Roadcraft / Re: Are you, too, a born again rider?

I'm with the other 'born late' riders! Bought my first 2 wheeler last Fall at age 49...always wanted one....just never found the right time until recently. Eagerly awaiting the Spring thaw to start riding, again.

thanks..no dirt riding, here (at least not intentionally)! I was curious why I never seemed to read anything about anyone replacing shocks...must not be too much stress put on them by our scooters.

Stig - you're dead on..checking valve adjustment and new brake fluid is on my list before I start riding again in the Spring!  I'm going to assume neither of those has been done on my scoot.

Does anybody replace the front brake line as suggested in the maintenance schedule after 4 or 5 years?

General Discussion / shocks and forks..how to identify when bad?
« on: January 17, 2016, 05:06:47 PM »
since it's about 5 below zero outside now...just wondering....I'm familiar with knowing when car shocks and struts are getting weak, leaking, etc....but what about scooter shocks and front forks?

I don't seem to read much about anyone replacing worn shocks or redoing the front forks..are there any signs to look for to tell when it's time to replace? My scoot (2010 People S200) has just under 2000 miles...so I'm assuming I'm good for a while..but what tells you when it's time to replace?...and what kind of miles does this usually happen at?

thanks, and stay warm...

the rim tape looks great.. what color is that, white or silver?

Any problems with the install, or is it as straight forward as it looks?

Wayne, I've enjoyed reading your posts and watching some of your youtube vids. Like you, I recently picked up my first 2 wheeled motorized vehicle and love it. I remember you saying something (youtube vid?) about your coworkers saying you'd be trading up to a big bike, soon...love to hear why you decided to step up!

Tell us a little more about your new scoot.

thanks for the info, big blue! Glad to be on the forum and looking forward to learning a ton from everyone. I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions. It's going to be tough waiting for March / April until the weather warms up!

General Discussion / new to me 2010 People S 200!
« on: November 25, 2015, 05:37:39 PM »
Hey guys, I've been lurking here for about 2 months..since I picked up a black 2010 People S200 with 1800 miles. Love the site...great info, funny and entertaining....I think I'm up to about page 34 in the 'tech' section (and read every post in the People S200 forum).

A little background. I'm 49 and have never owned anything with 2 wheels and a motor, but have always wanted to. Back in 1980 (when I was 14) the big thing to have was a Honda Express or Yamahopper moped, remember those?...man, I wanted one so bad. The parents said no way, too dangerous. In the back of my mind I said some day...some day....

Well, school, wife, kids, etc, happened...until one day this summer when I started thinking about a scooter, again. I originally started off looking for a 2005'ish Zuma...but after reading up on scooters I decided on something bigger. When a local People S200 came up for sale I did a little research and bought it. It was pretty well maintained but dirty.

First thing I did was remove the plastics and clean the crap out of it. Once I got it all slicked up I changed the oil (T6), gear oil (RP 75W-90), which was overfilled, ruining the air filter, so that was replaced, too. New iridium NGK plug. Now it's clean and ready to go.

2 questions I have....I'm planning on adjusting the valves before Spring (1800 miles and not sure if it's ever been done). In my service manual it references both .10 mm and .12 mm for valve clearance...which one is it??

I also see reference to both DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid...I doubt it's ever been changed so I'll do that, too. Can someone tell me the correct one to use? While I'm very glad I have the service manual (from cyclepedia) it does have a lot of conflicting information (different valve clearances, brake fluid, tire pressures, etc).

I only put about 100 miles on the scooter this fall before the weather forced me to put it away for the winter, but I'm really looking forward to a lot of pleasure riding in 2016.

So hello to everyone on the board...Happy Thanksgiving....and can someone set me straight on valve clearances and brake fluid?

(tried to attach a pic but it's not showing up when I preview the post...)

thanks,
Steve
