Title: Lunch and Ride
Post by: MJR on June 04, 2017, 05:50:11 AM
Today I met up with stuo, we had lunch while chatting over scoots and other stuff. After we parted ways I took a ride up PCH, stopped in Pacific Motorsports, they had two Like 200i's a nice dark blue and a red one. Next stop was California Boss Hoss motorcycles. This place has quite a collection of vintage bikes from early BMW, Harley, Henderson, and lots of other ones. They had a Salisbury scooter, some of those Boss Hoss Chevy V-8 powered bikes, and they sell the new Cushman II scooters. Hit a hobby shop, reptile store, Del Amo Motorsports, 4 Wheel Parts, Space X, and the oldest surviving McDonald's. On the Space X rocket this is the very first one that they landed in one piece oh also earlier today they launched and landed another one sending supplies to the International Space Station in Florida, amazing.

Thanks again MJ for the great photos

My favs were of the McDonald's!
Pretty sure that's where a buddy took me in 1967. He lived in Downey (used to ride my Honda bike near Disneyland to get to his house....does that sound right?) I believe that I ordered a burger, fries and a pop & got change for my dollar? I think min. wage was $1.60 at TabLok (quick change motocross sprockets)  machine shop I worked at in Pasadena for a few weeks.

Helped him lift his VW off to rebuild the engine. Didn't know squat about engines - but was young & strong.
I learned, in the fast lane of a SoCal freeway, that VW supplied their cars with a reserve tank & lever, rather than a fuel gauge. Very exciting.
Keep riding the PCH at posting the results!
Thanks again.
Stig

Tom, you are over the top with your ride reports and pictures. I especially loved the shot of the Salisbury and Cushman II. If there were no other reason to belong to this forum, and there is, your post would be enough. Thanks

Mac

Things were a lot different back then. It's very likely this would be the same McDonald's as I believe this was the only original type in the area. Disneyland is just up Harbor Blvd from Costa Mesa in Anaheim. I'm not sure we have anything like a fast lane these days with the traffic, lol.

Oh here's the Web cast video of yesterday's launch and first stage landing. They are making these first stage landings look routine.

No, it's not a launch being played backwards

The closeups from ground based cameras it's funny almost look fake because no one has ever landed orbital class rockets before. They remind me of Japanese model animation rocket launch scenes. It's so cool that we finally are seeing science fiction of the 50'same in reality today, took long enough.

Start at 14:20 or so and see from separation down to landing from a ground based camera and as the flames bathe the rocket.

These are nice pictures. There is even a vintage scooter with a Nevada plate on it. Very nice. San Diego is the one place I would spend my summers. Vegas is just too hot during the summer months. I saw the forecast for San Diego this week. It will mid sixties to low seventies. Very nice.

Night times are usually best during the warmer months in Vegas of course it's more humid there these days than when I lived there in the 70's not to mention the larger population. Here's the history on the Salsbury scooter http://www.salsburyscooters.com/salsbury-history.html (http://www.salsburyscooters.com/salsbury-history.html)

True. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. I have been a Vegas resident for almost 24 years. I would rather live by the lake, river, or ocean in the summer than the Mojave desert. Even Reno and Lake Tahoe are nice at this time of year.

You know it is summer here when it is too damn hot to even be out in the afternoon. When the temp hits 95 degrees before 10am, you know it is gonna be a long, hot, dry day.

Even my little dog does not want go out in the afternoon to do her business. She looks at me like I don't think so daddy. I will do my business on my training pads. Our dogs are very smart creatures. They know when to go and not to go in the summer time.

I loved the walking out of an air conditioned casino in summer and it was like the heat had just sucked all your energy out.

Here in Vegas, we know the heat is coming. You expect it, but you are never really prepared for it.  You go out and boom, it just hits
you.  We even have the blow dryer effect here.

Yah, it's like a blow torch out on the desert !

Here, we have little wind in the summer.
Walking down the street is like a stroll in an oven set at London Broil !
117F in the shade, and that's hard to find.

You are welcome to ride along anytime. I just wondered what to do with the rest of the day and went for a ride.
