Super 9 / Super 9 Mot Failed! Need Advise. Head Bearings
« on: April 26, 2018, 10:59:14 AM »
Hi
My sons Super 9 was attempted to be stolen in December this year, and the lovely pleasant people who decided they want the bike for themselves broke the handle bars, which I had to replace. Now I took it in for its MOT today and it failed on the following

1. Steering Headbearing has Excessive Free Play
2. Steering Movement excessively rough with the weight on the lower bearing
3. Steering Movement excessively rough with the wheel raised

I am ok with general DIY mechanics, but would this be a big job? Any advise would be appreciated

thanks

All done and working like a dream! Thanks for all you help! That saved me having to buy a new barrel!
Thanks again guys

Let's see if I get the photo attached.   In my photo, wires are arranged as follows:

                                                    Red @ 10 o'clock
                                                    Black w/white stripe @ 12 o'clock
                                                    Black @3:00 o'clock
                                                    Green @ 5 o'clock
                                                    Green @ 6 o'clock

Let me know if this corresponds to your switch wires.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, they have five, you can see them in the picture, also you can see near the barrell where it is connected to the frame, (two silver caps) that is where it is connected to the frame and the bolts that would need to be drilled out, so a diagram or picture would be welcomed thanks ;D

Can anyone help?
My sons super 9 was attempted to be stolen over weekend! They have damaged a few things, but one thing I am struggling with is they cut the wires at the back of the ignition barrel! And I don’t want to replace the whole barrel, one main reason is that I can’t get the bolts off, so was wondering if anyone knows what wires go to what at the back of the barrel ?? I have traveled through wiring diagrams and it only shows the wires not the back of the barrel ! I have attached a picture so you can see what I am up against !!
Thanks

I had a look! They had broken the shaft near the bolt. The handle bars was pretty rusty, so that didn’t help! Just got to try and get some replacement bars now!!

Super 9 / Steering issue after attempted theft!
« on: December 09, 2017, 08:11:39 PM »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could possibly help. Someone tried to steal my sons 50cc . They have broken the steering lock, which isn’t an issue, but now when you turn to steer the wheels don’t move with the handle bars at the same time. For example if I turn the handle bars at say 90 degrees to the left the wheel will move about 30 degree. The question I am wondering is the handle bars to the front wheel one complete price or two? And was wondering if it would be an easy job to fix?
Thanks

Looking back at my reply it looked kind of "smart alleccy" of me Butch. My apologies. There is no such thing as a dumb question. We are all learning here. Best of luck on your scooter. Please let us know if you get it sorted out.

The kick starter bypasses the starter motor. Instead of an electric motor to turn the engine to get it started, the kick starter uses your foot. The electric motor may be bad. Evidently your foot is not.  ???

ok thanks! I wasnt sure so i thought id ask

Butch, you can do a quick and simple test of the starter motor with out removing it.  Just locate the heavy red wire connected to your starter motor. Clip a red wire jumper clamp to the post you located, making sure the clamp touches nothing else. Then hook red to + and the black to-- on the other end of your jumper cables to any 12 volt good battery. Now go back to the bike and find an unpainted metal piece in the frame, ie: a nut or bolt and touch the remaining black wire clamp to it. Touch it hard and hold it. There will be a spark, so no fuel or fuel soaked rags near by. If the starter motor is good, it will spin. If it doesn't, then it's no good.
Ok this maybe a dump question but ! It does start on the kick start! So surely the starter motor must work? But I was thinking perhaps it may be too old and abit stiff for the battery to turn it over?

Hope it works Butch!
Nope it didn't work! So I'm going to replace the relay, then if that don't work I'm going to replace the start motor! It that fails then a can of fuel and a match may do the trick  ;D

do you know how to access the relay?, probably have  to remove some plastic panels, a pain, battery probably much easier to check, eliminate as the problem.  I have two 2003 Super 9's, and had one 2004 (sold), all needed batteries, but otherwise all the electric components work, except tach on one 2003 Super 9.  Sometimes, the switches, connections will act up if not used for a long time, have to disconnect/ reconnect wires to clear up connections, etc.  Cheers
I had the battery tested and it's poorly! So I have ordered a new one, I did find the relay and gave it a clean up! Fingers crossed it works

Have you removed the starter to see if looks OK, has free movement, maybe ground not making good connection?  Good Luck :-)
I have just taken the battery to get tested! The mechanic thinks the battery or relay could be the issue. Do I think I may see what happens with the battery and possibly a new relay before I look at the starter motor

I'm not familiar with the Super 9.  Does it have a kick start?  I would pull the battery, take it to a parts store and have it load tested.  Starter motor turning over a motor is more battery load than lights.
Yes it does have a kick start, and starts perfectly on that. But the electric start just clicks.

I think it's probably battery.  How old is battery?, how often is the scooter ridden to charge the battery?  You can get a new battery shipped to your door for approx $25, try BatteryShark.  Good luck, Cheers
I have no idea how old the battery is as we have only had the bike 3 months. It is ridden nearly everyday, but only short journeys, plus the fuel gauge does tend to be intermittent, especially on short journeys
