Xciting 500 / Please help with overheating CVT
« on: July 02, 2012, 04:55:21 AM »
I'm out of ideas right now on this, guys and gals.  I noticed my CVT overheating a week ago so started investigating.  I'd say it gets to around 175 degrees F.  Hot enough to burn you if you keep your finger on it more than a fraction of a second.  Normally, it would be barely warm or perhaps even at ambient temp.

For an experiment, I rode it for 50 feet -- took off cover and the clutch bell was the source of great heat.  Took off the bell and saw clutch pads are worn significantly but not down to the metal.  So I decided to take off the stiff clutch springs I had installed and go back to stock springs thinking the clutch was slipping due to wear of pads.  This had no effect.  I didn't notice any slipping at any time anyway.

Everything else looks ok such as variator and belt.

I don't want to ride it with it doing this.  What does anyone think?

Xciting 500 / Windshield bolt spins, doesn't loosen
« on: May 12, 2012, 04:18:17 AM »
I went to take off the Givi windshield to put the stock one back on for the warm weather months.  One of the bolts holding the windshield just turns round and round without loosening so I figure the nut underneath is spinning.  Of course there's no way to access that nut as it is meant to be permanently in place.

Only thing I can think of is to cut or drill a hole in the side of the carrier (and there's hardly enough room to do so) to try and hold the nut.  Don't know if that will ruin the carrier or what.

Any advice please?

my rear rotor runs hot no matter what I do.  Bleed brakes per manual sequence a half dozen times. replaced rotor with updated rotor. went to new ceramic pads. Adjusted parking brake per manual.  Inspect caliper -- seems to move fine.  Rotor still drags a tiny bit -- enough to make it run hot.  I can only imagine the delay valve is bad or bad design but there are no instructions for testing it.  I hate to replace it without knowing what's going on.

I hear the newer Xcitings don't have this linked rear/front brake so I'm beginning to think about re-doing my lines to the newer set-up and doing away with the delay valve.  Can I assume that the newer rigging includes a splitter for the front lines which would go where the delay valve is now?

Xciting 500 / Magic Blinkers installed on rear
« on: February 06, 2012, 04:36:25 AM »
I'd like to thank JustWantToRide for mentioning these in earlier posts.  How are these working for the rest of you guys who installed them?  I put them in the other day and am very happy with the operation.  I did replace the rear blinker lamp OEMs with red LEDs before this.

I got an item called "Add-a-circuit" at a local auto parts store.  It goes in place of any 10w fuse and has an additional fuse and wire coming off of it.  I used that to power the Magic Blinkers.  Pushed it into the 10w ignition circuit fuse socket.  I used a 3w fuse in the Magic circuit but can go up if it blows.  The Add-a-circuit came with several fuses of various wattage.

Ran the grounds of the Magics straight to the battery ground.  Thus, I only had to cut 2 wires in my harness.

Oh by the way, I don't think my 4 way flashers work now.
They don't give you much wire with the magics so one of them wound up sitting right on top of the battery.  Anyone think this will be a problem?

Anyway, it is very nice to have all red lit up across the back of the scooter.  I think the Xciting's rear light assembly is just made for this look!

General Discussion / Crashed my car to miss hitting possum.
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:13:58 AM »
Last night I did just what the title says.  Going down a 4 lane divided hwy at the speed limit of 45 with cruise control on.  The road was wet from earlier rain.  This big possum darted out at the precise distance in which I hadn't any time to hit the brakes so I swerved.  I know, I know, I've always heard not to turn but hit the animal but my instincts took over.

I was in control even though the rear end broke traction.  I countersteered just right but then the cruise control took over and kept speeding the car up again.  Slide after slide -- one way then the other getting worse.  I didn't realize it was the cruise control causing it.  I kept thinking gee, I oughta be slowing down soon!  Finally spun around hit the curb and went right over it into wet grass and a road sign.

Car towed to a towing co yard for now.  Thank goodness I have my scooter for a back up vehicle.

My lesson learned is this:  I'll never use cruise control in wet conditions again!  I would have been fine if it hadn't been on.  If I'd been on a two lane road with traffic coming at me it could have really been terrible.  As it was, there was nobody else on my side of the road.

Xciting 500 / Got new Euro headlight module. :-)
« on: January 01, 2012, 06:44:58 PM »
I went ahead and ordered one from the guy in Poland.  $114 USD and free shipping, so cheaper than a new US version actually.

It was not in original Kymco packaging but IS brand new.  Sadly, it had one broken tab but thankfully only broken at the screw hole so the screw held that tab fine.

I decided not to return or gripe about the broken tab since it mounted fine and it works well.

The position lights look really nice and nice and visible.  I've already ordered little blue LED bulbs for them.   ;D  They also cast light nicely off to the sides of the main beam.

The headlight beam is different from our USA versions.  Low beam has a sort of blank area in the upper left quadrant, I guess to keep from shining in oncoming drivers' eyes.  High beam is awesome.

Pictures to come when I get a chance.

For Xciting 500 0r 250 owners, I found this while browsing ebay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/KYMKO-XCITING-250-500-CLEAR-WINDSHIELD-MADE-GIVI-OEM-PART-D291ST-/280792672942?hash=item41608c2aae&item=280792672942&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

Also there's still a lot of '07 Xciting 500 used parts being parted out and sold on ebay.

I had to get different mirrors once the Givi was on so shopped around online and got these.  They're available in black or chrome too.  I got the gold anodized, what the heck.  I always thought the OEM mirrors looked something like Mickey Mouse ears anyway.  These are quite a bit smaller but good enough for my use.  I used the locknuts off the OEM mirrors for a lower install.  They come with adapters.  Lovin the Givi!  Scooter is dirty in these pics, sorry, I live on a dirt road.

Xciting 500 / I have ordered a Givi windshield. Any advice?
« on: November 30, 2011, 06:40:23 PM »
I should have it in 10 days or so.  I wanted to try to extend my riding more into the cold season.  I have read that some "fitting" may be necessary?  What do you guys who have them say?  It's going on my '07 Xciting 500.

I may try to put it in the lower of the two positions.

As far as the mirrors bumping it -- can I just loosen my mirrors and swing them backward a little?

Xciting 500 / 500 Being Parted out on Ebay
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:12:02 AM »
An Xciting 500 being parted out on Ebay for the next 27 days.  They say it's an '07 but I'm not sure it really is.  Lots of parts: electrical, wheels, some engine, some tranny, etc.   I typed in "kymco xciting" to get the results.

Xciting 500 / Seal coming out of variator face
« on: September 09, 2011, 04:41:17 PM »
My stock variator has been making more noise than usual so I opened it up and looked.  I found the oil seal in the face plate (or what may be called the backing plate) has fallen out.  I was kind of suprised to see that the seal is the only thing which keeps the plate centered on and spinning true on the shaft.  Really suprised that the scooter continued to operate at all.

I pushed the seal back in place by hand and reassembled.  Within just a few miles of riding the noise is back so I assume it has fallen apart again.

I wonder what to do about it.  Do you all think I could clean and re-install the seal with locktite or some adhesive?  Or should I order a new plate/seal assembly?  Or . . . order a Malossi?  :D

Xciting 500 / Looking for old style mirrors.
« on: March 19, 2011, 03:29:00 AM »
I'd like to find someone with a pair of old style Xciting mirrors for sale. These would be the ones which mounted on the fairing.  Please no broken plastic or mirrors.  Orange would be nice but any color is fine.   :D

Best if they're in the USA so shipping won't kill me.

Seen some on an auction site but they were in the United Kingdom.

I want to try a modification I saw on Youtube.
