Thinking of selling
« on: May 06, 2023, 09:59:53 AM »
I just turned 79 years old. In the fall of 2021, I bought a new 2021 X-Town 300i abs. I didn't ride it too much the last year. The scooter has less than 700 miles on it. It's black & blue with a Shad top case (w/taillight) and a Puig windscreen. I also installed LED head and running lights, cockpit GPS bracket, and a 12-volt accessory plug for a Battery tender or a GPS. I took it out this spring. I was sitting in my driveway, and the scooter started to tip on me. I couldn't hold it and it tipped over causing several small scratches. I got out from under it ok but could not pick it up by myself. Now I'm nervous about riding and am thinking of selling. I'm wondering what a fair price would be and if there is a market for this model?

sorry to hear about your incident and the thought of selling,,,but we will all get there, someday. Maybe consider a return to a smaller bike, like a 150?

I would say yes, there is definitely a market for nice, used 300cc scoots! They seem to be pretty hard to find.

I found one 'local' facebook marketplace listing for an X Town. 2021 with 600 miles, $3700. Not sure if one listing is totally representative. Scooter prices do seem to vary quite a bit, regionally.

For sure try a 150 size scoot. I'm 77 and the Downtown 300 I ride I have to be extra careful with. Cross that point and I can't keep it from falling. I have developed the habit of pushing out the side stand when coming to a stop, and dismount on the right side.  Now my Honda PCX, 288 lbs and short wheel base,  is easy to roll around and even with being limited for top speed keeps me enjoying the riding.
The market for used scooters, especially low mileage ones is good.

I had exactly the same experience a number of years ago, except that it was a Honda 500 that I couldn't stop from falling and couldn't pick up. So, I sold that bike and bought a 150cc scooter; I've since moved to my Kymco. If I was you, I'd see how manageable a smaller scooter feels, rather than abandoning riding completely. Good luck!

I'm surprised that scooter hasn't turned around and bitten you :)

I'm 82 and understand the problem!  Years ago, when I could see it coming, I downsized to a 100cc Kymco that's fast enough for local highways, and light enough to pick up with one hand.  It's great for shopping, and I ride it everywhere.

Thank you for the responses. I started out my scootering on a People 150. Wish I had it now. My biggest problem is location. I'm in Syracuse, NY, and there doesn't seem to be much of a market here. There is only 1 Kymco dealer in the area, and he primarily deals in atv's. The X-Town I have now, I had shipped from Cleveland. How about some suggestion on sites to sell my scooter, and possible find a smaller one to replace it.

Facebook Marketplace is the new craigslist...it seems all classified ads have moved there. I'm not on facebook but my wife is, so I use her log in info to browse. I have the 'motorcycle for sale' page bookmarked and view it regularly.

Cycletrader is another good spot.  These would be good for both selling and buying.

Probably because craigslist now charges $5 for a motorcycle/scooter personal add. Before they added the charge, dealers flooded the listings with adds. I still use craigslist and have had no problems.

Sure, Craigslist is still worth a look but 90% of all listing have moved to Facebook Marketplace because posting is free.

Odd! Where I live Craigslist is free and nobody uses Facebook. I've got several ads on C/L at this very moment, and it's got lots of action.  Never heard of C/L charging for personal ads.
