have checked the clutch, the rollers are new. any ideas? scoot is a 2006 people 250, 15000k

There are a number of small parts inside the variator that are often neglected and have to be up to specs.
Pls take a look at service manual, disassemble everything and check the indicated dimensions.
Could be pretty much anything.

Before that, is the carb OK and is the spark plug OK?

I had a similar issue and found the drive pulley collar was dirty with what appeared to be oil/lube.  I took the variator apart and cleaned it with brake cleaner (but you could use other things). and put it back together.  The collar is the fourth part in counting from the nut on the right.

Did you replace the roller with sliders or new rollers?

new rollers, the carb is clean and the spark plug is new. And I have cleaned every part of the variator and clutch with brake cleaner. can a belt stretch and cause this?

A belt could stretch.  When mine did, i could smell it when it got warm and it squealed. I did not notice a decrease in top speed performance but if could happen.

Is it the original belt? --16,000 km on a belt...it's dead...

I have decided to get a new belt and see if that solves it, if not I will at least know its something else.

If nothing else you know you will not get stuck in the center divide of the freeway like I did with 12,000 km on a belt. 16,000 km is pushing the service limit pretty hard.

So, I replaced the belt, cleaned all the parts, got new tires, changed spark plug and filter, cleaned the carb and checked everything I could think of.... no improvement in the speed. Doesn't "shift" to accelerate or get into top "gear". What else could it be?

I would check CDI and pulse coil at this point.

I have in my hands Dayco 8202K.

Look up "8202K" in http://www.dayco.com.au/databank/documents/Scooter-belt-catalogue-Dec-09.pdf

The dimensions for 250S are 24x11,5x996.

The nearest place that could work on my scoot is in Kansas City, about 100 miles away. It would be about 2.5 hours on the interstate highway at 45 -50 mph to get there with with this problem. Might be worth it though, REALLY miss riding. Making me hate my car.
