General Discussion / damn petcock!
« on: March 18, 2024, 08:09:43 PM »
OK, now that the forum is back up and running I can vent...and I'm sure some here will relate. I tried starting my Nighthawk 650 last week...drained the battery trying to get it to start. Recharged battery and tried again later that day....same thing...battery drained, no start.

Recharged battery overnight. Tried again next day. No start. I thought it must be fuel related...so opened drain screws on float bowls..nothing coming out. Ah ha! must be petcock related! Removed (full) fuel tank...set on ground. Sucked on little vacuum hose going to petcock...no fuel came out..looked silly doing it, too... then thought, why don't I check the petcock in all positions?

Turned petcock to what I thought was 'off', sucked on vacuum hose and fuel came right out...Defective petcock? Nope...dumb me confused the 'on' and 'off' positions.  Aaarrrrggggghhhhh!

Reinstalled fuel tank, turned 'on' petcock, bike fired right up. Damn petcock.

Neil, some of us here know each other on other forums as well so if this one crashes we can still contact each other.  Several of us are on the Adventure Rider forum.  Crossbolt asked what happened to this forum there.  Several other people responded and one of them remembered that Stig was on the Modern Vespa Forum under a different name.  I joined that forum and contacted him to ask about this forum.

Just something to think about if this forum ever crashes again.  Those of us on ADV have the same user names there as on this forum.

yep, Stig is on Modern Vespa forum (old*****) and Klav and others on ADV. I actually checked both of those sites but for some reason I'm not registered on either of them.  I did a google search on 'Kymco forum is down' and was referred to an old thread on ADV from 2020 or 21 when the site was down.

yes, a little disconcerting to have the site down for days!

General Discussion / Re: craziest thing you've done on a bike?
« on: March 11, 2024, 03:02:19 PM »
wow, I hope to have some crazy stories at some point...but as a newer rider the 'craziest' thing I've done is drive to Chicago to buy an almost 40 year old motorcycle, that had not been ridden much in the last ? years...and proceeded to ride it 206 miles home on old tires with some dry rot, no front brakes, leaking front fork seals (everything was soaked up front), a marginally working clutch (clutch plates were frozen when I first got on bike..you'd think the seller would have ridden it a bit before offering up for sale).

The ride home took about 6 hours, with lots of stops. Luckily I had a buddy follow me in my van in case something went very wrong.

Oh, yeah, when I first hopped on and rode to the nearest gas station, the tires were severely underinflated (had 9 lbs in the rear?), oil was overfilled and there was clearly a bad oil leak somewhere underneath as the bottom frame was wet with oil.

Not the smartest thing I've done but very glad I did it.

I have always liked those scoots..I like the flat floor, step through design with a bigger motor.  They are not very common. I just did a facebook marketplace search within 500 miles of me (I'm in Iowa) and got nothing. I'd keep trying Facebook Marketplace, craigslist, cycle trader, etc. It is still March so maybe waiting a few months will see more used scoots hit the market. Good luck!

Klav, sunny and 70 is perfect! I may have seen this before...but did we know you owned a Vespa? A Like or People 150I comes to mind...but not a Vespa

that's too bad. After doing the conversion, those prices look very good and shipping is even reasonable.

I wasn't aware there were different sizes for GY6 starter clutch nut tools? Don't they all look like a big, 3 inch long impact socket?

here's an internal engine view of your drain plug..it sits at the low point of the motor.

I don’t even recall what Kymco recommends for an oil change interval?...I’m sure 1300 miles on that full synthetic is nothing. I like to see where you’re draining oil from, too. On my S200 (same motor minus fuel injection) I drained it many times just from the oil screen…only after I disassembled my motor did I see that the real drain plug drained much more oil. Just draining from the screen left quite a bit of oil behind.

Nothing like fresh oil in the scoot!

Get a DTX320 guys, the power of the headlamp is simply stunning!

A bike with a good headlight? I can’t even comprehend such a thing!  :D

Stig, I had that same headlight bulb on my S200...and the one time I recall riding in the dark I was outriding (overshooting?) my headlight at just 35 mph. It was very disconcerting riding on city streets where i couldn't see potholes or cracks until it was too late. It felt very unsafe.  Have you considered adding any supplemental / driving lights to your scoot? Not sure how much extra juice our little scoots put out but I'm sure it could power some additional led lighting.

Nice! How many miles and how much time since your last oil change?
