Fitting a Tachometer to a Super 8 4Stroke
« on: November 29, 2010, 05:37:40 PM »
Seen this done on a video on youtube somewhere, just wondering if anyones done it and knows how to do it.

Im guessing you have to fit some sort of crank shaft sensor?

I think it attaches to an existing bolt on the motor somewhere.
Im usually on a bicycle, so for me, this thing is hauling ass!

Most modern tachometers are electronic and use the pulse that drives the ignition to provide the engine rotation information.
Be sure to find one that uses 1 pulse per revolution.  Here is an article.

The second problem is where to mount it.

Cheers, had a look on ebay and there quite simple. They just wrap a wire around the spark plug and detect everytime it fires to give a reading, can be set to 4 stroke or 2 obviously!

Cost me £13, for all the yanks thats about $25ish.

From china ;)

A reading? How accurate is the reading?

I seen a universal on that you wrap the wire from the tach around the spark plug wire. My freind uses on and it seems to work well for him. he has on thats digital. I would think they shoud work well after all some car tachs work off the coil

The universal "inductive" tachs work fine. They sell for under $10.00 from China or 30.00 on ebay. If you want a "hard wired" Tach. ANY motorcycle tach will work. It gets wired to the pulsar coil on the engine. You can wire it from the + side of the Ign. coil but the pulsar is closer to the rest of the wiring needed. (+12v/Gnd.)
