Title: Leaking Air Box?....
Post by: Amaro321 on November 03, 2014, 03:01:44 PM
I have a concern guys, this is the second day I get home after my 25 mile commute and there is oil dropped along the side of the gear case and I checked my oil the first time was fine but this morning I checked it because I noticed some oil and there's a bit over 3/4ths of oil left 😕. Should I take her to the dealer?

Ok so I opened up the air box and it seems to be a gear oil line that is leaking into the box??? Does anyone know about this. And how can I check the gear oil level

Yeah I was going to say that but you beat me to the punch. There is no way to "check" final drive oil. The manual will say "look in the fill hole blah blah blah", but this is false!!!! If you are leaking out the breather, it is over-full. You will need a quart of 80w90 gear oil and a 60cc syringe commonly found at animal feed stores etc. or medical supply stores. Warm the bike up, remove the bottom 12mm drain bolt for the final drive and let it all drain out, spin your wheel slowly to get every last drop out. Fill up with 180cc of gear lube. Done.

So just empty and refill??... But how do I keep it from leaking?... I had changed it 300 miles ago I'm going to service it again soon

It won't leak if it has the correct amount in.

Ohh ok, so basically it shouldn't leak more than it needs right?

I just don't want to worry about the gear case running dry and potentially ruining it

No it only leaks when it's been over filed and excess pressure builds up. The correct amount, 180cc, won't force it out the airbox. If any got on your air filter you should replace that too.

I had that the first couple of times I changed the gear oil too. I put a small piece of foam sponge in the airbox, wedged under the air filter where the breather tube enters the box. That way, if it does blow a little gear lube in the air box, it is caught in the sponge and doesn't fowl the air filter, or spray all over the inside of the box.
Simple fix, and it's been working for 3700 miles so far.  :)
