A windshield that fits my Super 8.....kinda....
« on: August 09, 2014, 05:04:21 PM »
Finally found a wind shield that fits on the Super 8. It's a Puig that is actually designed to fit an Aprillia Sportcity.
I had to fiddle with the mounts for a bit, and buy longer allen bolts for the mirror extenders to allow the spacers to fit.
It even fit over the factory faux windscreen, but I had to adjust the mounting arms to the limit of their reach.
It's not perfect, but it works for what I wanted. It keeps the wind from hitting into my chest when going down the road, so now I don't feel like a drag chute!

You'll have to give a full review once you get some time in with it. Maybe even an install video. :)

So far, the only thing I've noticed, is I have to relearn to judge my speed in town. Since the wind isn't hitting my chest now, I've caught myself doing 45 in a 35 twice already. I guess I'll have to pay more attention to the speedo until I get used to the change.  ;D

When I first put it on, the front edge was tapping against the front edge of the stock screen when I hit a bumpy patch. So, I put a small strip of adhesive foam insulation on the nose of the factory screen to cushion it. That solved the tapping and makes the Puig screen sit more rigid.

I'll let everyone know how much it helps or not next time it rains.

That screen really looks great. I know what you mean about noticing your speed. When I first installed my wind screen the lack of air against my chest made the ride so much better. I no longer had to lean forward into the air flow. The buffeting around my helmet was reduced as well. ;)

Could you post a couple of closeup pics on the mounting brackets and how that works. Thanks.

A couple shots of the mounting brackets. As I said before, they're at the edge of their reach to fit over the stock screen. I may consider getting some bar stock and bending up a couple of longer arms so I have some more room to adjust the angle of the windshield.

And a shot of the piece of foam weatherstripping I put on the nose of the stock screen to prevent the Puig from rattling against it on bumps, and add a little extra support. A simple solution, but it works!

Looks like a nice solution. Thanks for the pics, it gives me a better idea on how it went together. Let us know in a month or two how it's treating you.

Now that you've had it for awhile, are you still liking the windshield?  Where is the air hitting you?  Did you get to try it out in the rain?

It helps a little in the rain. The air still hits my head and arms, but is reduced a lot on my chest and shoulders.
Makes the ride a lot more comfortable all around.

It's been a while since adding the Puig windshield, so I figured I would give an update now that I've lived with it for a couple of months.

Overall, I'm still pleased with it for reducing the wind hitting me in the chest and shoulders. Especially since the temps have taken a nosedive recently.

The air still hits my head, but not as strong as before.

One issue I've noticed, is that the air hits my helmet at a different angle. Instead of straight on, it hits my helmet at a slight upward angle. It doesn't buffet my head around any more than without the shield, but I've noticed the the wind noise on the helmet is louder. I guess because it hits the faceshield at a more upward angle, it's whistling at the edges of the shield hinge.

The only other issue is that it isn't wide enough to deflect to air off of my hands. Didn't really notice this until the temperatures got chilly. So I just double layer my gloves, and put a set of Hot Hands warmers in between them if it's really cold. I might look into adding a set of bar end mounted hand guards for winter.

Other than those two quirks, I'm still liking the shield. I might still take it off when summer rolls back around, but for now, it'll stay put.

It looks OEM from my couch. Glad to hear it does what you needed it to do.
