OK found 3 head bolts very loose tightened them put exhaust up fired right up smooth as silk.

Good troubleshooting.  I wouldn't have thought of the head bolts.

I checked the plug again and it looks a little rich definitely not lean.  I turned the low speed air screw one quarter turn more rich and now everything seems very good.

I pulled the variator off and replaced the stock 8.5 gram roller with 6 gram rollers and now it accelerates better out of intersections and slow speed corners and goes up the hills around my house anywhere from 2 to 5 mph faster.

I'm liking the scoot.  This fall I can budget for a better exhaust and then I'll be super liking it. Right now around town I regularly am riding at 42 -45 mph on the speedo, about 35-40 actual.  That's exactly what I need.

Don't know how you'd look at it under load at full throttle.

;D  Proud of myself for thinking of a test since the plug color/condition and riding results are giving mixed messages.

I covered about 20% of the intake snorkel with electrical tape.  I figured if the scoot was running lean, this would help it run a little better and if the scooter was running rich, this would make it run a lot worse.

It ran quite a bit better.  Picked up a couple of mile per hour even coming up small hills.  Did some long full throttle slightly uphill runs to make sure it was good an hot and it ran strong.

So that means it is running lean and maybe just cleaning the carb will fix it.  At worst, I'll have to buy a larger jet.

Was only hitting about 42 mph on the flat. WIth the tape on I was hitting 50 on a very slight downhill and 42 on a slight uphill.  THink I'll like the speed once it's jetted properly.

Then I can add a pipe and upgrade the variator.  8)

My 2007 People 2T is maroon with black plastic and chrome accents.  Its in beautiful condition. Looks almost new.  I bought it because I like the big wheels and the bike size fits my tall height. Plus Kymco builds reliable scooters and this one had only 600 miles.  Its really a pretty scooter, but I'd like it to look more tough.

Which just means I like the tough look of that black and red one.  I'm thinking about using black Plastidip to cover all my maroon.  With this idea, I might use red Plastidip for the wheels and other accents.  My mind is churning.

Anyone else here change the overall look of their Person?

I've run another tank of gas through it and it keeps running a bit better.  Adjusted the idle mixture and speed and that's helped low speed performance.

Still need to clean the carb but can tell the Seafoam is gradually helping.

Thought it was running better.  Yesterday on my commute home it died three times.  It was very hot out. The first time it died was after sitting idling in traffic for several minutes.  When I gave it gas it just stopped.  Had to choke it to get it restarted.

Second time was after coming up a hill for about a quarter mile I rolled up to a stop light and let off the gas and then back on as the light turned green and it died again.

Did the same thing one more time as I cruised through my neighborhood.  I would let off the gas as I went through an intersection and then when I throttled back up it died.

It was about 90 degrees out so it was hot.  It ran fine in the cool morning on the way to work.

I pulled the plug today and after less than 100 miles on it it has some carbon build up on it.  Half of it is pretty white and half of it has black on it.

Driving symptoms seem to be pointing to rich running.  Just haven't had time to open the carb up yet and see what I've got.  Going to have to stop driving it until I get it fixed.  Unsafe to have it die when I'm going through an intersection.

You can get a manual choke delivered for under $20 and would be a lot easier than putting a bag around the air cleaner to start it.  I really don't like the automatic choke on my People.   Never realized that the hard starting was caused by the auto petcock.  I may put a fuel cut off valve and fuel filter on and bypass that.

Just have to remember to turn it off when I shut the bike off.

Not true!! The Kymco zx50 is the only one that uses the af16 clone engine!!! The others are horizontal not vertical, and share 0 parts with the af16 "DIO".

Did some more research and you are right.  It is amazing though how many sites list it as that Honda clone.

I put a new spark plug in it and it helped it run just a tiny bit better.  Did the plug chop exercise and the plug is absolutely white. It's pretty lean.  Will take the carb apart and clean it and try again.  If that doesn't work, I'll get a bigger jet.

Funny, I live in Denver and would have expected it to be rich if anything, but the symptoms pointed to lean.

Where is a good place to buy a jet kit from?  I'm going to put a Tecnigas pipe on it pretty soon so I might as well buy a kit.  How big will I need to go above the 82?

The s filter is actually built onto the petcock, on top of it is a little mesh screen. Pretty good design and unless your bike has seen really nasty gas it should be aok.

Checked the filter in the petcock. It was fine, nothing in it and fuel is flowing strong into the carb.

I also checked the spark plug to see if it was fouled and for rich/lean condition.  It's a pretty good tan/brown. Could be slightly rich.

So I guess I'll need to take the carb off and clean it out. Probably just varnished up a little.  More to come.

Discovered today that it runs fine with a full tank of gas and was not with an almost empty tank.  Leads me to believe the fuel filter is clogged.  I'm going to take the filter out and see what it looks like next time my tank is low.

People 50 / Variator belt age
« on: July 12, 2015, 06:14:08 PM »
Is it just the width of the belt that determines replacement or does age matter?  I just bought a 2007 People that only has 1000 miles on it, but it is 8 years old.

People 50 / Re: Carb Idle/Mixture procedure
« on: July 10, 2015, 09:00:49 PM »
I pulled this from another post:

Anyway... the proper way to set the idle mix is to turn the smaller screw (idle mixture screw) in either direction until you get the highest rpm you can. If it goes too high use the larger screw (idle speed screw) to compensate, and repeat this till you get the best "tune" you can.
Once you achieve this turn the idle mix screw 1/8 - 1/4 turn counter clockwise if the screw is closest to the engine (intake) side, or 1/8th - 1/4 turn clockwise if the screw is closer to the air box side of the carb.
What that does is Slightly enrich the idle to prevent a lean running condition.
This procedure is best done w/ a new or clean air filter/fuel filter/new spark plug.

As a base line setting these small carbs run at or near 2 turns out from seated. This is just a base line, and not etched in stone.
Give it a shot, and see how it does.
