General Discussion / Big changes happening here...
« on: April 20, 2018, 04:09:00 PM »
Sorry I have been MIA lately. Over the past 2 years since retirement, my wife and I have seen a lot of changes to our lifestyle, such as dealing with both of our aging parents in many ways, and the recent death of my father, which means more changes.

We are also, because of the price of fuel, consolidating many of our trips to only once a week, which means we are carrying a lot of stuff with us (too much for the scooters) as we run errands, drop off stuff for the parents, take them to Dr appointments, and so forth . Also, my wife has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and is no longer able to take the pain associated with riding scooters (bumps, wrist, head, heat, cold, etc.) and I don't really want to spend my retirement riding alone without her. Riding together is how we started and it's just what we do, so riding really looses a lot of its meaning to me when riding alone.

So bottom line is that we made the very difficult and sad decision to sell our scooters. With all the lifestyle changes lately we just had to do it. I will still be here checking on all of your exploits, but for now I will have to ride vicariously through your scooter adventures. Keep those tires rolling for us!

Roadcraft / Which one wins? Time or Temp?
« on: December 07, 2017, 04:37:31 AM »
I was riding in the clear, bright sunshine under big blue skies yesterday - great day for a late-in-the-year scooter ride. However, the temperature was only 35*F, which is cold enough, but add the 40 mph speed (hence, wind chill) and DANG it got cold. Even though I was layered up, I still wrestled with this question all the way home:

Do I go slower and spend more time in the cold weather getting home, but with a lower wind chill factor,
OR
Do I go faster, get home sooner, but suffer through higher wind chill factors???

What do you all do when you are in this situation? Ride faster or slower?

General Discussion / Instead of riding, I've been doing this...
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:30:18 AM »
...live-trapping a bunch of foxes! We have a family of the critters living about a block away, and they are killing all of the chickens in the neighborhood. So far, we have trapped 4 out of 12 and released them together out in the woods, way out in the hills away from other chickens. That also means that we have had to dig down and put wire under all the coop fences to keep the foxes from digging under and getting to our hens. We are lucky and haven't lost any chickens yet, but many neighbors have had their flocks completely cleared out. Hopefully in a few days we will have most of them trapped and released, and I can get back to riding.

General Discussion / Thank you, Veterans!
« on: May 30, 2017, 05:47:12 AM »
On this Memorial Day, I just want to send out a quick word of gratitude to all the veterans among us on this forum. We all appreciate your service to our country so much more than we could ever say. I only hope that some day we realize the true value of our soldiers and figure out a way to make it so they never have to want for financial or material items after their term of service ends.

We salute you!

General Discussion / Seafoam - how often do you use it?
« on: April 08, 2017, 03:02:54 AM »
I have a 150cc GY6 engine (carburated) in my Lance/SYM PCH, and I usually use 91 octane non-ethanol gas in my 1.3 gallon tank. Through the winter I add Sta-bil to the gas and let it run a few minutes to get it into the entire system. This has worked very well, and my scooter always starts right up each spring.

I plan on adding the Seafoam directly into the tank when I fill up to help clean the carb and maintain the fuel lines. Just wondering how often I should add it to the gas...every fill up? Once a month? Every other month? Every so many miles? I don't want to over-do it, just do it right. Your experience and wisdom is much appreciated. Thanks!

Here's a link to a wonderful designer, Randy Grubb, from Grant's Pass, OR, who has designed a very slick aluminum "pod" body to go over a Piaggio Fly 150 (he calls it a BiPod) and a Piaggio MP3 (the TriPod). The end result is so cool!  8) Take a look at the videos towards the bottom of this web page. Each one he builds is a one-of-a-kind design, a true work of art. I would love to have one of these babies (not sure about the cost, but one was sold at an auction for about $25,000!). Worth the time to take a look.

General Discussion / Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017
« on: January 01, 2017, 05:27:22 AM »
This was not a great year all the way around - so many deaths and tragedies this year - so I'm very glad to give 2016 a swift kick in the butt and send it out the door. Here's wishing everyone on the forum a much better, wonderful, and healthy 2017! Ride safe, everyone!

General Discussion / Snow & Ice & Wind, oh my!
« on: December 17, 2016, 12:20:25 AM »
Well, that's the end of my riding season.  >:(  Just had 2 big storms in the last 3 days dumping about 6 inches accumulation of snow, and for the next 2 weeks, the highest high temp will be 22F, and the lows will be down in the zero F range. Luckily, both our scooters are now winterized and tucked into their spots in the garage at a comfortable 55F. Sure different than last year's winter, when I was riding clear through the end of January before we were hit with the white crud.

I know some of you are faring much worse than this, so I give you my heartfelt condolences on the end of your riding season. And for those of you lucky enough to be able to ride all year, please go out and enjoy a good ride for those of us stuck inside. (Hurry up, Spring!)

What are the weather conditions now where you live? Let us know what's going on in your area, please.

Roadcraft / Again, wear your GEAR! (Proof from a bicycle accident)
« on: September 28, 2016, 02:26:16 AM »
Here's another solid reason to wear your full gear when you go riding. My son-in-law was just going to take a quick bike ride with his dog on Saturday, so he just hopped on without a helmet, etc. After all, it was just a quick ride around the block to exercise the dog. Well, the dog spooked and turned right when the SIL was turning left, and he hit the pavement - hard! Here is a list of the damages to my son-in-law as a result of hitting the pavement at ONLY 15 MPH: broken collar bone in 2 places, broken sternum, major concussion, and big road rash on his scalp, shoulder, knuckles, knee, and ankles. He has had to make two trips to the ER and 2 appointments at specialists. He will be out of work at least 2 weeks followed by about a month of physical therapy. (The dog is fine, by the way.)

So, if all this damage can occur to the human body at 15 mph (which our scooters hit with a tiny twist of the wrist), let it be a good motivator for us all to always gear up before riding, even if it's just a short little trip. I want all of you to be safe and have a great time on your scooter, but PLEASE take all the necessary precautions. ATGATT, my friends!!

I can now join the ranks of those who have been tagged as "Hero Members". It takes 500 posts, I now know, and it makes me realize we need a new category for those way up into the thousands of posts: "Legend Member" or "Stig Level"  :D

General Discussion / Retired at last!!
« on: June 13, 2016, 12:57:26 AM »
Well folks, after 32 years of teaching middle schoolers (and high school for the last 8 years), I am hanging up my Band Director baton and becoming CEO of Household Honey-dos and Naps!! I know that for some of you, 32 years doesn't seem like a lot, but trust me, teaching middle school is like dog years: each one seems like seven.  ;D

Now I get to ride whenever I choose to, and the scooter will become my primary commuting and errand machine (at least until the heavy snow hits.) The big F-150 will also be retired, and we have both earned it - lots of mileage on us both!

Hang in there, everyone. Your time will eventually come!

General Discussion / Why are we getting Russian spam?
« on: December 14, 2014, 06:02:16 PM »
All of a sudden there is a ton of crap being posted by some Russian spammer on this forum. Moderator needs to exorcise the demon!  >:(  We didn't go through the Cold War only to have to put up with this junk. Grrrr!

Roadcraft / Dry roads at last!
« on: December 28, 2013, 03:14:12 AM »
Finally, all the snow has melted off the roads and the sun peeked out enough to dry them out! Of course I jumped on the scooter and took a long-overdue ride. What a great feeling to be out on the road again on my PCH 150! Of course, my only motivation was to try out the new winter riding gear I got for Christmas.  ;)  Hope you all can find some dry roads of your own and get some riding under your belt soon!

General Discussion / Crap! Snow!
« on: December 07, 2013, 06:20:58 PM »
Well, that's the end of the scooter riding for a while. We just got a foot of snow overnight and it's still snowing. Luckily, our scooters are tucked into a nice, warm garage with full tanks and StaBil, hooked up to battery tenders. I have to go out about twice a day and just sit on it and dream about warmer weather and long rides again....  sigh.....

I have about $150 that is earmarked for my scooter, kind of a Christmas fund. I want to know what kind of mods you have on your scoot that would be under or around that amount. I already have a top case, windshield, and battery tender pigtails on it. So if you had $150, what would you add (or have already added) to your scooter? (By the way, I have a Lance PCH 150 scooter - not a Kymco, but it's the replacement for my P 150 that was totaled recently.) thanks in advance for any ideas you can share!
