Super 8 150 / Big Bore Kit
« on: May 26, 2015, 07:12:33 PM »
I have a Super 8 150. Over the summer I was dealing with electrical goblins that kept blowing fuses and cutting out my lights. While I have done many things to my scoot, the problem lay in an untouched part of the system... Loose wire in the rear blinker (hate those intermittent problems). The not starting, hard starting, won't start problems were not just electrical though and my focus on electrical prevented me from checking mechanical. With the electrical all sorted, I checked my engine and found no oil and a point where it was seizing... The damage was done.

The simple fix, replace the scored cylinder, piston, crankshaft, bearings, gaskets etc... Basically, new top end... Of course I did some research and decided to make it more difficult and do a big bore kit. I had the engine machined out for a 180cc kit by Naraku, with a forged piston, new head and new cam (A8... Still using it for commuting, not racing). All the parts are Naraku.

One problem, already solved was the big bore kit by Naraku needs a shorter chain (also by Naraku). The other problem I am running into, it seems to be a smaller head from the original which prevents the rockers from working with the cam... The old head really isn't designed for the big bore kit so going back isn't an option. The entire top end of my engine is now Naraku but I am not seeing recommended rocker arms, springs or replacements.

Anyone else done this mod and figured out the rocker arms?

FYI: The tolerances for the 180cc are extremely tight with absolutely no way for anything larger to go in. The shop machining out my engine to fit called me three times bcz of how close they were and they weren't sure they could finish. Definitely not for amateurs. I only did it bcz replacing the parts with new Kymco parts vs racing parts by Naraku was a few hundred dollars difference and I was already paying for labor. If I was doing it myself (too many other projects at the moment), I would still be spending a lot, doing the work and getting the exact same bike (labor would have been the real savings)... I just don't have the skills yet to do the big bore kit myself. But since I was hiring it out... I figured I would use their expertise to do what I cannot.

Update: The Naraku rocker arms fit the head perfectly. With that fix, the engine now turns over again... on to new problems below.

Super 8 150 / Headlights
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:39:48 AM »
Ok, I recently got my alarm installed and working.  Finally put the bike back together and installed a brake transmitter (my wife's helmet has the receiver) and making sure everything was ok.. I had to reinstall a top case which had built in brake lights.  Everything was working electrically speaking... Then I tried to start it and the head lights just went out.  The bike also isn't starting... just turns over (and yes, the alarm is off).  It was starting before I put the plastic back on when I first checked all the electrical for the brakes and the alarm.

I am thinking its the CDI this time since it happened when I was trying to start the bike AND the bike won't start now.  Could it be the relay that dims the bulbs when trying to start? Would the relay affect starting if it went bad?

I blew a fuse when I put the top case on... it started just fine after putting the rack on (before I put the top case on) but when I put the top case on, the electrical button on the bottom were slightly rotated which blew a fuse.  I fixed the fuse, all the others were fine, and corrected the button and rechecked the electrical... Everything was fine. I got the plastic back on and situated the battery back in (I did have the floor pan out originally).  Checked the electrical again and everything worked... then I tried to start it... the headlights turned off, the engine only turned over and the headlights never came on again.  The fuses are good and all the other electrical is working.  Just at a loss as to where to poke around next...

Super 8 150 / Alarm install
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:00:19 AM »
Ok, first things first... I have no idea what I am doing... just figuring it out as I go.  I have been using a how to guide from http://www.instructables.com/id/Installing-a-SPY-5000-two-way-motorcycle-alarm-int/?ALLSTEPS for the Spy 5000m alarm which I purchased from aliexpress.com.

The install is rather easy.  I used the start switch in front of the bike and all my wires were accessible from that point.  I included a picture.  I could access the wires for the turn signals on the right side (of the pic, left side of the bike) and the start switch on the left (right side of bike).  I chose to cut the wires and put terminals on both ends so I could always reconnect if the alarm needed to be removed for whatever reason.  I also cut the wires after the wiring harness just in case I ever need to remove the start switch.

The alarm sort of works as it comes but there are modifications to be made to make the kill engine feature work.  The how to is in the guide.  I can testify the alarm will beep and make a lot of noise if set off but I was unable to get it to kill the engine or use the remote start feature because I haven't made the necessary modifications yet.

Does anyone have experience with alarms?  I am installing one because I will actually be putting things into the box on the back while at work and this alarm has a key fob to tell me when it is going off... and I can disarm the horn and rely on the key fob.

I am posting this just as an FYI for where to find the wires you need... Note, the remote start wire is not run to the front.  The alarm is meant for a motorcycle and has a lot of features but it is technical and the instructions focused on how to operate the alarm with the remote... the install instructions were just a wiring diagram of the alarm, not the bike.

Super 8 150 / Carburetor issues
« on: June 25, 2012, 09:32:21 AM »
Well, my scoot just crossed the 1k mark and started having carburetor issues.  The dealer fixed it, it is still under warranty, but 2nd day out on it and it died again.  It feels like the same problem (same response, symptoms etc...).  Apparently there is a rod in the carburetor that controls how much fuel goes in when on throttle.  Something keeps letting it move out of position so no fuel when throttle is applied.  The engine bogs down and stutters... this time I even got a little bit of back firing at full throttle.  The dealer said he added a spring to prevent it from coming out of position, which may the reason why I was able to limp it home at 10 mph.  Anyone else have this problem?  Anyone have ideas on how to prevent it? Any ideas on what caused it?  I intend to use that warranty while I still have it but at some point I will be doing this work myself... I may be doing this work in the middle of the night at some point if the cause doesn't find a solution...

Super 8 150 / Increasing the CC of the super 8 150
« on: April 13, 2012, 06:25:00 PM »
I have been coming across several upgrades for the GY6 motor.  A local scooter shop had a 200cc upgrade kit for my 150.  How effective are these kits?  I am assuming they are street legal but I was curious what else I would need to change.  I am assuming I would have to rejet the carbs, change the belt to Kevlar, likely a new pipe to reduce restrictions at the exit.  Do I need to change the weights or the variator too?  I haven't seen anything in the forum about increasing the CC for performance but I don't want to rely on the word of a salemen trying to sell me parts.

Super 8 150 / Which upgrades improve gas mileage?
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:54:52 PM »
I have been going through the forum looking for which upgrades improve the gas mileage. So far, between talking to the dealer and reading the forums, I have figured out that a new pipe/exhaust will free up horse power, but may lower the gas mileage and just makes it very loud (I get home at midnight in a residential neighborhood... that could be very rude).  There was a post about a kevlar belt improving gas mileage but everything I have read about kevlar only says it will last longer.  I am seeing mixed results from people who did a variator upgrade (which I still have to figure out what that is).  Others are saying a windshield has helped improve gas milage, but only slightly.

I am not looking to turn my scooter into a racer.  I bought it for commuting in town and to take some mileage and wear and tear off my car.  I am most interested in improving what I have which is about 70-75 mpg.  If I can gain horsepower without sacrificing the mpg, I'm interested.  If I can gain mpg without sacrificing horsepower, I am very interested.  What recommendations are out there?

Any actual experience on a variator, exhaust system, carburetor, windshields, and anything I might have left out, and how they affected mpg (whether it improved or worsened) would be helpful.
