Downtown 300 / Re: Flat spot/hesitancy/surging at 4500/5500 rpm
« on: February 01, 2017, 11:11:09 AM »
Hallo, I have the same issue with the injection and as stated moving the MAP sensor changes it a bit but never really fixes it. Anything else we can try?
About the TPS sensor, in the manual it says it should be 3,5k to 6,5k, but is that an average resistance of the potentiometer (and why should it vary?) or is it the resistance between throttle open/close? I measured the TPS and to me it gives 4,5k overall and it spans from 1,5k to 4,5k.

Hey Simone, I still have not found a solution to the flat spot/hesitation issue. I just learned to live with it lol. I think I read somewhere that someone installed an iridium spark plug which lessened the hesitation between 4500-5000 rpm...not sure if it will work or not for me but it's worth a try when the time comes to change my spark plug. As far as the resistance for the TPS goes I'm not entirely sure, I don't have the manual in front of me, but if it lists 3.5k ohms - 6.5k ohms of resistance I would assume the resistances would signify the range from closed throttle to wide open throttle. If you're getting 1.5k ohms - 4.5k ohms you still have a range of 3000 ohms from closed throttle to open throttle which is the same range you have given me from the manual so I assume it is fine?

How many of you guys run heated gear in the colder months and still have frozen hands after a ride? I tried using cold weather gloves when it drops below 40 degrees but I didn't like them because of how big and clumsy they were. My solution: Barkbusters Blizzard handguards. They fit the bike perfectly, a little pricey but totally worth it! I installed them today and I'm looking forward to riding in comfort! These should really keep the cold wind/rain off of my hands. My current set up: Bike master heated grips, Barkbusters blizzard hand guards, Tucano Urbano termoscud, and heated seat pad for both driver and passenger, although with the leg cover the heated seat isn't necessary anymore.

Hi,  have your throttle tube arrived?

How was the fit?

Hey Kneeslider, sorry for the late reply...I haven't been on here in a while but yeah the throttle sleeve came in a while ago. It fits inside the control housing fine and seems to work okay. The stock throttle sleeve has grooves or channels for the cables to ride in, the chinese replacement does not, this kind of worried me at first but after riding with them and snapping the throttle back and releasing it many many times my worries about it went away. Also the chinese throttle sleeve has different dimensions for the stops, I don't remember how far back the throttle will twist with the stock grip sleeve, but the chinese one SEEMS shorter to me. WOT will get me to around 80-90 mph, if I'm climbing a small grade at 85+mph, my speed will drop the around 80. Does that sound right to you? I only weigh 150 lbs so I would assume it wouldn't have any trouble sustaining top speed...I didn't really test top speed before hand though. Also, I installed heated grips on the chinese throttle sleeve and the fitment was pretty darn tight, not sure if that bad boy is ever going to come off...I didnt even need to use the supplied glue to install the heated grip because the plastics pretty much fused together from tapping the grip onto the sleeve. LOL

Here are some pics I took of the throttle sleeve when I was fitting them, the white one is the OEM one, the  black one is the chinese replacement.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll try upping the tire pressure and checking the forks first since those are easy to do.

What are your tyre pressures? A few psi difference on the front tyre can cause unstable steering. Pump it to 28-30psi and see how it goes.

Thanks Mousejunks, the tire pressure is at 28-29 psi front and  back. Any other ideas? I have a givi trunk on my down town but it's usually empty when I'm riding since it holds all of my gear so I doubt that's contributing to the problem. I weigh 145 lbs and I mostly ride solo.

Hey de dee, I went ahead and cleaned and regreased the upper and lower steering head bearings with synthetic bearing grease because something didn't feel right with the steering ever since I got this scooter. It has 2000 miles on it now, I bought it with 1500 miles. I thought the bearings were starting to notch but when I inspected them they looked brand new. The problem with my dt300 is that it follows imperfections on the road too easily and also easily disrupts the steering when going over bumps and it's down right scary when going over bumps slightly leaned over. At 70-80 mph the steering seems to move left and right ever so slightly causing the entire bike to ever so slightly wobble...I thought the bearings had a notch because of that, like it was riding in and out of the notch but I didn't find any notches. What do you think the problem could be?

Yeah, I actually took my apart to measure out the cam diameter, cam thickness, winding diameter, tube length, tube inner diameter.

Were you able to find a throttle sleeve that matches the stock dimensions? The one I ordered is being shipped from China and will probably take a few weeks to arrive

Yeah, I've been trying to find a replacement throttle tube which is has a quick throttle function.
Hey kneeslider, I took apart the kill switch assembly by removing the 2 Phillips screws from the bottom to reveal the throttle sleeve and the 2 throttle cable ends that attaches to the sleeve. It looks pretty easy to change out if you can find a throttle sleeve that fits. I bought this one for around $7-8 shipped. Hopefully it will work here's the link.

I tried removing the throttle grip today on the DT300, it's impossible to do without completely destroying it. I think the OP is correct in that the rubber grip and the throttle sleeve is molded together. Brake cleaner and wedging an allen key/flat head screwdriver only broke the rubber apart. I'm done messing with it for now and will just install the heated grips on a different bike

Downtown 300 / Re: How to: Install K&N Air Filter for DT300I
« on: October 15, 2016, 11:57:25 PM »
How is the quality? The K and N filter, actually winds up being cheaper. $51.99 w/ free shipping as opposed to $37.18 + $20.77 shipping from kymcopartsmonster.  BTW, I like those harbor freight screw drivers [emoji16]. I have about 5 new sets myself

I can't really comment on the quality of the air filter, it seems about on par with the oem one as far as look and feel of the plastic compared to the oem one(cheap lol). The filter surface area looks smaller than that of the oem one. However, K&N is a reputable company and I'm sure they know what they're doing. This filter will pay itself off after about 4-6k miles. It is washable and reusable so this will be the last filter you will ever need to buy for your dt300i.
Oh and about the harbor freight screwdrivers. I get them for free every now and then, and they work surprisingly well, the magnetic tip could be stronger but it works and sure beats one without it. 5 sets eh? Looks like I got some catching up to do ;)

Did the filter come pre oiled?

Yes it did. The pinkish purple color on the filter is the oil.

Downtown 300 / How to: Install K&N Air Filter for DT300I
« on: October 15, 2016, 02:58:25 AM »
Hello Fellow DT300i owners, I thought I'd share with you today my newly acquired K&N replacement air filter for the DT300i. I bought this directly from K&N's official website. Part number is KY-2911. It says it fits the 2015 model, but it will also fit older model years like my 2012. Anyways, onto the quick and simple install!

Part number for the air filter!

Tools you will need: Phillips head screw driver (yes that's all you will need!)

Step 1: Place the scooter up on the center stand
Step 2: Remove the 8 black phillips head screws from the air box cover. (They are circled in red below) Then pull the cover off, it should come right off.

Step 3: Remove the 7 brass screws holding the air filter in place. Then pull the air filter out.

Comparison between OEM air filter and K&N air filter

Step 4: Place the new K&N air filter where the old filter came out. It can only go in one way! Then secure the air filter down with the 7 brass screws. Tip: Don't tighten the screws in all the way until you have all 7 screws in!

Step 5: Secure the air box cover with the 8 black phillips head screws. Again, don't tighten them down all the way until you get all the screws in! Optional: Attach K&N stickers onto the air box, and you're done! Pat yourself on the back and have a cold one!

steering bearings ,.  very easy to do just takes time, buy your bearing first,  I listed them a few weeks ago ,. with the size,.  or if you want just rotate the outer races and grease them well, and re install,.  they wear in one spot,.

I will be ordering new upper and lower steering head bearings soon. I found brand new genuine Kymco head bearings for the DT300i on ebay for $55 USD each. Are these OK to use if I use a synthetic grease on them? ( I'm assuming the problem with the OEM bearing is the grease that they use and not the bearings themselves, or am I wrong?)

I don't really understend what you mean with this steering/wandering. Are you speaking about the front wheel?

IMPORTANT:  It seems that, whatever you do with the map sensor, after couple of days or more the CPU tries to solve this on it's own. So it tries to get the same specs and hesitancy like it was before. But now with the map sensor on the other position, the hesitancy starts on some other rpm than before. For me it starts right when I start to accelerate. With Dr. Pulley sliders it ends very soon so I can live wtih this. It will probably be much different situation for every specific downtown, depending of the map sensor position and earlier exact  rpm hesitancy spot

Sorry, I was referring to the steering/wandering issue that the OP had from his first post.

I was able to rotate the MAP sensor today, it looks like my bike prefers the sensor to be in the 10 o clock position when looking at the sensor from the left side of the bike. I performed the TPS reset every time after making an adjustment to the MAP sensor. It seems slightly better at low rpms now but seems to hesitate at highway speeds? If the CPU compensates for the map sensor adjustment every few days, I might just keep it at the factory settings and try to get used to it lol. Honestly, my biggest gripe is the steering issue, any imperfection in the road will upset the steering of the bike, and it really sucks when I'm filtering and the bike pulls towards the car next to me because of a crack or small bump in the road. I seem to be constantly fighting the steering and it gets tiring after a while.

I have the same issues with my DT 300i, loose steering/wandering, and the on and off surging at around 4500 rpm. These issues make me a lot less enthusiastic to ride. I will try rotating the MAP sensor, that looks easy enough...how did you fix the steering issue though? I have no idea how to service a head bearing aside from watching a youtube video on how to do it on a motorcycle
