2018 700i won’t start
« on: December 04, 2022, 03:58:30 PM »
Our 700i side by side won’t start after running out of gas and refilling the tank. I never had an issue with this machine. It will fire and run for a second or two with a shot of starter fluid buts that it. Could the fuel pump have gone bad? I pulled it out and the filter at the bottom of it seamed to be clean so I don’t think it’s a filter issue. Will these side by sides not start if the oil level is low? Maybe coincidental if so? I can see oil when I remove the cap but there isn’t a dipstick on the cap. Am I missing something here also? What am I missing?

Maybe the fuel pump lost its prime from running till empty. I'd test it out of the machine in a small tub of gas being careful to keep the electrical contacts and battery far from the gasoline.  Be careful when working with fuel. I doubt that the oil has anything to do with this problem.

Is it fuel injected?  They are notorious for causing issues after running out of fuel.  If carbed, then check the pump as suggested.  I have the 450 model so cant help.

If your 2018 is the same as my 2019 they don't come with a dip stick. Has a sight glass on the driver's side. You have to remove the seat and center console to see it good. Don't know about the no start but please share when you figure it out. Just in case someone else has the same troubles!

Let me edit that. You can actually see it with just the driver's seat removed. Have to use a flashlight and look just under the fill cap.

So it turns out it blew the 15 amp fuse for the fuel pump. Replaced the fuse and it fired right up, however it didn’t run 100% and blew the fuse again. I replaced the fuse and it blew before it would start. Now I’m guessing I need to figure out if there is a short somewhere.

Might be better to check the fuel pump first to make sure it is not bad now. If you put 12v from another source, be sure to add an inline 15 amp fuse to see if the pump blows it too.

Does the pump turn on when the key is first turned, the 3-4 seconds that you hear it priming before you start the motor? If so, I would check for battery voltage at the wiring connector. Should be O/R and G colored wires. If you have battery voltage at the connector, make two jumper wires that can be hooked to a separate 12v battery. Be sure to fuse them properly and see if the pump runs like that. If it blows the fuse on the jumper wire the pump is most likely bad. Only other thing I can think of is maybe the injector is partially plugged if it passes all the test above.

I will add I would only try the test for the 3-4 seconds, or however long it normally primes with the key. Not sure if it is disconnected from the wiring harness the pump will get the signal to turn off at the end of priming. I imagine the ECU turns it off at the end of prime.

Last edit, after all these attempts to get your 700i to run have you full charged the battery. Reason I ask is some FI computer-controlled vehicles can be really funny about running if the voltage gets low. My thought is fuel pump has gone bad. But you really need to eliminate every other possible cause first. The fuel pump is not cheap.
