I'm not certain, but it seems like the front tire might have been mounted backwards as well.  O_o

I'm not sure what to check with the steering head and fork braces. I did what the manual said with turning the steering and compressing the shocks, but I didn't notice anything odd. I don't notice any play in the wheels either. The rear wheel was 1 psi overinflated, the front 1 psi underinflated.

I have noticed that with the rear wheel, it'll be easy to turn, then a bit stiffer, then easy again. It's apparent when the bike is idling on the center stand too, the wheel will vary in speed. Could this be involved?

For some reason the previous owner also replaced the front wheel only and with a different brand. The difference in wear is very apparent. Could that cause this?

When I take my People 250 at high speeds, it feels kind of shaky, like I'm being oscillated side to side, and perhaps like my handlebars are oscillating a bit. This is at around 60-75mph on what I believe to be chip seal.

Is this normal? Is there anything I might want to check?

Technical | How To / Easiest scooter to work on?
« on: March 02, 2014, 07:32:47 PM »
Hopefully this post isn't miscategorized.

In general my People 250 is much, much easier to work on in many ways compared to the smaller Yamaha Vino 125 I had before, where some things such as checking the valves was nearly impossible. But some things still seem like there's quite a bit of room for improvement, like having easy access to the spark plug or the brake reservoirs.

I was wondering if anybody knew of any scooters that are particularly well designed in terms of being easy to work on? Or otherwise what the easiest ones are.

What lesson did you learn? Having never done it before, I'd like to avoid the same mistake when it comes time to change my belt.

Sounds like good advice, plus I could feel like a forensic detective.

I haven't bothered topping the level since it's hasn't gotten significantly close to empty. After about 5 month, it's nearing halfway down.

577
Did you get both the sudden loss of power when driving as well as the hard starting when it's cold?

578
On second examination, I'm less sure about the color. It mostly looks like normal used oil color to me.

579
I'm not sure if the oil level is higher, but it does look a bit like milky coffee to me. Does that probably mean I need to replace the head gasket?

No.

The coolant reservoir is slowly getting lower. The engine area smells a tiny bit like coolant to me. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I should check out? There aren't any leaks I can see, and it's running cool.

I replaced the coolant a while back because the reservoir was low when I bought it, but I think it should have long since settled down by now.

I have a 2007 People 250 with about 6000 km on it.

Normally it runs fine, but once in a while, it has a problem. It'll want to stall at stoplights, or when I'm first starting it. This is helped by giving it a bit of throttle. Eventually it resolves itself by completely losing power when I'm moving, but then regaining it after a short time.

I don't know if this is related, but when it's cold out (say less than 40 degrees F) it'll take several starts to keep it running. And if I try to give it any throttle too early, it'll stall.

When i bought it, apparently it didn't start and the owner took it in to get the carburetor cleaned. So I'm thinking this could be related.

I've tried running seafoam and b12 chemtool, adjusting the idle screw, adjusting the air-fuel mix, and adjusting the valve clearances.

I'm a bit overdue for replacing the gear oil and air filter.

Also, the manual says

Pilot screw opening 21⁄2 ± 1⁄2 for People 250; 11⁄4± 3⁄4 for People S 250. I assume that's number of turns away from fully closed?

Can you just go by that?

Can I skip setting the idle speed to max and leave it within spec, and still find the setting that gives the highest RPM?

It's unclear to me what you're asking, but here's some instructions that can show you what's involved in adjusting the valve clearance:
