Xciting 500 / Battery or Stator?
« on: November 26, 2016, 06:45:02 PM »
First off let me state that I'm not a mechanical guy.  So I'll do my best to describe the issue.

I have not ridden my bike in about 2 weeks do to illness.   I jump on and go about 5 to 10 miles up the road to the local market (she fires right up).  I'm in the store for under 10 minutes, and I got nothing.   Not even a click.  No dash lights, etc.

I end up jumping the bike and take a long ride home, riding about 40 miles without issue.   I get home and try to start the bike roughly an hour later.  Same issue as before.

After about an hour of having it on a trickle charger I try it and she has lights and all that for about 30 seconds...then nothing.  So we pull the battery and have a load test done.  It's low but holding a charge.

Right now she's on a trickle charger and that will take about 3 - 5 hours to fully charge.   My question is...Battery or something else.

I'm not sure how old that battery is but I'm thinking less than 2 years.

Have you put a voltmeter on the battery to see what the voltage is?

Don't have one but I'm thinking it's a bad ground.

I live in Florida and we have a lot of rain and humidity here.   I bring that up because I thought I just had a bad wire....now I don't know what the F word is going on.

My battery light came on and off intermittently over two days last week.  I replaced my battery back in Jan 2015, so it should not be an issue.  Then it went off and stayed off.  I chalked it up to a bad or loose wire.

Then the bike died on me Friday, it would not crank or turn over, but I had lights and a dashboard.

I finally get a chance to look at it today and at first I got nothing.   Then all the lights on the dashboard blink at me a few times.  I still got nothing.  They blink on and off again, then powers right up.

??????   The owners manual is no help and I can't find anything on the net.

Any clues?   I'm taking it out now to see how she runs and see if this continues.

Xciting 500 / Cold Weather Starting
« on: January 27, 2016, 12:41:19 PM »
Recently we have had a cold snap.  Temperatures that ranged anywhere from 0 C to about 15 C (32 to 59 F) and my bike would sputter and cough but not turn over at well.

This went on for about a week, then yesterday we got into the high teens and 20's (I live in Florida, USA) and she finally turned over.  I was off and running and experienced no issues at all on the bike.

Does anyone else have this issue?   The battery is less than a year old, the tank was about 1/2 full and she does need an oil change but I only have about 4800 KM on the oil.

Does anyone else have these issues?   Would a battery tender solve them or do you think it's another issue?

Frogg toggs. You can buy them online from cabellas or froggtoggsraingear.com. 100% water proof and lightweight.

That's what I have and can not recommend them enough!   ;D

Speaking of rain....it took me nearly two hours to get home the other night due to rain.  http://2smallerwheels.blogspot.com/2015/08/decisionsgood-and-bad.html

When should you consider getting new gear?

I'm not talking about gear for gear sake...but the time and place where your helmet, jacket, etc has just worn out.   With gloves it's easy to know.  Helmets and jackets...not so much.

General Discussion / Does riding change you?
« on: July 31, 2015, 11:41:59 AM »
I was reading a fellow bloggers interesting piece the other day on how riding has changed him.  Which got me thinking, has riding changed me?  To a certain extent I would say "yes."  I'm more observant now.

I'm more willing to take the back roads.  I'm more willing to go down a road I don't know.  I'm more willing to pull of the side of the road for a picture or just soak in the moment.

So...how does riding change you?  Here is the original blog post:  http://scooterinthesticks.com/2015/07/exploring-life/

And of course...my reaction to it.  http://2smallerwheels.blogspot.com/2015/07/riding-changes-you.html

Well done.   ;D

I'll never understand how people pay 30K for a freaking Harley and then only manage 3000 miles in a year.  If that.

I just shake my head and move on.  In Florida, you can carry a gun and to many idiots out there think they are cowboys (and cowgirls) to begin with.   Not worth me getting killed or injured over.

Thankfully in Florida we can ride year round so bikes are very common.

I was thinking about this earlier.   As long as it a consistent flashing there should be no issue.   It's only a brief flash that I can see it being a issue

I can't speak about the 400 but I love my 500cc xciting.  It will maintain 70 MPH (113 KPH) all day without red lining.  I used to ride a Suzuki Burgman before which had a 400cc engine in it and it would also be able to maintain highway speeds.

The Kymco compared to the Burgman is a sports bike.

I played with it somewhat this afternoon thinking it's the fuses.  In playing around with it I noticed one of the battery cables was rubbing against the plastic case the battery sits in.  It started right up with full power when that plastic piece was off....put it on, nothing.  So, I think I just may need a new battery cable...or a better way to hold the battery in place.

Ideas?

I have the headlight wired so it flashes during the day.  I try not to use it all the time for that reason.

Usually I'll use it if the sun is at my back or in a area where I know cars may pull out in front of me without much warning.  The best advice I can give you is look for other signs...are the wheels turned?  Are they moving or locked?  Is the cager on a phone and not paying attention?

Sometimes all you need between a "Mother!" and a "ouchie" is a quarter second.
