Downtown 300i Not Starting
« on: November 15, 2017, 11:17:33 PM »
My Downtown 300i will not start.  When I turn the key on all the lights work fine so I assume it is not the battery.  I DO NOT HEAR the noise that it usually makes priming the gas etc. though.  The starter makes no noise at all.

Thanks

Hey Julian. I would first check the battery. A bad battery will still have enough "juice" to run your lights but not enough to crank your scooter.

No worries Julian. Chances are that is all that is wrong, hopefully! Please let us know how it turns out and keep posting.

The fuel pump will not prime unless the kickstand us up. Move the stand up and down and try again. Also check the kill switch or start switch by giving it a good clean with contact cleaner. The brake light switch will also need to work to start the bike.

Turn on the headlights and leave them on for 10 sec. If the battrery is weak the the battery warning light will come on.

Do you hear a click when you press the start button? If not the start solenoid is not working. If you can hear a click then wiggle the cable to the starter motor.

Thanks for all of that...I am going to get out there in about an hour and check all of that.  I had just told my wife that afternoon that it acted funny twice the day before and an wouldn't start.  I told here I didn't know if I didn't have the brake handle in far enough or what and I jiggled it and turned the key off and on and it started.  So, I think it is something simple.

could be a bad brake switch. pull in each lever and make sure the rear brake light comes on. if not, there is your problem

I just came in and ready this last post... I just replaced the battery which it needed but I don't think was the real problem.  It won't crank with the left brake pulled in  only the right brake handle will crank it.  Does the brake handle need adjusting or is it something else.

Thanks for all of your help.

Left brake switch faulty. No adjustment. Ole two wheels had a similar problem with his DT300i and had to replace one of his switches. They are different switches with different part numbers! Most online parts diagrams do NOT make that distinction. Look up his posts or send him a PM and he will give you the straight skinny.

So it's definitely the left brake light switch. The easiest fix is to soak it with contact cleaner through a hole in the switch body then WD-40. Worked for me when my brake light was intermittent.

Julian43. I had a mess trying to get the correct brake light switch for my DT300i, until I called Kymco Parts Moster. The phone number is 888-987-6361. They know the difference between the left and right switch. They are NOT interchangeable I got a KYMCO OEM  switch, Part # 35350-KNBN-901.  The package says that part number and Kymco- SW RR STOP and the cost was $14.02 + shipping. You should call them and talk to Brian. He knows his stuff. Hope this helps.

I've had my left brake switch gone down on me.  The best is to replace it. It is a cheap part, eBay has plenty of them.

Left or right ones can be easily identified if you familiarise yourself of how they fit under the brake fluid reservoirs.

One Phillips head screw and off it comes, pull off the two blade connectors. Do that in reverse to install.

Easy Peasy.
