How to find date your tires were made
« on: October 02, 2016, 03:41:13 PM »
How old are your tires?
If they were manufactured after the year 2000

If they were made before the year 2000

I will be interested to see how long ago your tires were manufactured >
And while you're laying down there with the flashlight looking at your tire sidewalls - how do the sidewalls look and what is your over-all impression of the tire's health?

I checked 6 tires (two scoots & one Honda bike) Every tire looked very very good. Healthy, with no side-wall fissures.
The manufacture dates were surprising!

Found the DOT code on my stock Kenda tyres.  Although my LIKE is only been registered for 3 mths it was manufactured in 2015.

For car tires, the maximum "safe" life is six years from the date of manufacture. So if they are older than that, replace them whether they look bad or not. I suspect scooter tires are the same. But I'm not certain.

The rule of thumb is to not purchase a tire that was manufactured more than 2 years ago. But in reality, I'd buy them as old as three years old if I could get them at a substantial discount and I knew that I'd wear them out by mileage before 6 years.

Michelins purchased from amazon were just as new as tires on scoots and motorcycle.
Good news on all three two-wheelers in the house!
So no worries about buying unseen...in my limited experience.

Well, I just learned that my wife's 2006 Vespa LX150 has it's original front tire manufactured in 2005. I also noticed the tire has small cracks around the edge of the rim. I guess it's time to order a new front tire. Thanks for the tip!

You know....while we're kicking tires around here - I offer this thought:

When was the last time you, or someone you know, experienced a tire structure failure on a scoot - or on a car?? I do not consider a flat tire to be a tire which has 'failed'.

I cannot recall knowing of a tire structure which failed - since I last saw a car have a blow-out about 50 yrs ago.
My Dad said that it was probably caused by running it with too little air in it.

Just sayin'....with modern tire construction & under-worked law offices - we may be getting out shorts knotted for too little reason when we spot small fissures in the rubber. If every tire older than 5 or 6 years was blowing up or causing crashes with any regularity it would be big news. Or even little news.
Our streets & highways are not littered with pieces of auto tires....old or new.

Even guys riding with their pants dragging and tire threads showing are still walking & posting.

Semi-truck tires are a whole 'nother bucket of Monkeys!

Semi trucks tend to use a lot of retreads/recapped tyres.

I know this is an old thread but due to the content deserves a bump.

Old tires may look good but if their design is poor then an upgrade is warranted. Dual compound tires are an upgrade. Some new designs offer hard center/soft sidewalls to improve handling which is an upgrade.
