Dunno if you watched it tonight, but there was a dude who got hit on his scooter in an out-of-town accident (not his fault -- he was rear-ended), and got charged $200 'cause the local fire department dispatched a fire truck. He was uninjured, and required no treatment.

It may not have been the scooter he was riding in the accident, but they showed him with a Yager 200i.

Wow. So if he doesn't make a suit for damages he will have to pay the $200? Seem a bit unfair. Glad he's alright, though.

Maybe I am missing something, but why would he have to pay if it was not his fault?!?

In most municipalities, if emergency services are called (fire truck, bambulance, etc) then the person receiving the service foots the bill.  Dial 911 and see how it works :).  Seriously, the other guy's insurance should end up paying for it on a reimbursement basis.

...unless of course the other person is uninsured. 

This story has been around for a while - and I seem to recall the at fault driver didn't have insurance - but I could be wrong.  I saw the story on MSNBC because they were talking about how these days states, counties, cities, etc. are cash strapped and looking for ways to gather more revenue.
